No fins anywhere, just magic tattoos that denote her as an incredible powerful almost god-like siren back home with control over all sorts of technology.

"No, I meant." His voice dropped a bit, embarrassed. "With me. She sees me as a friend. Just a friend."

"Hey, don't sell yourself short," Jean replied, in an attempt to bolster Armin's ego. Even though Armin refused to bolster his in the recent past. What a giving person, Jean was. "You've got your own..."

Jean made a general gesture at all of Armin. If he were as french as his name, he would have said je ne sais quois.

"...Appeal? You're, uh... Soft? Some girls are into that."

He would have added "nonthreatening," but then remembered the Armin he knew from their world, and thought better of it.

Soft was the best Jean could do? Armin's brows wrinkled at that.

"Yes. You make me sound like an amazing catch right now."

Armin might not have bolstered Jean's ego in past (though really, it did not need it) but Jean wasn't having much success bolstering his right now either.

"It's fine. I'll get over it if I just wait it out."

"I'm serious! A lot of girls like cute. Y'know, like kittens and puppies and stuff."

...Yeah, he's doing a horrible job, but at least he cares enough about Armin to try.

"What would it hurt to try? The worst she could do is say no, and then you'd just be back at square one. I doubt she'd totally cut you off just for being interested in a relationship."

Jean should do everybody a favour and not become any sort of relationship coach. Seriously. He sucks at this.

"It'd make things awkward between us." No, Armin certainly didn't think Angel would cut him off, but wouldn't they both end up second-guessing everything they'd do? Everything that came so easy now, whether it was laughing together, hanging out, or casually touching would be tinged with the knowledge of his awkward crush. And Armin was going to say no thank you to that. He had never confessed to Mr Newt and he wasn't going to start confessing to Angel now.

"I hate to break it to you," Jean shrugged. "But things are going to be awkward for you from here on out, whether you like it or not. Every time you get close to her, you're gonna start thinking what it might be like to hold her, or kiss her... At night you're gonna stare up at the ceiling and wonder about what your wedding would be like, how your kids would be..."

It sounded like Jean had a lot of experience with pining.

So... that was how Jean had felt about Mikasa. It felt a bit awkward to hear Jean say it. Like Armin was getting a glimpse into a very private part of Jean that was, apparently, a giant sap.

"That... might be so, but at least it'll just be me feeling awkward, and not her."

Jean's ego was more buoyant. It could probably handle rejection a bit better than Armin's rather fragile self-esteem. Better to keep it to himself and not open himself up to hurt.

"Self-sacrificing to a fault, huh."

Jean was pretty well acquainted with that fact about Armin now, and it seemed to pervade into nearly every aspect of his life.

"All I'm saying is, if we get to enjoy the civilian life here, we might as well enjoy all of it, right? But I think I'm gonna stop now. You're damn stubborn when you put your mind to it, and I'm not gonna change it in one sitting."

And he knew that if Armin really wanted advice in the future, he'd come to him on his own. No use in pushing him now.
