Things Keldor is not doing yet: going on Careless Cara Liss' magical mystery tour back into the past. A shame he's not yet, really. Time travel is a doable thing [very rarely done, but doable] in Eternia, meaning he'd be one of the few who will take it well and might actually enjoy it.

Really, it'll be cool to experience when he does get snagged up, but, well... We've got other things we want to do first. Backdate-y things.



Things Keldor is currently doing before Hilarity Hits: trying to keep his recently-acquired Growlithe egg warm. This would be a whole lot easier if he had his magic, but he doesn't, which means making do. He's currently on Route 30, somewhere between Cherrygrove and Violet, and has got a fire going at the moment, where he has a bunch of stones encircling it to heat up. Once they're hot enough, they're placed around the egg using tongs [because it's that or third degree burns when you're magicless]. Gingko, watching all this, seems to have remembered that he's a bird, and is doing his best to help, but he's only half the size of the egg and can only warm so much of it up. Momiji the Sentret and Ganpi the Scatterbug are doing their best to assist, but those stones are hot, and, well. Bug pokemon and fire. You know how well the two go together, but A for effort on Ganpi's part.

Judging from the looks of things, and the fact he's been at this for a few days, it shouldn't be much longer before the egg hatches and everyone can say "hello".

It reminds me of when my eggs hatched. They cuddled right up to me and the rest of the team.

Are they all of them bred by you?

Right now I only have one Pokemon from one of my eggs, this cutie here.

[He indicates Kiryu.]

But I've bought some eggs from others.

All the same kind or different?

[He's not yet aware that people can and do specialise.]

I bought one Eevee egg. I also bought a Rookidee and a Ralts. Right now I'm waiting on the Eevee egg to hatch, as well as a second Eevee egg I got from two of mine.

So you purchase as well as breed?

[He wonders.]

Should I expect to find an egg greeting me one morning sometime in the future?

Yeah. The Eevee I purchased has some possible moves that my others don't have, so it seemed like a good idea.

[He chuckles.]

If any of your Pokemon can breed with each other, then oh yeah.

Wait. I can? They will?

[And he was only asking rhetorically!]

How will I know if they can?

[As in, how will he know which two pokemon are most likely to produce a "Surprise! Egg!" one day?]

They need to be in the same egg group. There should be a list of the groups somewhere. I'm sure I read it, although I didn't need it since I'm just planning on Eevees. And the babies always take after the mom.

[Wow there's just no end to pokemon complexity, is there?]

[crystalmaster]

Yeah, like Eevees are in the Field egg group. The other groups are things like Flying, Water, Grass ... all the different categories the Pokemon fall under.

So. If Gingko here were to find himself with a female grass type, I will find myself waking up to an egg?

[Might want to make sure he has lots of type diversity to avoid surprise eggs. Just in case.]

If they like each other enough. Sometimes they won't have any interest in that. There's a lot of factors involved in this.

[Better, then, to have pokemon that don't quite like—not hate, exactly—each other. Friendly. But not too friendly.]

Quite a lot. I fear it would take some time to memorise it all.

[Memorising a lot of info isn't hard, truth be told. But nearly all of it involved either magic or combat training. Not animal husbandry.]

Yeah, I found it pretty overwhelming when I first decided to try this path. I wanna specialize in Eevees, but I have to be careful I don't end up with some surprise eggs from others. I'm sure I will sometime, though.

Perhaps, then, it was best that I went with "trainer". Raising an animal—or a number of them—cannot be easy, if breeding will be involved in their keeping.

It's an adventure. Of course, you might wind up with some eggs anyway, if your Pokemon feel like it.

Whether they do or not, I now know that is something to expect.

Yeah, better to be forewarned. Maybe someday I'll wake up to my kitties making eggs.

[He's about to say something to that, but it's about this time that the new Growlithe is starting to realise that no one's paying attention to it, and is trying to get someone to notice it. By pawing at feet.

Keldor crouches down.]

Do not fret, young one. I have not forgotten you.

[Radley smiles at the cute puppy. His Pokemon want to play with it! Evie runs around dancing and warbling at her hopefully new friend.]

[Satisfied that it's not being ignored, the Growlithe accepts the invitation and engages in some play, much to Keldor's amusement.]

[Radley chuckles.]

My Pokemon love to play, especially Evie and Isla. Evie wants to make friends with everyone.

[Oh dear. He forgot to name it in all the excitement.

He pulls out his gear.

Sure enough, it's been waiting patiently for Keldor to input a name. He does.]

Congratulations, [it says.] Your Growlithe is now named Fukiran.
