What sort of tools would be required to dismantle a pokeball? Has anyone else attempted such a thing? There's nothing quite like this device where I am from, it's very intriguing!
Oh, and one other thing, I almost forgot. Must one battle to obtain their pokemon? Some of them appear quite friendly, so perhaps merely offering them the pokeball would suffice? I'll have to do some studies about this, too….
So much to do, it seems. One hardly knows where to begin!

I would not recommend dismantling a Pokeball if you have just arrived. There is no shop which sells them in New Bark. I am also not sure of how safe it is.
At any rate, one need not necessarily battle to have one agree to be your companion. Some will demand it, as battle is a source of pride, but others have their own reasons. It depends upon the individual.

The nearest town to New Bark, Cherrygrove, is three days away.

Of course, in some cases, one can be fortunate enough to find a sled or sleigh to purchase, as I have, but that is a rare thing.
Although that reminds me that when you arrive in Cherrygrove, you will want to register your Pokegear with something they call "warp pads". They connect to the nearest town, and allow you almost instantaneous travel from one to the next, if both points recognize your Pokegear. It is good if you wish to go back to a town you have already visited.

Battling isn't necessary. Some pokemon will only follow a trainer that has earned their respect through battle, but there are also many that will be willing to form a bond based on something else. Food is usually a good one. And you can always hatch them yourself too.
I'm guessing you must be new. Allow me to introduce myself, I'm Armin. I've been in this world for some time, so if you have any questions, I can try and answer them.
Re: text;
It's a pleasure to meet you. My name is Leonardo. You mentioned food, what do these pokemon prefer to eat? I wouldn't mind sharing my own, of course, but if there's something that would suit them better, well, the choice is clear. I suppose it might vary from species to species?
text;
Ah, don't eat them yourself though. They really aren't fit for human consumption. You don't want to deal with the results, believe me.

If you're interested in the construction of pokeballs, might I suggest visiting Kurt the Ball-Maker in Azalea Town? He crafts them the old-fashioned way, using apricorns and homemade electronics. Perhaps if you ask nicely he'd be willing to show you how he does it?
(The ones Fake Mom gives us in our bags and the ones you can buy in the pokemarts are the more modern version from SilphCo, but those come from a factory assembly line.)
no subject
Would you happen to know what these Apricorns might look like? I'd hate to arrive empty-handed.
I have no qualms when it comes to modern machinery, you understand, but sometimes one must simplify in order to understand the method at work.
no subject
And yes, actually, I've got a picture I snapped of a pink apricorn tree when I was in Azalea Town for work last summer. One moment.
[And Leonardo will get what's basically this image once it's finished loading.]
They actually come in a fair number of colors, but they're all more or less shaped that way. I believe they mostly grow in Azalea itself these days? Kurt has his own orchard, I know.
no subject
Oh! Such bright colors! I shall keep my eye out for these as I go. And berries, too, of course. Not to mention the pokemon I may encounter along the way. I can see why so many travel by foot in this area. So many things that are easy to overlook if one is not paying very close attention.

I mean, I'm no good at that stuff anyway, but I can't see any screws on these things even now that I'm looking at one more carefully!
And yeah, sometimes Pokemon just follow you.

But now I'm really just wondering how you're supposed to take it apart without breaking it.

That said, I've never thought about dismantling a PokéBall. Make sure it's an empty one if you do, all right? I've got no idea how it'd affect a pokémon if you did it to their own personal ball, and they don't deserve to be risked on an experiment.
Also, I'd recommend waiting until you've got the funds to buy plenty of balls. If you're a new arrival, which is my working hypothesis, then you're likely to be short on both balls and funds for a little while. Best to conserve both.
I can confirm that not all pokémon need to be battled to be acquired! Although I'll be honest with you, the circumstances of catching pokémon in other ways tend to be unique and unpredictable, to say the least. But if a pokémon wants to come with you, catching it is practically a formality, and battling them probably won't be necessary at all.
You don't have to stress too much about the battling, though, if it's the ethics that concern you. Most pokémon view battling as a friendly competition for the purposes of growing stronger, and growing stronger is basically a part of their life cycles for some of them - they literally can't move to the next stage of their lives without it. Some prefer to avoid combat or stay in certain parts of their life cycles, of course, but they tend to be in the minority. Most of them seek out trainers specifically to form a symbiotic relationship so they can grow and evolve, and combat's a big part of that for them.

They're much different from the creatures I know. Not entirely, but in terms of what they are capable of and the powers that they seem to be able to use quite skillfully. Tackling and strong glares are one thing, but whips made of their own vines are another! I shall have to sketch these moves as they occur, so that I might understand how these pokemon are capable of such things. And if that is the case, then I am sure I need not worry so much about these battles, for they are sure to find me.
no subject
So you're an artist, I gather? One of my friends back home is, too. But he does more painting than sketching.
no subject
And yes, I am an artist. I do a lot of painting, too, but it is difficult to do so at the moment as I'm lacking some supplies. Not to mention a suitable canvas.

last week I accidentally hit a tentacool with a shell and my ralts fended her off
but then convinced her to join my team.
she liked the idea of a seasoned warrior as a trainer.
a jellyfish after my own heart.
one of my boyfriends usually ends up with pokemon just falling into his lap though.
not literally.
