3rd Recipe [Cherrygrove City, Video]
[Today's video from Jane starts with a shot of the water and a faint, violin-like accompaniment to the background music. It's clear it's at the small, beach-y area of Cherrygrove, judging by the surroundings, but that's only noticeable for a moment before a Goldeen floats into the shot, happily swimming as an Audino tries to follow alongside in the shallows, a bit wobbly in the water. The shot retracts, showing a Kricketune using its arm-blades to make the delicate violin sounds, stopping with a flourish for his audience - a small, sparkling Fennekin with soot-grey fur. It gives a Fen! of approval before it turns, noticing Jane's filming and hurrying over (in its haste, it kicks up sand in the Kricketune's face, and the poor bug proceeds to fret and fuss over his mustache).]
Hoo hoo! Hello, August! [The feed shifts, focusing on Jane where she sits, a boater perched expertly on her head. The top of the Fennekin's head can be seen as it curls up in her lap.] And hello everyone! I thought a little bit of a scene-setter would be nice to start with today, considering I have a question for you all.
[She clears her throat expertly.] I've been wondering about what sort of places all the people here come from. What are they like? For humans, do you come from Earth? What is your Earth like? If not, what is your home planet like? How similar or different was it to this place? For folks who weren't human before coming here - and I am aware that is a thing that happens - what were your homes like? If they don't translate well to human conventions, you can talk about it broadly or go into detail, whichever you prefer. I've been a staunch skeptic for most of my life, but I do earnestly want to learn, and in return, I'd be glad to field some questions about my home! I can't say it's particularly interesting, but it's only fair to share, right?

When Cloud appears on the video feed, he's in the midst of a break from walking with his traveling companions, the blonde settled on a log as he sips at some water. Something moves in his hair and then a pair of shiny purple eyes peers out as Junon gets curious about the Pokegear.]
From what I've heard about Earth, my home planet is similar to it. There's a lot more magic involved where I'm from and monsters that I guess Earth doesn't have. But it seems pretty identical in terms of the planet itself.
[Though apparently Earth didn't have the Lifestream which he found strange.]
What kind of magic exactly? We didn't really have monsters until...well, I didn't encounter monsters until things got hectic, but a friend of mine apparently lived on an island full of them - but magic was definitely something that could be considered something different where I'm from.
Elemental magic was a big part of what we had. Summoning magic was something you could get your hands on. Strength boosts. That sort of thing. We called it materia. Different colored materia were different types of magic. They basically looked like glowing orbs that you could use to enhance weapons or yourself.

Jupiter, Florida, actually, nineteen fifty one! It's...uh...Earth? I mean, it's normal. I dunno how else to describe it. We got...cars and a president and Royal Crown cola and Coney Island...

It was November, 1951, when I left home. Truman was in the White House, Lucille Ball was keeping everybody inside cause she got her own television show, and somebody made a phone call from New York to California without needing an operator to connect!
Which I guess ain't too impressive, since we're talking to each other on tiny TV screens that work like telephones and it in our hands...

[Cause that's a thing that happened recently.]

[The Fennekin leans back onto Jane, looking up at her, paws raised in an attempt to bat at her. Look at him, he loves his Mamma.]
Did you?

[She sets the Gear down for a moment, looking offscreen.]
Frost, come here-
[The camera shifts back to Penny, now holding a small Piplup.]
He hatched a few days ago.

What were your islands like?
no subject
[ so it seems like a long time ago. ]
Our islands are really just one main island and a few other little ones. Right off the coast we have our play island. Nothing really changes there. Things just go on as they always have.

I take it we do not exist in your world?
I'm afraid you'll have to be more specific, sir. "Monsters" is a generic term for any kind of supernatural beast where I'm from, and only exist in stories.

It is in our souls that our similarities lie. They are what give us our magic, but they are physically weaker than human souls. They dissolve when we die...save for boss monster souls, but those linger only a moment.

Weeeeellll....I do live on Earth but I wouldn't exactly call it normal. It's not everyday that you get to encounter gnomes, demons, time traveling weirdos, and a whole bunch of mushy stuff in between too!

Oh! In Gravity Falls, right? Your brother mentioned it to me.

["Doing shit out in space" is a thing she's now heard of three times, counting Johto's apparent moon party.]
How in the world can you make those work? Aside from Mars, aren't planets with anything close to resembling Earth's atmosphere very, very, very far away?

[he doesn't have a lot of reference for comparison, honestly. what's strange about
a world full of giant robots and people with supernatural powersthe world he's lived in for his entire life? so he opts for the political climate, because that seems like a thing that could differ considerably.]The US and the USSR are using Afghanistan as the site of a proxy war, with the CIA financially backing the rebelling Mujahideen instead of confronting the Soviets directly. Both superpowers are backing Iraq against Iran due to concerns about Islamic revolution and trying to keep Iraq as their own ally, but the ground's more or less at a stalemate and Iraq's started using their air force to bomb tankers and cities. Mozambique, Ethiopia, El Salvador, and a half a dozen other countries are embroiled in civil wars, with the US and USSR involved in a few of them.
We've come close to nuclear war a few times, but so far it's been narrowly avoided at the last second.
Oh gosh, I'm glad that was avoided at least. You can't exactly solve conflicts when everything's blown up and barren. Are you a soldier, sir?

The colonies are crazy varied, but I'm pretty sure most of them pretty much just want to be like Earth. I didn't go to many places that weren't military bases. Since we were kind of at war with aliens hellbent on wiping out all of humanity.
That's not a thing anymore, I'm pretty sure, but still, military bases. And army outposts. Lemmie tell you, seeing suburbia and city life has been great.
no subject
Golly, there sure are a lot of you folks from space around here. And from what the internet has revealed about the insanity that is the state of Florida, I can definitely believe it's not terribly missed. Well, save for Disney World, I'm sure.
But, ah...exactly what kind of aliens were you at war with?

[Well, it's not hip-hop, but you should still recognize talent where you see it.]
And, uh, I guess the biggest difference between here and home is either the video-gamey music playing everywhere, or the monsters. I mean, we had a ton of monsters at home, but they usually kinda kept to themselves and weren't that well known, y'know? 'Cept the gnomes, those little dudes got ALL OVER.
[Let's just show the video back to the Kricketune as he's meticulously cleaning his face and 'stache with some of the water.]
But, ah, anyway - did I hear you correctly when you said "gnomes"?
