CAMP ALPHA: for everyone who wanted a crossover between summercamp and Ghost Adventures

Been to the Ruins of Alph before? Are you an old hat at this stuff? Well turn everything you thought you knew UPSIDE DOWN because EVERYTHING. IS DIFFERENT NOW.

… Or at least, that’s what the flyers being passed out under a canopy of cheap Celebi balloons that are bobbing around in the breeze say.

One thing’s for sure, there sure are a lot more tents than normal. By the time most of you casuals get there, the entire picnicking area, usually quite spacious, has been turned into a small tent city. And the excited atmosphere is palpable.

The crackle of the Ruin Rangers’ walkie-talkies mingles with that of the ghost-hunting equipment toted around by excited Hex Maniacs, burbling Unown are drifting here and there to blink curiously at all the new people and Pokemon suddenly on their turf, and chatter from Legend Seekers of all ages (really, of ALL ages-- everyone from Youngsters to Veterans have apparently been swept up in the Seeker-mania!) rings out as stories and speculations are swapped.

There’s lots to do, plenty to explore, and (according to word on the grapevine), more than enough spooky rituals to perform once the night falls.

Will you solve some tile puzzles and fall into an underground chamber? Stick to the main group and make s’mores? Befriend a floating letter (or twenty-four)? Go directly against the advice of the tired-looking Rangers and play One Man Hide-and-Seek in the dark?

Or, most importantly, will you start a small-scale riot in order to keep the loud static boxes away from the tents where you’re trying to sleep?

When you say "Here" do you mean like, here here, in these ruins, or just here, in general?

Conmen stick together, I guess. Shack up together. Vaguely traumatize the son of one conman, then go unleash Hog Anagarak on New York together. They're dating now, which is even worse. I coulda handled finding out they had a past fling, or a one-night-stand, but noooo...

[He spins on his heel, gesturing to the perfectly good tent. There's nothing wrong with it, it's in good shape, and his Yamask has done a decent enough job of helping Frogadier put it together.]

It's on the ground! Do none of you take issue with this?

A sleeping bag? How am I to rest inside of a bag?

[Honestly, Shadowmaru kind of stayed in hotels and then his house in Olivine since he got here. The whole "sleeping on the road" part of being a trainer never got him.]

Where do I find a mattress?

"Yeah, I get you. I've heard some crazy stories about some of these legendary guys. It definitely wouldn't be too out there to think there's even more craziness that no one knows about, yet."

The girls have all had their berries, so now it's time for Marceline to have her snack. She also spears a marshmallow on a twig - because you don't have to wash twigs after you're finished with them - and gets busy roasting.

"So basically no one where you're from is satisfied unless they're fighting, huh? I mean, fighting can be fun sometimes, but I don't get fighting all the time. The world's so much nicer when everyone just chills, you know?"

[It takes several moments for Egon to recover his ability to speak.]

Er--ah. [He clears his throat.] I see the continuing differences between our two dimensions become more notable with each passing day.

...Should we go inside the ruins?

[He was definitely happy to have familiar faces around. At least until this happens. Until the universe reveals him to be a failure in some capacity that normal people function so well in.]

[You'd think he'd remember how to do this.]

Maybe... this is a lot different than the one I was using on the road.

[Kuro just sighs, and looks at Armin. Because, while that is true, how does his Trainer mess up a tent?]

Probably not. I mean, this place has been explored before, after all.

[But it's still fun to poke around. See if there happens to be anything overlooked.]

If the other version of me never has to deal with this, I'm gonna be pissed.

[suddenly reminded of the fact that prime venkman canonically thinks rgb venkman has "daddy issues" in those exact words and now my soul is withering-]

Not even gonna take a minute to set up camp, huh? Sure, but I dunno if your giant centaurpede's gonna fit in there.

[She grinned.] I'm really into the supernatural and all that. But I never got a chance to talk about it with friends. We've got time for the Doduo, take your time.

"Sorta. There's also this other idea. The Traveller's dogma, where you should just give generously and without hesitation. Problem is the people who got everything handed to 'em could do crap to take care of 'emselves when somethin' with sword logic rolled in. And it happened over an' over an' over and the Traveller bailed on 'em each time. Anyway, yeah, I'd rather just take it easy." He absolutely agrees there as he turns the marshmallow.

"At least the things here into sword logic don't seem to be much for killin' an' they don't got a hate on for us. I'll take the big enemies from space if they come padded with a heavy layer of 'not gonna kill humans', know what I'm sayin'."

[Yeah, that walking science experiment is a dead giveaway. Especially for other pokemon. Kuro remembers Snitter from the beach incident, and makes a beeline for the weird little guy, dragging Shiro in his wake.]

[Give him a second to recognize her...]

Heather? [And a once-over.] Your hair looks... like you stole my look.

[Yeah, Armin is really not understanding the issue here.]

I was never expecting any different.

[He's camped out a lot, both here during his travels, and back home during his training.]

... have you never gone camping before?

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to take any good pictures, but--

[His expression becomes more animated, excitement with a conspiratorily touch.]

You won't really see anything during the day. It just looks like any other patch of ocean. But if you wait until night, you can see there is actually a giant Starmie right there. [Armin taps the water on the map.] And I do mean giant. It's easily ten times the size of any Starmie I've ever seen. At night, especially when the moon is full, it'll light up its core, and you can see its light shining all the way through the water. I don't know how long it has been there, but it must be old. Very old.

We'll probably be best off taking it apart completely.

[Sometimes, some parts can be salvaged. Not this time, though.]

Athena can help. She has a real knack for putting things together.

"I don't think I'd be particularly good at scaring people."

Look at him Marceline. Look at his round little face, cute button nose, and big blue eyes. Is this the face of a scarer? No, no it is not. But really that is mostly because Armin is a bit of a stick in the mud who doesn't see the fun in jumping out from behind a wall to frighten someone.

"Besides, would that even work? You'd know it was coming, wouldn't you? Without the element of surprise, I doubt it would be effective at all."

That's amazing. I wonder if it's actually contacting something in space. If someone could find a way to communicate with it....

I'm still not even sure what they're trying to do here. Summon ghost pokemon, summon human ghosts. Other ghosts? Legendary pokemon? Monsters?

[Geez, this is like nerd central. Lena's always up for a bit of troublemaking or poking around dark and spooky places, but all the people here... that takes the fun out of it. This whole camping expedition is making the ruins seem more like some kind of tourist trap than actual spooky fun-to-explore ruins, so Lena's interest has been fading fast.

But... Webby has been pretty excited about it. So she's gunna stay. And maybe go bother some people she knows; but when she sees Venkman, she can see he's more bothered by other people, and Lena lets out a snorting laugh as she watches him argue with some of the other Legend Seekers.]

Oh man, "spirit boxes" [said complete with air quotes] are super hokey things people on ghost hunting shows use. Something about scanning radio signals and picking up voices in the static? It's hilariously fake.

No problem! It's pretty hard to get horribly lost here at least.

Right now the Ruins- it seems like a good place to look if you ask me! These are clearly the remains of an old civilization, so it's likely this place would be ripe with ghosts!

Whatever it is, they better have a solid plan- having no particular ghost in mind for seances is just begging for any creature to barge in.

I hear that's how many demons are accidenally summoned too.
