Beach fun for beach bums

Summary: Come to Cianwood today to celebrate the solstice, participate in a race and maybe even get a date??



June 21st. The solstice. The longest day of the year. Practically half the year gone already, which frankly, seems rather insane. It seems like only yesterday you were all fighting to save Christmas with Santa, and yet, that was almost six months ago! How can that be? We just don't know. Time is a force even more mysterious than pokemon evolution.

In any case, Cianwood has gone all out to make this solstice a great big celebration. The beach is awash with bright-coloured umbrellas and stands, selling everything a visitor might need to make this into one hell of a day (and, let's be real, also a lot of things you don't need, but hey, who doesn't want a nice souvenir?) Rental stands have everything from surfboards to huge inner tubes for rent for those who want to stay at the surface of the water, as well as snorkelling equipment for those who won't mind taking a peek below the surface. On a cleared stretch of beach, a small Sand Castle Contest is being organised. The prize won't be anything fancy (just a token little reward, really) but why not enter? Don't worry, there are separate prizes for kids and adults. Meanwhile, large piles of wood have been stacked here and there, waiting for evening to fall so the bonfires can be lit.

One particular section of the beach is a riot of different smells, with various restaurants and other establishments having set up stands to sell you all the very best. It doesn't matter what you are in the mood for, because you won't have any trouble finding it here! Want some BBQ? It's there; several Sizzlepede keeping those coals nice and hot while the cooks chuck everything that can vaguely be chucked onto those grills. Would you rather cool down with some ice cream? No problem; just as long as you can actually make a choice from all those different flavours available. Has the summer sun put you in a fruit mood? Watermelons (whole and cut), strawberries, cherries, papaya -- it's too much to name!

Or do you maybe just want a drink? It's important to keep hydrated, you know! Juice, water, mocktails and cocktails, everything that you could possibly want to stave off the heat is there. There is even coffee and teas available for those who need their daily worship at the Church of Caffeine. Just don't overheat on them!

And, of course, there is the race.

It looks like the first-ever SEMPER race has drawn quite the crowd. And where there is a crowd, there are more souvenir stands. Why not buy a flag or two to cheer on your pokemon? Or maybe you should buy an 'I ran the SEMPER race and all I got was this lousy t-shirt' for your pokemon to commemorate the occasion. They sell them in all sorts of sizes.

And then there is that mystery section of beach, currently cordoned off with ropes and screens. Signs let everybody know that this is where the Helping Hand auction will be taking place later tonight, but if you had hoped to get an early peek at the decorations or items up for auction, you will be sorely disappointed. Be patient and wait like everybody else is.

So come all and enjoy the beach. Participate in a race maybe, and pull your wallets for tonight's charity event. After all, who knows when disaster might strike again? Better enjoy things while you can!

For his part, Leonardo has also been splattered with watermelon bits. Which is... kind of a good thing, because he hadn't been paying attention otherwise.

Canto squawks indignantly. HE'S BEEN FRAMED. FRAMED FOR WATERMELON CRIMES.

Leonardo sighs, good humored. "Well. At least we've got snacks for later."

At least someone here is relaxed. Dimitri just makes his way over to the two, frowning and still holding the first and currently unvandalized watermelon.

"Snacks that we will have to pay for, and that have been butchered by a beak," he says sternly, looking a Vivillon and Staraptor both. "You two didn't steal that from anyone, did you?"

Canto is denying everything. HE WAS FRAMED. AND ALSO IT WAS NOT STOLEN. Granted, he is saying this entirely in indignant squawking noises, so it may not be entirely understandable.

"I believe I saw them stacked up over there, earlier." Leonardo gestures to the stand nearby. "I do not think they have stolen from anyone, or at least, anyone that we can not fix by repaying them fairly quickly."

How much could a watermelon cost, anyway. Ten dollars?

It's fine; Dimitri understands the loud noises that Pokemon make. He may not get the words, but he understands a lot of The Vibe. So he just sighs, and holds the still intact watermelon close to his chest so that Gillian can't get it.

"At least it was just the one watermelon... I should have known something like this would happen when I let two troublemakers out in such a crowded place."

"Perhaps we might split the results of their handiwork."

He wouldn't say no to a tasty snack right now, and look, this one already comes cut up.

Can something like this really be called 'cut up'... As he hands over some money to the stall owner to make up for the watermelon - it's just one, it should be fine for now - Dimitri looks back at Leonardo.

"Is it fine to eat it like this, then?"

Leonardo picks up a piece of the demolished melon, and without much thought, takes a bite of the pink part, avoiding the green speckled rind.

"I can confirm this, yes. It's quite tasty!"

Ha. Well, he can't argue with that, and Dimitri returns sans a whole and undestroyed melon. He does have a rather fussy Vivillon, however, who is sulky that she couldn't use her own move for a melon explosion.

"It's good to see that you're in good spirits, then. From what I've seen, most people cut it a bit more neatly."

Don't worry, Leonardo is sure Vivillon will have her chance again, sooner or later.

"If it tastes this good, it hardly matters how it's cut, as it will end up in my stomach just the same." Leonardo concedes.

Don't encourage her, Leo.

Returning to the small group that's gathered, Dimitri chuckles. "You aren't wrong," he agrees, since he knows that's the kind of view he's held in the past - especially for the past five years he lived in his homeland. "Still, it is a bit messy, and you may participate in the auction later, won't you? It would be a shame to start bidding in such a state."

"I'm sure I'll have time to make myself look more presentable before the bidding begins," Leonardo concedes. He hasn't even changed into his nice suit yet.

"I'm glad." Watermelon is terribly sticky, after all. Setting down the cracked open watermelon down on the nearest and unoccupied table, Dimitri rubs along hte back of his neck. Terrible. He might actually have to go swimming to get some of this off of him.

While breaking pieces of watermelon off for each of the Pokemon - yes, with his bare hands, don't worry about it - Dimitri looks up to Leonardo. "So, did you come to Olivine just for the auction, or were you going to arrive here regardless?"

Leonardo eats some of the melon, as his Staravia pecks at some of the unwatched over portions. He is momentarily distracted when Dimitri breaks open some more for his pokemon, but when he regains his focus, he smiles.

"I would have attended the race regardless, I think. But the auction definitely doesn't hurt."

"It promises to be an exciting event," Dimitri agrees, letting one of the Vivillon rest along his arm and eat watermelon from his hand. The wings get in his face a little bit, but it's nothing that's too bothersome, honestly. Besides, at least he knows where they are if he keeps them on himself.

"But there is also the gym to consider, along with the Safari Zone... Plenty of other attractions here. Do you have any interest in those?"

"I had visited the Safari Zone the last time I was here -- during that dance, I believe? And I am not particularly interested in these gym badges."

"Some cannot get enough of the place," Dimitri chuckles, forcing his hand to stay still - or rather, both Vivillon teaming up on his hand to force it to stay still as they get every bit of watermelon that they can. "We have gone there multiple times. Still, sometimes once is enough, or the visits sparing.

"Are you a breeder of some sort then, Leonardo?"

"Oh, no. I merely intend to capture pokemon with my drawings, not through battle."

[nastyboy]

"Of course." Dimitri smiles fondly. "This sort of place really is a haven for a creative mind, isn't it?"

"There are so many creatures here that I have never seen before. And all kinds of devices, too."

[nastyboy]

"Oh, absolutely. There are so many new things here that I never cease to be surprised and fascinated by them." Dimitri leans back in his seat a bit, smiling. "What devices are there that intrigue you the most?"

"The way pokeballs can collapse so easily to a smaller size is particularly fascinating. It is not easy to make something with that effect, even if one were to hollow out an apricorn to see what's inside."

"That's true..." Dimitri lets his Vivillon crawl off of him, the pair picking at the watermelon that's still left. "I didn't think about it too hard since there was so much to focus on, but it is a peculiar mechanic. It moves so smoothly as well, doesn't it?"

"Yes! The smoothness of the motion is difficult to replicate. And then there is the matter of capturing pokemon which are almost universally much larger in size, while keeping them comfortable within the ball's confines."

Of course - one of the most notable things about Pokeballs, their ability to keep such enormous creatures contained. Dimitri tilts his head to the side. "When I first arrived, I simply thought it was magic, and thought little of it. Then, as I adjusted, and saw the pure scope of technology, I simply thought it was that. After all, I do not understand how electricity works. Still, these are reasons why I am not a scholar of any sort. I am ill suited to such things."

He is but a simple jock.

"To be completely honest, electricity is something of a mystery to me as well."

Has that stopped him from doing experiments to learn more? Heck no.
