a new rival appears
Who: Kaiba, Kingyoku the Goomy, and you!
Where: Obsidian Fieldlands, Cobalt Coastlands, Alabaster Icelands, Hisui
When: July!
Summary: One of the stranded people in Hisui wasn't in the present with the rest of you. Someone is completely lost and angry at the world. Help him or snap back?
Rating: E10+ for minor instances of anger and small injuries.
Log:
wiggle wiggle:
Among the temporally displaced newcomers to Hisui is a tall teenager with messy brown hair and sharp blue eyes, one most of the others won't recognize. He's growled at the guild members, reluctantly taken their deal for clothing and shelter, and ended up walking away with new blue and grey clothing in an ancient style and a strange red and brown ball in his hand.
Once he finds a relatively calm spot on the river, he releases the hatch on the ball. His eyes widen when some sort of purple slimeball pops out. It makes an odd squishy noise at him, twitches its antenna in the air....and rushes straight at the river to play in the shallows. This thing seems to really like the water. It wobbles and shivers like some kind of dessert jelly....
"Great. So I'm...in a new world some hundred years behind mine, where almost everything's trying to kill me, with this little jelly for protection?"
What a day. Kaiba peels off his new sandals and rolls up his pant legs, opting to sit close to the small creature and watch it play. It splashes about, all smiles: contrasting his trainer, all frowns.
working hard for the money:
Kaiba eventually picks up on the basics of Pokémon training through observation (and maybe a few questions). His little friend Kingyoku knows a few attack and defense abilities that he can use if the two get in trouble, and together they're meant to explore the wild and gather supplies. Fine, he can do that.
They don't stray far from camp (how he hates sleeping next to all these strangers), but they do search high and low for berries and leeks to earn their keep. Kingyoku's especially good at finding leeks, doing a little wobbly dance whenever he finds one. It's...almost cute.
Berries are a different story. Kingyoku isn't really solid enough to ram into trees to knock them down, so that leaves Kaiba to attempt to climb them. He hops onto a tree, hauls himself up the branches....
...and is promptly knocked down by a falling larva-like creature wrapped in leaves. Whoops. Kingyoku bubbles angrily, zooming over to try to scare it off! He hisses and spits a hot stream of bubbles. Kaiba looks up bleary-eyed as he hauls himself to his feet. What the heck?
The little goober is protecting him? He feels a strange surge of emotion in his chest and hops up to his feet, just as the weird leaf-bug surges forward for a bite.
"Attack!"
Kingyoku can't dodge in time, but it's so gelatinous that the bite doesn't seem to have much of an effect. And it's in perfect range for Kingyoku to spit some kind of hot breath, sending the thing flying backward.
Kaiba spares a little smile. Maybe they'll survive after all...is what he thinks until another one of these leaf-cloaked larvae drops out of the next tree, also gearing up to attack.
Help?
night skies
After dusk, when it's too dark to safely travel and unnerving ghostly sounds fill the area, Kaiba reluctantly retreats to the beach where everyone's tents are set up. He seems to hesitate around the outskirts of camp, looking at the gathered people socializing with a frown.
How are so many of them calm about this? Taken from their lives, partnering with strange beings...none of it's normal. He's no delicate flower, he can survive, but the idiot who trapped them here needs to get her mistake fixed ASAP.
He plants himself on a log and frowns up at the sky. The stars are surprisingly bright without the light pollution of the modern world, but...! No. No positives.
Kingyoku bumps into his leg then. Ugh, he's going to get his new clothes all slimy. Kaiba oh-so-carefully picks him up and sets him on the log beside him, but his hands are a mess. He wipes them on what remains of his old turtleneck, which he's decided to keep as a rag.
He feeds Kingyoku a berry absently, and takes a deep breath...and that calms him enough to dare to try to speak to one of the more experienced people passing by.
"...How confident are you that they'll send us back?"
--((prompts for weeks 3-4))--
never quite clean (fieldlands)
The trouble with having a Goomy for a partner is that they're very slimy. And very affectionate. That means his only fully intact outfit is very often slimy.
Kaiba's once again at the river by the dam at dusk, wearing his slightly ripped black leather pants while he washes his clothes *again*. He has a whole setup for laundry with buckets, water heated by a small fire (thanks to the little Ponyta curled up on the sands nearby), and he's rubbing his hands raw with scrubbing. Goomy slime really is stubborn.
Meanwhile the guilty Pokémon plays in the shallows in front of his Trainer, doing his usual dance.
"I'd probably kill for a washing machine right now."
highest heights (coastlands)
Once Kingyoku and his new fiery pony Zephyra are both a little stronger, it's finally time to train against tougher Pokémon! He takes them to the Cobalt Coastlands for some searching, training, and gathering. And an incredible view of the ocean wouldn't hurt, really.
He finds such a view on the cliffside to the left, and there's a relatively easy walking path up there. They have to battle their way through a few Pokémon, but once they make it to the top...it's an incredible view of the beach, with a few hidden lakes and lagoons on either side.
Time to let Kingyoku and Zephyra see the view! He lets his two Pokémon out of their balls and takes a seat on the cliff beside them. A little risky? Of course. But the view can't be beat.
He just...gently pulls King back from the ledge before he can attract a nearby bird. "Easy. I don't know how an aerial battle's gonna work when you can't fly."
King seems to pout. He's a dragon, he wants to fly! But that's not gonna happen, buddy.
hot spring field trip (end of month, icelands)
Kaiba is absolutely miserable once they arrive in the Icelands. He has a team of three by now, but his gentle little moth isn't really doing well in the cold. It's Zephyra who takes the lead here, the pony's gentle heat very welcome in this environment. He walks beside her on his travels, and her flames seem to scare off most of the smaller Ice-types. That's a relief.
He's looking for somewhere to stop and double check his supplies when he finds an unexpectedly peaceful place...a hot spring. Zephyra accidentally kicks a rock and the Pokémon in the spring turn to him...but they collectively shrug and turn back. Two that resemble muscular men with reptilian faces approach...but all they do is flex, laugh...and are they waving them over?
"...do we join them?" Kaiba asks, frozen in place. What a bizarre situation.

And he's just been thrown straight back to the past.
Sigh. "If the machine parts are out there, it can be fixed. I just don't know if I trust that woman to do it."
no subject
Even if he isn't super fond of Kaiba, he can't deny the man is a genius.
"I just wonder... once it's fixed, will it return us home or back to the present?"
He's hoping for the latter. He isn't ready to go home yet.
... What a strange concept.
"In the meantime, welcome to the Pokémon World, I guess."
no subject
He looks down at Kingyoku, who makes a confused noise. He sighs and passes him a leaf. He seems to like eating those too.
"I'd obviously prefer to go home...but you have a team of these creatures you're looking after. How many were abandoned back there?"
There might be a bit of a Crisis going on in this modern world, oops.
no subject
Even if it's still quite the shock to him.
Marik sighs and does the stereotypical delinquent crouch close to the river edge. "Six of them. I know most of them can fend for themselves but... my Yamask is... timid."
He doesn't want to outright tell Kaiba he's worried. That would give him power of him rather than the other way around. But he and Chenzira have formed a special bond. His partner is missing and he needs to find him.
no subject
"That Cara Liss needs to stop messing around and let us fix it, then," he growls. "There's no reason to waste all our time like this."
no subject
"... It's fine."
It's not, obviously, but hearing apologies is still sort of weird to him, especially with Kaiba. His Gastly is sticking close by his side.
"There really isn't. Why she even messed with it in the first place is beyond me. Fool..."
Marik sighs and decides to sit down properly, crossing his legs.
"... I don't know if you want me to fill you in on everything I know about the... future of this place. Seems kind of moot point at the moment. Suppose it couldn't hurt and might pass the time."
no subject
And he needs a distraction, so he agrees. "It's worth knowing. Unless we manage to change the future so radically while we're here that none of it applies. So...what kind of place is it?"
no subject
"Gods, I hope not. Normally, this place is... honestly, it's really nice. I thought it might have been one of your crazy inventions at first. It's too similar to Capsule Monsters to be a coincidence."
He pauses to shift, resting his hands on his ankles and leaning over slightly.
"But you're here... so it's definitely not something you made. It still could be a simulation. It feels real though... No one's sure about how or why we're pulled here. There's people from every world and universe. There's a few from ours although they're from much farther in the future."
He looks over to the Gastly. He still needs to come up with a name for the poor thing. That can be done after though.
"But how this place works is you collect monsters. You can catch, train, battle, trade, and even breed them. Not all Pokémon want to battle though. My... my starter isn't one for battling."
Chenzira. He really hopes he's okay...
"You can compete in gyms though. I'm sure that will be right up your alley. I don't know all that much about it as I'm... sort of traveling and experiencing just existing.
"They eat berries, by the way. You can feed them human food but it's a lot like if you spoil your pet with unhealthy food."
He takes a deep breath and slowly exhales.
"Last thing I can think of is..." Marik pulls out his pokegear. "This is your Pokegear. Usually it's connected to a network with various websites and ways to contact people but with our current situation, it's a paperweight."
no subject
He squints at the Gear and shakes his head. "I didn't get one. My deck and locket are safe, but everything else was destroyed. I've got an empty satchel and a few tasks on a job board to start filling it with."
If the legal system existed here he'd definitely have sued, despite being flat broke. Those clothes were expensive.
"And...it was fine, traveling on the road like that? People didn't bother you?"
no subject
So he has his deck. Good to know. Marik doesn't say anything on the matter though.
"People occasionally run up to challenge you but other than that, I've been left alone. Traveling on the road isn't bad at all. It's helping me get a bit in shape honestly," he chuckles to himself. "Most people here are friendly and willing to help though. It's been... refreshing."
The locket. He actually doesn't know what it has in it but... hm. He has a little brother, doesn't he?
"By the way," he looks up through his messy bangs, "time stops back in our world while we're here supposedly. When we return, we won't remember any of this."
no subject
"I don't want to think about what would happen to Mokuba without me if that wasn't the case." He ruffles the back of his hair and looks up at a passing cloud. "But if it's all erased...then what's the point of anything?"
no subject
Marik sighs, shoulders slumping a bit. He's lowered his guard because this is the one issue he feels no one should be dishonest about.
"Yeah. I asked that too. I try... not to think about it. Just try to enjoy the time I have here. Otherwise you start having existential thoughts. ... I've had enough of those for a life time."
no subject
"But that's cruel to the Pokémon. We make these beings dependent on us, and then...just leave them?"
no subject
The blonde looks down at his hands, still clasped around his ankles. He's not sure why he's bringing it up but... maybe it's because he's just needed someone to talk to. To get it off his chest.
"I can't stop worrying about Chenzira. He's so dependent on me... I... What if he's all by himself somewhere?"
His grip tightens.
"... I even made a wish at the festival.. that I'd always be there for him... and now I'm gods-know-when and he's nowhere to be seen..."
no subject
"King---" Kaiba reaches to reel him in, but he's still focused on what Marik is saying. He takes a slow breath, trying to think of something to say that isn't so...bleak.
"If that world really is as friendly as you say...someone could've found him and taken him in. Believe it or not, even I wouldn't kick a lost puppy."
no subject
"I hope that's the case... He's really reclusive, even when he's with me."
Who knew he'd come to care for something so much. He'd never say it outloud but he would kill to protect his Yamask.
Marik looks up to Kaiba with a half-hearted smirk.
"I'm glad to hear you're a decent enough person to not want to kick a puppy though. Good to know."
He's teasing, of course. As he continues to give the Goomy pats.
no subject
Kaiba watches with a half-smile. "An annoying person who acts like a dog is a different story. But...from what I'm told, if we both go back to that world I won't be able to get far in a search. Doesn't mean I won't try."
no subject
Marik manages to finally give Kaiba a genuine smile. Seems even after all their bluster, they're both still just teens in a strange world.
"... Thanks. I... I appreciate it."
He pauses and looks back down to King.
"I suppose I should... apologize as well. For the trouble I caused during your tournament."
He really didn't want to but since the two are having a bit of a heart-to-heart, it seems like the right time. If he's trying to better himself, apologizing for your mistakes is one of the first steps, right?
no subject
But the person in front of him wasn't that Marik, or so he believed. They were both in a strange world, separate from their past sins...and they weren't tied to their pasts in this world. By chance, they were together against an extremely hostile environment.
And so he looks at King, nods, then back up at Marik.
"I've done a lot that wasn't on the light side off the law myself. But I don't see why we can't have a truce and work on surviving this now."
He offers his hand.
no subject
Marik looks up to meet Kaiba's gaze, a bit taken aback by the other boy's calm response. He might not have forgiven him audibly but he's giving him a second chance, and that's all the Egyptian could ask for.
And so he takes a hold of Kaiba's hand and gives it a firm shake, managing a smile.
"Thank you, Kaiba. I... I do appreciate it. I promise I won't do you wrong."
The nicer Marik way of saying 'I'm not going to backstab you' perhaps.
no subject
A faint smile briefly crosses his face. He's reasonably sure he's not making a mistake here? He takes a breath, finishes the firm shake, then sits back. He's noticeably more relaxed as King slides up onto the bank beside him, cooing happily.
"I'd ask if you want to gather berries with me, but I don't think your ghost is likely to be much better at slamming into trees than King. Maybe leeks."
no subject
Which is true. Kaiba is incredibly sharp and intelligent for someone his age. Someone who can provide a different perspective on things.
And over the past few months, the blonde has gotten by without his own vast funds pretty decently so it isn't a huge deal to him. Kaiba though. Kaiba is fresh from being transported here so he understands the shock. ... It must be even worse though given they're in the past.
That's hard to wrap his head around. Let's just forget that.
He chuckles at the thought of King trying to headbutt trees.
"Yeah. Probably not. He can float up to them but... doesn't really have the hands to pick them. I guess leeks are our best bet."
Marik pauses as he looks over at his Gastly.
"He needs a name. I've been so preoccupied, I haven't thought of one..."
no subject
His attention then turns to Marik's dilemma.
"How did you pick names for your others?"
no subject
... Hmm. Perhaps a bit unoriginal but it fits.
"Usi," he says. "It means smoke."
The Gastly seems pleased. Marik smiles and stands up, giving himself a bit to stretch before addressing Kaiba.
"Well, shall we then?"
no subject
King happily slides out of the water and coos up at Kaiba, and he reaches down to pet him one more time. Good little goo dragon.
"They grow more closer to the river, so we shouldn't have to go far. There's one," he points, listening for Pokémon sounds before they trek forward. Hopefully they won't be ambushed this time...
...he does hear a sound, but it seems to be one of the small beavers common around the dam. They're mostly harmless.
