Anon Text | Mingle

[On the evening of the 13th, an anon text appears on the network. And wanting to stay anon, Jaskier decides to drop the cursive font he usually uses and try to tune down the flowery language. Will he succeed, though?]

Valentine's Day is tomorrow! A day to celebrate love and romance in all their forms! A perfect opportunity to have a scrumptious evening together with your beloved, or to confess to the secret object of your heart's profound affections!

[Already trying to sound like an expert as if he hadn't learned about this only a couple of days ago, that's Jaskier for you.]

I am aware, however, that not everyone has someone in their lives, and such a holiday may make them feel a little lonely. That is why I decided to share this little game I recently learned about! Everybody deserves to be flattered every now and then, and who knows! Maybe you may end up finding a date for tomorrow~.

They call this game "Hot or Not". The rules are very simple! You post a picture (or many!) of yourself, and other participants will let you know how attractive they think you are. Some people opt for only saying yes or no, but others prefer a rating system, like a scale of one to ten, or using a certain amount of stars.

Don't be shy! Tonight the world is at your feet.

[Jaskier, you totally suck at being anonymous.]

((ooc: Yep, this is the Hot or Not meme done ICly! I pitched the idea and plurk liked it so here it's a mingle for everyone to go crazy. Characters are welcome to post pictures of themselves, or their Pokémon, or even their friends (always check with the other player first, please!). Go around and rate, threadjack, complain about the network being used for this, the sky is your limit! Staying anon is absolutely an option for those shy souls out there, but "logging in" is also welcome! Just make sure to point out what your character is chooing on your tag. It would be really appreciated if you link the images instead of embedding them so this post doesn't become too heavy to load, especially for those on mobile. Remember to warn for any nsfw pictures that you may be using! Definitely don't embed those. I'll be turning notifs off for this post for obvious reasons so any questions/issues/etc please don't hesitate to pm/pp me! Have fun~))

I was going to make a joke about you living up to your name, but then I remembered that the Latin word for cat is spelled with an S, not an X.

my name?
I'm not familiar with latin.
there's a word that means cat
that's spelled felis?

[That's...weird. He feels oddly self-conscious about that for some reason, even though it's just a word in a language that doesn't even exist in Fodlan.]

Latin's an ancient language in my world. No one speaks it anymore outside of Vatican City unless it's for religious ceremonies. And the word that means cat is spelled 'felis,' yeah. It's in the scientific name for the domestic cat, which is the main reason I know it. It's where we get the word 'feline' from, which can mean cat-like or cat-related.

I know what 'feline' means.
but
that language doesn't exist in my world.
so how did we get that word?
wait.
is the word 'aegis' from that language too?
fingersandteeth: (looking over)

[personal profile] fingersandteeth 2021-02-15 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it is, yes.

You might have an ancient language that's Latin-esque perhaps? Or perhaps the translation effect is merely making us think our words for 'feline' are the same words when really it's substituting your word for cat-like or cat-related for mine when you read this. It's hard to judge, because 'feline' is a word in my first language (English) even if it has a Latin root and I believe the translation effect works best on everyone's first languages.

[personal profile] bestswordmaster 2021-02-15 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
maybe.
it's a word in my first language too.
but I've never heard of english.
and 'felis' still sounds like my name.
and my name isn't a translation.
idk this is confusing.
and weird.
but interesting.
fingersandteeth: (listening)

[personal profile] fingersandteeth 2021-02-15 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
It really is, isn't it?

But yeah. Considering that 'Felix' itself is a Latin derived name in my world (but not from the word for cat, but the word for 'luck') that makes it likely that one of the ancient languages in your world *is* more or less like the Latin of mine. It's just likely called something other than 'Latin.' Do any of your friends study ancient languages? Perhaps they'd know more.

[personal profile] bestswordmaster 2021-02-15 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
oh.
my name does mean 'luck'
according to my
family.
idk but claude studies pretty much everything.
he might know.
I'll go get him.
fingersandteeth: (earnest)

[personal profile] fingersandteeth 2021-02-15 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll wait while you get him.
vrdantwind: (Is waiting for you)

[personal profile] vrdantwind 2021-02-15 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been fetched! So we're talking languages, huh?
fingersandteeth: (explain)

[personal profile] fingersandteeth 2021-02-15 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
We are! We've noticed that certain words derived from one of the ancient languages of my world (Latin) seem to have similar etymology to the same words in your world, Felix's name in particular. In my world, it comes from the Latin word for 'luck' and Felix tells me that it has the same meaning in your world.
vrdantwind: (What could you be afraid of)

[personal profile] vrdantwind 2021-02-15 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been wondering about that too, actually. My name was inspired by an ancestor of mine, Claudia von Riegan...and I've met a Claudia here. Not too weird on the face of it, but isn't it strange that completely different worlds would have the same kinds of names?

Then again, I haven't heard any names similar to the names from my homeland. Only names such as you might find in one specific continent from back home. So it seems like localized similarity...

It definitely feels as though at least certain languages from our worlds have common ancestors. You'd think that would be impossible, though. And then it raises the question of why some languages seem to be held in common, but others don't...although maybe my first language does have similarities to other languages from your world. But unless you know a lot of languages, we may not be able to compare notes about that...
fingersandteeth: (lean forward)

(Steven is bilingual but his player is not)

[personal profile] fingersandteeth 2021-02-16 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
I'm actually bilingual. My second language is Spanish—well, the Mexican version, but I understand the European dialect as well. It was my grandparents' first language, so I grew up speaking it with them. Anyway, those two are *my* only languages, but I've heard quite a few more being spoken out loud—a number of my friends back home are immigrants or the children of—so there's a chance I might recognize some others by sound or spelling.

Claudia is a Latin name too, I think? There was an emperor named Claudius, I remember, and Claudia is the feminine form of the name. I've seen 'Claude' used as a name itself back home as well. Was your ancestor from Felix's neck of the woods?

I do actually have a theory about why there are those commonalities, but I'm not sure if this is the place to discuss it. The, ah, implications of it have been known to drive men to drink. But if you're interested, hit me in my inbox and I'll tell you.
