[ Surprise surprise, it's time for a network update on Byleth's adventures, courtesy of the one and only Nyaff!! The feed showcases both the lead-up to a battle at the Cerulean gym, showcasing the interior, what crowd has gathered to watch, and Mandagot lounging by Nyaff as stoic as ever, then inevitably shifts to the battlefield as Byleth's very first gym challenge commences! ]
[ It's not all that flashy, with much of Byleth's team sticking to more understated but powerful moves when they're not following their trainer's instruction to evade attacks, but there's no denying this is a battle with a ton of preparation behind it. ]
MY BEST FRIENDS!! LOOK THEM GO! 💖💕😠WORK SO HARD
[ As the battle carries on Nyaff makes sure to engage in the text chat himself by both text and voice, delivering a storm of emoji to the message feed and making sure there is no missing the fact that he's extremely proud of his teammates and having a good time. He even does a little QnA about the team and their training! ]
[ When things are finally finished - a sparkling victory dealt by Levin's impressive application of electricity against Starmie - the camera flips around to showcase a very happy but very weepy Meowth. With text chat abandoned he now defaults to simply meowing his feelings to whoever may be watching. This is thankfully short, however, as Byleth is quick to reunite with their friends in the audience and quickly scoop Nyaff up into their arms for some very important soothing. ]
[ It is at Nyaff's urging that they take the Gear and begin speaking. They look...tired. A lot has happened this month. But they're pleased with the results of this challenge nonetheless. ]
Thank you all for watching, and thank you to those of you who contributed to this. [ They haven't forgotten the encouragements they've gotten through the Network, nor the extremely helpful suggestions from Sion for working with their partner pokemon. The Absol in question is standing beside his trainer now, proud and unafraid. ]
I have high hopes this is only the beginning of a new campaign for us. Please be sure to give Nyaff some thanks for documenting and entertaining, too.

Video; this being backdated conveniently puts it BEFORE his little breakdown...
*he's a bit impressed honestly. Not many newbies think things through that thoroughly!*
oh good! :O
[ Nyaff chimes in with a helpful Mya!! ]
And trial and error, for both me and my companions. I'm impressed myself with the results, to be honest.
tl;dr various factors conspired to compromise his coping mechanisms with predictable results
so i've read ;o;
[ There's a proud twinkle in their eye at Sion's praise - they may not have spoken often with him, but between the help he was able to offer when they were in Olivine and what they've learned through the grapevine, it's no small thing for an Aurora League gym leader to compliment one's battling. Byleth has had more practice at directing others in combat than many, but especially considering they've identified him as something of an Absol expert, they're thrilled to know they've done so well. ]
So it would seem. But that only means that when I do get there, we might be able to enjoy a proper battle.
[ They recall watching Dimitri's match against Jane; it had been one of their driving inspirations, to see two more experienced trainers go toe to toe. ]
someone should start a support group for characters with traumatic backgrounds....
Many don't put in that effort, however. Or don't realize the usefulness in doing so.
*he wonders idly if Byleth will pick up on the brutally effective uses of Absol's Perish Song as he did... but best not to say anything and risk biasing the matter*
Of course. And there's certainly no need to rush, given how long many of us seem to end up staying here.
honestlyyy ;-;
I've noticed brute force seems to be the popular choice, even among the pokemon themselves. [ They sound somewhat amused by the fact; if not for their luck so far in meeting Zhu and Laundry, both of whom seem to very much enjoy making battles more complex, Byleth likely would have needed even more time to prepare. ] It makes preparing more complicated tactics a bit more difficult, but there's nothing wrong with a little challenge. Though, I expect that preparations will only get easier with time and experience.
[ And a sharp eye for more tricksy recruits...they did recently entice a certain water-soaking slug recently, and are already making plans to be more discerning with their searches in the wild. As much more as they can, anyway, when so many of the creatures seem insistent on forcing themselves into training without anyone's consent but their own. But that's just more challenge to enjoy, isn't it? ]
knowing there's others struggling with similar issues would surely do all of them good!
That's not without reason, you know. Most of the gyms, and even the Elite Four, all have particular types they favor. Playing to that advantage is both simple and pragmatic, if nothing else, and I believe those matches do help trainers learn the various strengths and weaknesses of the different types.
However, as you've already demonstrated, those are not the only strategies. And should you want to challenge others who've also completed their own gym circuit, being able to face matches where you might not always have such an easy advantage is quite important indeed.
NODS
As I've read, though, even this approach gets more complex as one gets stronger. Strengthening yourself while slowing the enemy is one thing, but I think I read about some abilities that go beyond that. [ A soft, uncharacteristic chuckle escapes them, more visible than audible. ] I suppose my first challenge leaves me hungry for more.

*it's not something to be quick to discount, in other words*
But yes, battling becomes much more complicated when you and your opponents are all at the peak of your strength. Another reason, perhaps, why one must successfully challenge all of the gyms before being permitted to take on the Elite Four. It tends to weed out those who don't invest sufficient time in training and learning how to battle well.

[ They pause to let him keep going, nodding with interest all the while. They really do need to meet up sometime, it seems. ]
I'm eager to reach such levels; what recordings I've seen of Elite challenges are simply riveting. Being a Gym Leader, have you challenged them yourself?

...Though, I'll make sure I'm as ready as I can be when I return to meet with you in Johto. [ Is there a touch of competitiveness in their voice? Ambition, perhaps? ]
I'm giving myself mood whiplash going between this and Sion's log... XD
Though don't sell yourself and your companions short, either. While overconfidence is a good way to lose, so is dwelling on the possibilities of difficult challenges. If you encounter something new and unexpected, your ability to adapt matters far more than simple preparation.
*plans and making contact with the enemy, and all that*
I'll be sure to look forward to it. Though of course that means I can't give you any hints or suggestions for it.
*though he's perhaps a little curious to see whether Byleth will take the time to research and learn as much about the gym's gimmick as possible, or just go in blimd*
I can imagine lol
[ Perhaps they can bother some other trainers for some lighter-hearted spars after some much-needed rest... ]
As will I. Would you mind staying in touch, meanwhile? I would love to discuss more as I learn.
he's gonna feel bad after the fact if Byleth tries to contact him while he's in his funk
You're certainly welcome to. Though of course keep in mind that I can't in good conscious offer too much information on the other gyms, regardless of how much I might know.

she was on edge, and the chikorita in her lap was watching like he would idols. he wants to do that. ]
H-hello! Congrats!! That was— Intense! [ her top worry, of course: ] Are the Pokémon okay?
no subject
Yes, this is only for sport. [ The camera pans briefly to where Ammo and Levin are being tended by a Chansey on the sideline, the Primeape still utterly failing to stay put and the Galvantula...well, looking like a spider who does not want to move anymore for the time being. They're both lightly scraped and bruised, but there's nothing serious. Off-screen but close to the mic, Byleth's Meowth gives a mya-hmm! of affirmation. ]
I'm glad you found it entertaining; I am...not used to staging battles for performances.

[ it was cute, to say the least. yachi’s cheeks flush and she holds her chikorita a little tighter. he doesn’t seem to mind, enjoys it even, and flips his leaf to release a lovely little aroma. ]
If you don’t mind me asking— do they really like that? Battling? If it’s like wrestling, or . . . Volleyball.
[ some players could get sprains or bruises— it was all part of the sport and activity, right? she still isn’t sure and rubs her fingers around the buds around chikorita’s neck. ]
I get so worried they’ll get hurt, and— when people argue I already get teary-eyed. Is it natural for you?
no subject
[ They pause briefly to think. ] They are able to communicate, moreso than most animals. It's...strange to start, but I suggest you try asking yours directly what they're prepared for. [ Nyaff emphatically nods his agreement! Byleth only gives him easy battles, and that's just how he likes it. ]
Though, ultimately, it's a choice. The Gym Challenge is a tradition of strategy, from what I understand, but as I understand it isn't a requirement by any means. You shouldn't throw yourself into it if you yourself aren't prepared to direct your teammates. [ And that's in no way a condemnation; they've met others like her who, if they had had the choice, they would have given the luxury to keep away from battle. And that is a luxury that this world provides all on its own. ]

she enjoyed strategy. she had to use her head for that. the rest . . . her smile fades some, but not held with upset. ]
That's true— You're right. [ she nods, just to confirm and strokes her chikorita's head. ] There's a lot of . . . Pressure? From the locals? When they hear you're a trainer, but I'll think on it.
no subject
[ Byleth didn't exactly have much intention of waiting around regardless, but that's because they're Byleth 'rush to the front line and mow things down' Eisner. ]
no subject
[ —she doesn’t think she asked for a name? yachi smiles, but awkwardly. damn, she should’ve done that earlier! ]
no subject
[ Not to worry; they aren't especially well-versed in social graces, either. ]
If you need any help, you're welcome to ask anytime.
no subject
—Right! I'm Yachi, by the way, [ she almost doesn't know what to say before she quickly decides to bow her head. ] thank you.

I am glad to see you have adapted so well, Professor. And you did an excellent job documenting everything, Nyaff.
[Yet as wonderful as this was...]
Have you been getting enough rest, Professor?
no subject
[ Nyaff grins, very proud to have Dimitri's approval. ]
[ Byleth is pleased as well, though...they do look tired. And while they don't want to worry him, Byleth also doesn't want to lie to Dimitri, of all people. ]
Enough, yes...though I admit I've been pushing those boundaries. But I'm alright; I'll be sure to rest once we're home.
no subject
[The worry probably is far too obvious on his face; he's no good at hiding such things.]
Of course... Traveling can be an interesting experience, particularly in a place such as this where there is so much that is new, but one's own bed is a hard thing to replace.
Still... Is there anything that I can do to help alleviate it, Professor? Any items, or a companion? Kent has often helped me find a peaceful sleep throughout the night.
no subject
[ Well, most important is to ease his worry as much as they can. They shake their head somewhat sharply in objection to his conclusions. ]
I've been studying, Dimitri, that's all. I wouldn't have been able to do what I did today without taking the time to read, and my teammates couldn't have executed my plan without training.
[ Did the Byleth he knows spend as many late nights in the library, or laboring over maps and paperwork in their room? The curiosity slips into their thoughts completely unbidden, an unwelcome reminder of the gap between them that's still yet to be properly bridged. ]
no subject
[Of course... He's being too familiar again. Dimitri tries to remind himself that he has to reign such feelings and habits in. It'd be - rude. Otherwise.]
Of course... That only makes sense. Still, a good night's rest is important as well.
I hope you will find yourself able to sleep a little more soundly, with this gym battle done with. Perhaps the others will come easier, now that you have experienced your first one.
[And it's not as though they're going to be up against the Elite teams just yet. Hopefully that has some effect.]
no subject
[ ...Well, they'll do their best to try and remedy it despite their confusion. ]
I plan for it, yes. Now that I know what to expect, the rest should require much less preparation. You are right, though; good rest is an important part of that preparation, too.
[ And these battles certainly pale in comparison to what they normally prepare for, be it at the Academy or otherwise. Byleth is very thankful to be sure of that now. ]
Thank you, Dimitri.
