Who: Manaka & OPEN
Where: An appliance store in Goldenrod
When: During the second half of September
Summary: Manaka attempts to catch a Pokémon, fails, cries.

[Goldenrod City is a strange place to Manaka. Some parts of it are like looking through a fun house mirror, where bits and pieces are recognizable but the shape has been irreparably warped by unfamiliar rules. Other parts are no different from any city she could find at home—and therefore boring and unworthy of her time.
She had been ready to write the appliance store off as the later, until she caught sight of something cute inside. Instantly, she was infatuated, so she dispatched Charlotte to bring it to her.
It was close, but before Manaka could catch it, it skittered further inside.
Finding it again had been something of a chore. The Rotom had an advantage when it came to knowledge of the terrain, and the zigzagging way it moved made it difficult to track when all Manaka had was her eyes. It must have led her on a chase through half the store, but finally, Manaka corners it against a wall lined with washing machines.]
Found you! [Her tone of voice is nothing but indulgent.] Are you ready to stop playing hide and seek now?
[In reply, the Rotom makes a sound that is unmistakably a giggle, and then it dives right into the washing machine closest. A moment later, that washing machine spews out an impressive, and perfectly aimed, stream of water.
Charlotte goes down in an instant, of course, leaving Manaka to stand there in sopping wet and wide-eyed shock.]
Ah—ahaha! [It's a strange feeling, the knowledge that she's been outplayed creeping up her spine. The novelty of it makes her laugh, even as water rolls down her legs and drips from the ends of her hair.] You got me!
[She leans down, scooping Charlotte into her arms. She could send out another Pokémon, but the other two she owns... They're both much weaker than Charlotte, so Manaka decides it would be wisest to retreat for now.
...Plus, she needs a change of clothes. She can already feel her soggy jacket sticking to her back.]
That was fun! Let's play again some other time.

[The first time Manaka caught a Pokémon on her own, it had been easy. Like everything else she had ever done, she had breezed through it as a natural, excelling while barely expending any effort.
So why was this little ghost giving her so much trouble?
The novelty of having to try had faded after the second time. Manaka's frustration is visible in even the way she walks, now, her scowl as she stalks the aisles a sharp contrast to the playful way she had chased after this Rotom on their first meeting. When an appliance leaps off the shelf in front of her, she isn't terribly surprised this time—except, rather than pulling some clever trick, the Rotom simply attempts to hurtle past her, escaping back the way she came.]
Oh, don't you dare—!
[She whirls to follow it, but evidently, it has decided that it doesn't want that waffle iron after all. It drops it as it soars overhead, giving Manaka a solid whack to the top of the skull as it escapes.
Unsurprisingly, she squawks and flops to her knees, pursuit abandoned in favor of grazing her fingers over the point of impact. Even as the initial flare of pain fades, though, Manaka feels herself tearing up—and not from the lingering sting. She isn't so young that she can get away with throwing a tantrum in the middle of an appliance store, and yet... She clamps her jaw shut, lip wobbling dangerously.]

[She wants to snap at him — something rare, coming from Manaka. She manages to suppress the impulse, though, and instead, she just sniffles.]
A Pokémon. It's called a Rotom. [There's a telltale tremble in her voice, but at least she doesn't actually burst into tears.] They're... They're really smart.
[They have to be. How else could this one keep getting away?]

[Which...might be a little dark for a kid to say, but. She lets him check her over, dropping her hands and dabbing at her eyes with the corner of her sleeve instead.]
I've been chasing it all week. It keeps escaping before I can catch it. [sniff] There's no blood, right?

[Which was good considering he was usually covered in it but not here. The kid seemed fine apart from an obvious bump on the head caused by the Rotom.]
