Fun With Hermits (Mission Log)
Who: Riku, Astrid, Radley
Where: Firespit Island
When: During the event
Summary: An unlikely band of trainers is tasked with retrieving a machine part. Problem is, a kooky old hermit named Kermit has it, and now they must devise a way to get it back. ...Preferably without getting their butts kicked.
Rating: Probably K+? I can't see it getting that dark.
Log:
Given the severity of the mission, Riku leaped at the chance to do something meaningful here. As unique as it's been to see a new time and all the history it brings, he misses his team. He misses indoor plumbing. He misses technology. Though, to his credit, at least he's showered off before, shaved any embarrassing five o' clock shadow, and polished himself enough to look presentable. Impressions matter in situations like this, where they're dealing with an unpredictable variable.
As they approach the hermit's home, he runs a hand through his hair and sighs. "So... How do we wanna do this?"
He'd rather like to avoid picking a fight, but knowing the kinda personalities he's working with make strategizing a whole lot easier.

"Let's try everything we can to avoid battling him," he says. "We might be able to win him over by smooth-talking him. I was thinking of playing up the angle of agreeing with him that the machine part is a sign from the gods, and they chose him to keep it safe for us until we could get it."
Hey, for all he knows, maybe that's true. He hopes it won't be considered blaspheme.
"How do we convince him that the gods are interested in what happens to us, though?"

"If all else fails, I'll have Abaddon set fire to something. I bet we can outrun some old hermit."
Abaddon, it seems, is a Growlithe who is much too cheerful for her name. She's trotting happily alongside the group.

It'd also make them look awful and potentially screw over relations in what little time they've got left in this world.
Riku's Zoroark creeps close by, sniffing the air and swooshing his tail. Spooky.
"But hmm... Here's a thought. We got our Pokégears, right? Even if the network's failed, it's still a piece of futuristic tech. The way I see it, we can use that to make it seem like we were sent by the gods."

He perks up at Riku's suggestion. "Hey, that's great! Yeah, let's do that. Mine is charged, so it shows the time and I can bring up my saved pictures and videos." He had clung to those lately.
They were getting close now. The guy was sitting on his porch, humming and holding the machine part proudly. Lily stopped walking and watched him.
"Okay," Radley says. "Let's do this."
He feels very nervous. It has to work! It has to....

To her credit she puts a stop to that kind of talk when they get within earshot, and she sticks her hands in her pockets in an attempt to look non-threatening. The glowing, mismatched eyes and dramatic face scar make any efforts to that effect a bit less effective.
"Hey, we need that machine piece, it's really important. ...Please." See? She can use the magic word and everything!

The Magmar beside him rumbles and swishes its tail. "This here's a gift from on high! The Almighty Sinnoh sent it as a sign, I tell ya!"
Riku covers his face with his palm. Deep breaths. Okay. How're they gonna do this...
"Well, here's the thing. That's not the only 'sign' sent by your god. In fact, we're... messengers from the heavens."
There. It's a start, right?

"Yes, that's right," Radley smiled. "The gods chose you to watch over this important part that we need." He took out his PokeGear. "This is something they gave all of us." He turned it on and showed the time and opened the Pictures and Videos applications, playing a video for him to see.
The guy stared, fascinated. "The pictures are all moving in there!"
"Isn't it special?" Radley swallowed the lump in his throat at seeing his beloved Pokemon. "The gods bequeathed such marvels to us to help us in our quests across their lands. But we also need the part you're holding for us in order to do that."
Kermit pondered this, studying it all out. It really seemed to make sense.... How else would they have incredible things like that?
"Lemme see it again," he said.
Radley played the video again.
"... The gods really chose you people?" Kermit mused. "Why you?"
"We really don't know," Radley said honestly. Why had they been brought to the Pokemon world? "But we need to get back to what they wanted us to do, and we can't do that without your help. Will you please give us that part?"
no subject
"Yeah, 's just as much of a mystery to us. But I mean, who are we to question it?" It's the kind of lie she told for survival back during the old war, so it comes easily. "It's all bigger than us."
The reassurance seems almost unnecessary, though, because Kermit holds the part out to Radley. "If I find more of these thingamajiggers I can just hold them 'til you come back, right? Messengers of th' almighty Sinnoh would know if I find them them, yes?" After all, they somehow knew this time.

So, fine. Riku runs a hand through his hair and nods. "Sure thing. Word travels fast in the, uh... celestial plane. Just keep your faith in the Almighty Sinnoh strong. Believe in its might. ...and maybe have a sandwich on hand. The Almighty Sinnoh's pretty big on those."
Riku speaks from experience. In fact, he even contemplates showing a picture of Arceus eating a sandwich from years ago, but... Would that hinder his belief? Do these guys even know what Arceus is? Is the Almighty Sinnoh even the same Pokemon?
Eh. I'll hope his word is good enough for the old timer.

"Sandwiches, huh?" Kermit grunts. "Yeah, I'll be sure I always have 'em!"
Radley smiles as he accepts the part. "Thank you so much. You'll definitely be remembered for this!"
He waves Goodbye and starts to head off, Lily trotting at his side. Of course, he isn't walking fast so the others can catch up. He is elated, though. If this is the final part, they're almost home!
