Summary: The Voltron Crew plans a little party

[Okay, cue the spy music. Stage one of the plan? Convince Lance they have a mission to go on. Try to keep the story straight. (Keeping the mission straight is not a guarantee.) Stage two, set up party ahead of the oncoming group, form sugary ambush. Except Hunk has to use whatever materials he can scrounge from supplies, around, or from available pokemon.]

[Final stage. Surprise! Keep food away from surprised Lance so he doesn't destroy the desert table through flailing- that is if the surprise is successful. Actually Hunk'll just put Dragon Roll the Gyarados out so he's hiding the whole thing. And will be between any Paladin-induced mishaps.]

[In short there's a party on the beach, with the decorations being mostly local flowers grown with the help of some pokemon teamwork, roasted and steamed veggies with herbs, sweet fruit-based dishes, mochi, and rice-milk ice cream.]

[Time to eat up and enjoy Lance's birthday!]

[Radley doesn't know Lance, but he knows several of Lance's friends, so he's showed up to participate. Really, they've done a great job even though they don't have everything they would in modern times. Radley is very impressed.]

[This whole getting sent back to the olden days thing had not only gotten, well, old, but also has the worst timing. Lance had modern plans for his birthday, as per usual being the giant flashy peacock that he is, but they have been ruined. RUINED! There's nothing here like a spa and a masseuse and a gourmet bakery here to even come close to what Lance would enjoy.

So he's miserable. And looks so, until Dragon Roll shuffles out of the way and reveals the unmistakable makings of a party. Now he looks shocked, eyes wide, and points at himself.]

Is this... for me?

Thanks! At least we've gotten really used to scrounging things together from scratch. Remind me to tell you about the time that I made cookies that saved our ship.

The more hands around, the merrier. [Hunk's just glad to have people here. New friends are new friends and he is honestly quick to get irritated when things are all on him. Brings out the very worst in a generally soft-hearted man.]

Of course, man! You're getting old. Do you think I'd let you forget that? Come here! Give me a birthday hug.

[He wants Lance to be restrained when people start singing to him so he's helpless to do anything but accept the song. You know, as good friends do. He runs up to give him those big Hunk squashings.]

I guess we've been forced to learn some new talents. Wow, those must have been some cookies.

So, what can I do to help?

Oh they were! Just not for eating. Sometimes you hit some roadblocks while experimenting with new ingredients.

[The context would just make that whole story even stranger. So instead he just goes and retrieves a wooden tray of mochi brought to him by Jubilee, his little hooded overcast Cherrim, balancing it on it's head.]

Help me arrange these! There's no milk and the Miltank didn't come with us, but I hope people don't mind.

[He did his best. And luckily Hisui has enough ingredients to do some great traditional Japanese food, even if it's not all that 'birthday'y in a western sense.]

[That must be the strangest roadblock ever. But he snaps to attention at the task.]

Sure! They look delicious. Just tell me where you want them.

[He moves to take the tray to the table.]

No, it's for a Snorlax that needs placating. [A cheerful roll of her eyes before she gives him her gifts: a bottle which he'll find contains a dark green substance not at all unlike a clay mask, and a simple necklace strung with shells.] Of course it's for you. Happy birthday, Lance.

[Even after being married for all this time, Pidge is rarely one to initiate the PDA. But in this particular instance, seeing the way Lance reacts to the modest party set up in front of him, she'll make an exception. While he's still standing there in shock she sidles up next to him, tugs him down so he's a little closer to her level, and leans up to plant a quick kiss on his cheek. She's pretty sure no one will blanch at the sight, after all. And once that's done she just rolls back onto her heels with a cheeky grin on her face.]

Happy birthday, Lancelot. It's no spa day, but we did what we could.

[ sandalphon wasn't the most festive, and he also didn't know many of those here-- save allura. but he did come across the makeshift party, and it did raise some eyebrows out of the angel. ]

Well, it is done with what we have available... [ he can't rag on it too much. he would've been scrambling too had he held his boyfriend's party in this condition. ]

I wonder who's celebrating another year.

It's been a great exercise in using basic ingredients. Great, and also incredibly frustrating. I'm going to set this table on fire when the party's over. Luckily Lance would probably like that. Over here next to this.

[He puts out the ice cream over a setting of ice that Dragon Roll made to keep it cool, gesturing with a nod to where he wants the mochi.]

[He's a good boy most of the time, but even he's prone to frustration.]

Oh! It's my buddy Lance. He's over there-

[Hunk points him out.] We were friends back home. He's been here a lot longer than me, though. [Enough so that Hunk barely even recognizes him. But he's getting used to it.]

[Radley laughs, although he's not sure it's a joke. He sets the tray down at the desired spot.]

Yeah, I don't blame you. The longer we're here, the more stir-crazy I get. It's not like building my town back home.

[Plus there's all the Pokemon to worry about back in Johto.]

[ sandalphon leans over to spot the birthday boy. he gives a nod of understanding, but the comment got his attention. ]

... How long has he been here in Hisui? [ he can't help but silently poke at the fact. he's aware that he means "in johto", but the opportunity was too great not to pay attention to. ]

[Luckily it's 70% joke. Hunk's not a particularly violent dude. 30% has the modifier that this table isn't one in a house, it's one that's largely expendable, and he's been at this all day.]

Like you're building the town in Johto or you built one back in your home universe.

[Either way, Hunk sounds like he admires that. Making the world better, creating homes and better lives, really is a worthwhile goal. Were it a game there'd be some approving text on the screen with some affirming arrow.]

[Unfortunately Hunk doesn't know, yet, that he's being picked on a little. He just assumes that the guy is new and doesn't know what he means. He just assumes the best first.]

In Johto. I'm actually the new guy when it comes to anywhere in this world. From what I hear, though, I wouldn't be surprised if time travel shenanigans have happened before. A lot goes down here.

I'm Hunk, by the way.

[He offers a hand to shake in Sandalphon's direction. If he takes it, he'll get a big vigorous shake.]

Well, in Johto I'm not really building a town ... yet. Although I do have plans for improving the transportation system. But back home, yeah, most of the good things in that town were because of me and my friends.

[He still worries how much of the bad they may have contributed to as well, but he hopes that overall their presence was good. He will likely always be haunted by how many of the miners died thanks to Malcolm, however.]

That's it? You let me leave the tent looking like this, unwashed and uncombed, and all I get is a cheap kiss?

[He complains as he reaches around her to playfully squeeze one of her buttcheeks. Pidge is so gonna pay for this later.]

You're my wife. You're supposed to yell at me to at least do something with my curls before stepping out into a surprise party!

[He's touched, he truly is. This is just Lance's way of not sobbing from feeling loved in public.]

[Is he crying? No, no. The beach is just extra dusty today and some of it is in his eyes. Yes, that's absolutely why his eyes are watering over the little bottle that just might save his life tonight. The necklace is just as amazing for fashion reasons, but Allura always seems to know exactly what to appease Lance with.]

I didn't expect anything!

[It's true, what with being sent back in time and all. Maybe he expected a clap on the shoulder and a few jokes about getting up there in age, but a whole party? No way.]

[It's not that he thought they forgot. It's more like he kind of hoped they forgot until he would properly presentable for public viewing, but now here Lance is, cowlick uncombed, no deodorant, only washed up once for today in front of a bunch of friends, family, and strangers.

A birthday nightmare that he's still touched about.]

But my hair! Why didn't you tell me so I could comb my hair?!

[Ignore the whining that comes out muffled through the Hunk squashing. Lance is just being his dramatic old self.]

[Sir, sir, please. He can't breathe. How is Lance supposed to tell you that he's embarrassed because he looks a hot mess at his surprise party if you keep squeezing him?]

[She yelps and automatically swats at his hand but she's still grinning up at him, a mischievous glint in her eyes as if she's gotten away with murder.]

Obviously I'm your husband today, because for the thousandth time, I think you look fine. But hey, I did tell you to wash your face.

[While she's swatting at his hand, he's coming around with his other hand to ruffle her hair so it looks just as messy as his.

Actually, no, it looks like her normal rat's nest. Damn. There goes that plan.]

Yeah, but did you tell me to moisturize? To find something to use as sunscreen? To make sure I slept well so I didn't look at wreck at my own party you neglected to warn me about?

[It's alright, Lance; there's a good reason she's kept her hair in a bun all month, these circumstances do NOTHING for hair of her length and texture. At least they have heated showers now, which is why she doesn't mind bringing him in for a hug.]

Oh come, Lance, you should know us better by now.

[Especially Hunk. Seriously, do you think Hunk, who is able to make pizza rolls and burritos in space, would miss out on a chance to throw a party?]
