Who: Armin & Ryner, Armin & Sion
Where: Collegiate Gym
When: Februari 2nd
Summary: Armin has come for advice and a badge
Rating: G
Log:
[to Ryner]
[Armin holds his breath as he commands Mawile into one final Iron Head. The sandstorm that had dominated the battlefield had died down, but the air still tasted slightly gritty. He'd have to command Mawile to whip it back up again after this - if there is another round after this. Umbreon is looking unsteady on its legs (though Mawile is far from fresh as well) and Armin can hear his heart thump-thump in his ears as Mawile charges in, head lowered for another blow. Too unsteady, Umbreon cannot do anything to dodge it, and Mawile crashes into it with a low thud. They both skid across the sand-strewn field, Mawile remaining on his feet, Umbreon on his side.
The air is tense, charged, as they wait to see if Umbreon will manage to find the strength to lift itself up onto its paws again. But this time, it remains still, knocked out. Defeated.
It takes a moment for everything to sink it, Mawile realising it is victorious far before he does.
Tacticians Badge obtained.]

[to Sion]
[After getting all the advice he could from Ryner, Armin wasn't done yet. First of all, it'd be in pretty bad form to come all this way and not even say hello to Sion. But more importantly, Sion had defeated the Elite Four as well. He might have some valuable insight and tips as well. And Armin was not the type of person to half-ass a job, even if that job was just a personal desire for battle advice.
Sion wasn't there though, so for the moment, Armin is waiting for him in the library. He's got a mug of tea cooling on a table as he looks over the spines of the many books Sion and Ryner have collected in their time here, occasionally pulling one out to give it a glance over. If he had the time, he'd gladly camp out here for a week and do nothing but read, but he's got too much to do. Though, he might end up asking Sion and Ryner whether it is okay to borrow one or two of these books.]

I promise I haven't forgotten x_x
Huh. Maybe this is part of why they all do it. (Alternatively, maybe he really is a masochist after all.)
He recalls the Umbreon to his ball, pausing briefly to comment]
You did great, Jiji.
[before he tucks the ball away. Though, if he knows the Umbreon, all that matters to him is that he got to have fun.
And then, he turns to Armin. Honestly, if he wanted to be professional about this, he should probably have a better posture than he does, but at least he's trying not to look as eternally exhausted as he is.]
Well then, congratulations. You're pretty good at strategizing on the fly.
No worries, no worries.
Thanks, but really, I wouldn't have been able to do it if you hadn't trained your pokemon as well as you did. They were an absolute delight to work with. And I have to say it was really fun to battle using some pokemon I normally don't work with.

[Whether he's just downplaying his own contributions out of habit or not is up to interpretation, but.]
I'm glad you think that way, though. And I could tell all of the Pokemon were having a great time, too. It's not every day a trainer like you comes along and makes things interesting.
[He takes out the box he has the badge in, opens it so that it's displayed properly, and offers it to Armin.]
This is yours, then. You've earned it.

[Armin flushes a bit when he catches sight of the Mawile who won him the last battle though.]
Not that Mawile here isn't incredible as well. You just... well, you know how I get about Water Pokemon.
[We all have our favourites.
When Ryner holds out the box, Armin accepts it, admiring the badge within.]
Thank you. I'm hoping to maybe challenge the Elite Four in a few months, so being able to do this much is reassuring.

[not going to get pedantic over who the OT is because really that's not important--]
Thinking of taking the Elite Four on, though, huh? Nice. They're pretty tough, but as long as your team's up to it, I think you'll do fine.

[Who knows, he might even be able to persuade Sion or Ryner to let him borrow said Empoleon for breeding purposes. But that is something to think about in the future. He's got too many plans right now to handle eggs on top of that.]
To be absolutely honest, I'm more interested in seeing Mt Silver and Victory Road. Ever since Heather posted pictures of it last year, I've been wanting to see it with my own eyes. But I figure it would be a good opportunity to challenge them while I am there.

Needless to say, it wasn't terribly difficult to find the successful challenger upon hearing he hadn't left the gym. Sion knew well what sort of things would pique Armin's interests, after all.
"You know, had you mentioned you were coming, I could have made sure to stick around to watch the match," he teases lightly upon spotting him in the library.

"I just didn't want to turn myself into a spectacle if I had ended up losing. Especially using pokemon I was unfamiliar with." Though he quickly adds: "Not that I didn't like the opportunity. It was actually really fun and interesting not knowing what pokemon I was going to end up with and trying to figure out a strategy for ones I had never worked with before. Your gym is really great for that. It's just a bit harder to feel properly prepared for something like that."
Thus adding to the nervousness about performing in front of an audience.

Though Armin may well have already realized that by now. It certainly wouldn't surprise Sion if he had.
"But there wouldn't be anything to be ashamed of if you lost the match, either. Especially since it is so different from usual."

He's had to suffer quite a few embarrassments from failing in front of other people. His whole three years in the training corps had been one embarrassment after another. It doesn't stop him from doing what has to be done, but, still, why not avoid it if he can?
"Though, I really should compliment you on the pokemon. They were amazing to fight with. You must've put a lot of time into their training."
no subject
"I'll have to pass that along to them, they're doing most the work you know." Not that Sion and Ryner don't praise their teams already, of course. "And it wasn't too bad, really. Since Ryner and I have always worked together, many of them were already used to listening to both of us to some extent. So it was just a matter of expanding on that."
