[Asriel isn't the one who notices the approaching light. His Pokemon, and the affectionate Rockruff, do - his own team circles closer around Asriel protectively, while the Rockruff backs up and shivers, only calming when it sees that there's a person behind that fire.

The voice is the thing that gets Asriel to react, and by then Anders is too close for him to back up or flee. He simply looks up at the man with teary eyes for a moment before vehemently shaking his head.]
