[ Surprise surprise, it's time for a network update on Byleth's adventures, courtesy of the one and only Nyaff!! The feed showcases both the lead-up to a battle at the Cerulean gym, showcasing the interior, what crowd has gathered to watch, and Mandagot lounging by Nyaff as stoic as ever, then inevitably shifts to the battlefield as Byleth's very first gym challenge commences! ]

[ It's not all that flashy, with much of Byleth's team sticking to more understated but powerful moves when they're not following their trainer's instruction to evade attacks, but there's no denying this is a battle with a ton of preparation behind it. ]

MY BEST FRIENDS!! LOOK THEM GO! 💖💕😭 WORK SO HARD

[ As the battle carries on Nyaff makes sure to engage in the text chat himself by both text and voice, delivering a storm of emoji to the message feed and making sure there is no missing the fact that he's extremely proud of his teammates and having a good time. He even does a little QnA about the team and their training! ]

[ When things are finally finished - a sparkling victory dealt by Levin's impressive application of electricity against Starmie - the camera flips around to showcase a very happy but very weepy Meowth. With text chat abandoned he now defaults to simply meowing his feelings to whoever may be watching. This is thankfully short, however, as Byleth is quick to reunite with their friends in the audience and quickly scoop Nyaff up into their arms for some very important soothing. ]

[ It is at Nyaff's urging that they take the Gear and begin speaking. They look...tired. A lot has happened this month. But they're pleased with the results of this challenge nonetheless. ]

Thank you all for watching, and thank you to those of you who contributed to this. [ They haven't forgotten the encouragements they've gotten through the Network, nor the extremely helpful suggestions from Sion for working with their partner pokemon. The Absol in question is standing beside his trainer now, proud and unafraid. ]

I have high hopes this is only the beginning of a new campaign for us. Please be sure to give Nyaff some thanks for documenting and entertaining, too.

Video; this being backdated conveniently puts it BEFORE his little breakdown...

This was your first gym challenge? Then I believe congratulations are in order. Especially since it appears you put some considerable effort into your strategy.

*he's a bit impressed honestly. Not many newbies think things through that thoroughly!*
dreamsofahero: (just talking)

tl;dr various factors conspired to compromise his coping mechanisms with predictable results

[personal profile] dreamsofahero 2021-09-08 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
It's certainly one of the more elaborate first matches I've seen. I admit I'm rather curious to see how you'd do at the Collegiate Gym. Though as it looks like you're traveling Kanto, I imagine you won't be heading this way for some time.
dreamsofahero: (talkative)

someone should start a support group for characters with traumatic backgrounds....

[personal profile] dreamsofahero 2021-09-08 06:27 pm (UTC)(link)
*it's pretty much exactly the kind of battle and thinking his own gym matches are designed to encourage: team and support move synergy over brute force type advantages. And something few newcomers quickly grasp, so of course Sion considers it praiseworthy*

Many don't put in that effort, however. Or don't realize the usefulness in doing so.

*he wonders idly if Byleth will pick up on the brutally effective uses of Absol's Perish Song as he did... but best not to say anything and risk biasing the matter*

Of course. And there's certainly no need to rush, given how long many of us seem to end up staying here.
dreamsofahero: (conversational)

knowing there's others struggling with similar issues would surely do all of them good!

[personal profile] dreamsofahero 2021-09-08 07:53 pm (UTC)(link)
*Sion notices that flicker, but, well, you know what? He doesn't feel like dwelling on that topic either right now, come to think of it*

That's not without reason, you know. Most of the gyms, and even the Elite Four, all have particular types they favor. Playing to that advantage is both simple and pragmatic, if nothing else, and I believe those matches do help trainers learn the various strengths and weaknesses of the different types.

However, as you've already demonstrated, those are not the only strategies. And should you want to challenge others who've also completed their own gym circuit, being able to face matches where you might not always have such an easy advantage is quite important indeed.

Ah, but being able to recognize at a glance what types your opponent is strong or weak to is invaluable. You wouldn't want to waste time using an attack that has little to no effect, after all.

*it's not something to be quick to discount, in other words*

But yes, battling becomes much more complicated when you and your opponents are all at the peak of your strength. Another reason, perhaps, why one must successfully challenge all of the gyms before being permitted to take on the Elite Four. It tends to weed out those who don't invest sufficient time in training and learning how to battle well.

Yes. After I finished my circuit of Johto gyms, I did all of the Kanto ones against their elite teams. It was certainly interesting to see how they battled when they weren't going easy on the challenger, so to speak.
dreamsofahero: (I come in peace)

I'm giving myself mood whiplash going between this and Sion's log... XD

[personal profile] dreamsofahero 2021-09-21 02:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I believe that if the gym leaders did not to some degree hold back, it would defeat the purpose of allowing a challenger to demonstrate their skills. Something of a test, in a way, rather than a competitive battle.

Though don't sell yourself and your companions short, either. While overconfidence is a good way to lose, so is dwelling on the possibilities of difficult challenges. If you encounter something new and unexpected, your ability to adapt matters far more than simple preparation.

*plans and making contact with the enemy, and all that*

I'll be sure to look forward to it. Though of course that means I can't give you any hints or suggestions for it.

*though he's perhaps a little curious to see whether Byleth will take the time to research and learn as much about the gym's gimmick as possible, or just go in blimd*
dreamsofahero: (you were saying?)

he's gonna feel bad after the fact if Byleth tries to contact him while he's in his funk

[personal profile] dreamsofahero 2021-10-01 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
*Sion feels similarly; while he certainly knows a few people who share some interests, someone with such a similar attitude is rare indeed. Even back in Roland, there were few people indeed who could stay on the same page as him on these sort of things*

You're certainly welcome to. Though of course keep in mind that I can't in good conscious offer too much information on the other gyms, regardless of how much I might know.

[ yachi was sure her heart was going to explode as she watched. it wasn’t like anime— it was the real deal, the stakes were high and the action was, well. real. like a volleyball match, maybe? it had this same sort of intensity, if not more. she thought she was going to feel sick as they took hits, but . . .

she was on edge, and the chikorita in her lap was watching like he would idols. he wants to do that. ]

H-hello! Congrats!! That was— Intense! [ her top worry, of course: ] Are the Pokémon okay?

Your Meowth had a good time doing it . . .

[ it was cute, to say the least. yachi’s cheeks flush and she holds her chikorita a little tighter. he doesn’t seem to mind, enjoys it even, and flips his leaf to release a lovely little aroma. ]

If you don’t mind me asking— do they really like that? Battling? If it’s like wrestling, or . . . Volleyball.

[ some players could get sprains or bruises— it was all part of the sport and activity, right? she still isn’t sure and rubs her fingers around the buds around chikorita’s neck. ]

I get so worried they’ll get hurt, and— when people argue I already get teary-eyed. Is it natural for you?

[ oh, right in the heart. and not in a bad way! yachi seems to make the connection near immediately with her time as a manager. she stayed an entire year in training before she took taking care of the team on her own (and even then, it took some time to adjust her nervousness without her training wheels).

she enjoyed strategy. she had to use her head for that. the rest . . . her smile fades some, but not held with upset. ]

That's true— You're right. [ she nods, just to confirm and strokes her chikorita's head. ] There's a lot of . . . Pressure? From the locals? When they hear you're a trainer, but I'll think on it.

I’ll give it some thought. Thank you, ah—?

[ —she doesn’t think she asked for a name? yachi smiles, but awkwardly. damn, she should’ve done that earlier! ]

[personal profile] chirpier 2021-10-02 01:57 pm (UTC)(link)
[ they're really kind . . . ! it manages to give yachi a boost in her smile. ]

—Right! I'm Yachi, by the way, [ she almost doesn't know what to say before she quickly decides to bow her head. ] thank you.

[Ah.... And so he gets to witness Byleth put their strategies to good use, here in this new world. Dimitri can't help but admire it, feeling a strange mix of nostalgia and experiencing something completely new. It's nice, honestly.]

I am glad to see you have adapted so well, Professor. And you did an excellent job documenting everything, Nyaff.

[Yet as wonderful as this was...]

Have you been getting enough rest, Professor?
nastyboy: (Ghosts are so funny.)

[personal profile] nastyboy 2021-09-21 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
[Enough... Well, that alone would be distantly concerning, even without Byleth's clarification. Dimitri knows how little 'enough' can turn out to really be. He has firsthand experience, in fact.]

[The worry probably is far too obvious on his face; he's no good at hiding such things.]

Of course... Traveling can be an interesting experience, particularly in a place such as this where there is so much that is new, but one's own bed is a hard thing to replace.

Still... Is there anything that I can do to help alleviate it, Professor? Any items, or a companion? Kent has often helped me find a peaceful sleep throughout the night.
nastyboy: (Ghosts are so funny.)

[personal profile] nastyboy 2021-09-24 01:28 pm (UTC)(link)
[Ah... A rebuke - or, well, perhaps not exactly that, but the kind of quick sharp gesture that he felt the Professor occasionally made, especially early on with their class. That business like manner... To the point.]

[Of course... He's being too familiar again. Dimitri tries to remind himself that he has to reign such feelings and habits in. It'd be - rude. Otherwise.]

Of course... That only makes sense. Still, a good night's rest is important as well.

I hope you will find yourself able to sleep a little more soundly, with this gym battle done with. Perhaps the others will come easier, now that you have experienced your first one.

[And it's not as though they're going to be up against the Elite teams just yet. Hopefully that has some effect.]
nastyboy: (Ghosts are so funny.)

[personal profile] nastyboy 2021-10-04 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
It is nothing... I am glad that my advice is not completely useless or unwanted. [The Professor is a smart person. Surely they didn't need to actually be reminded to sleep.] Do you have an idea of what gym you would like to challenge next in Kanto, or are you still considering that?
