The hills are alive with the sound of… sneezing?

It’s almost a week into January, and trainers may have started to get nervous about the lack of Snorunts. Whether you’re excited to see them, or just want the metaphorical bomb to drop and be over with - the wait is finally done. Snorunts have started to make their way into town.

But instead of fortunes, what they have to give right now is coughs, bleary eyes, and sad little flops sideways into the snow. They’re not alone, either: every once in a while you’ll see an equally sick Glalie or Froslass. (Be careful - a sneezing Glalie is basically a wrecking ball waiting to happen, prone to launching itself backward! And if you’ve been struck by an odd spurt of bad luck, maybe you’ll be right in the way when it does…)

In cities across Johto and Kanto, and in field camps in between, Nurse Joys are scrambling to treat the miserable Ice Pokemon. But they’re direly in need of more helping hands. Will you pitch in?

[Radley listens, blinks, and smiles.]

Hey, makes sense to me! It probably is something like that.

[Evie chirps. She's not fully sure what was just said, but Radley likes it, so she's sure it makes sense too!]

[Vivian instead huffs, not sure what was said but absolutely unhappy that she doesn't know what's going on. She should always know what's going on, JoJo. Jotaro doesn't explain himself to the Pokemon but he does pat Vivian on the head to placate her.]

Probably. But who knows. Maybe I'll talk to Professor Elm once this debacle is over. He is the Pokemon expert on eggs and breeding. It'd be something to do.

Sounds like a good idea. Have you ever talked to him before? I was thinking he was usually pretty scarce.

Never. Even though I've been around for a few months now helping out with the new Petal Gym in New Bark. Not that I'm surprised... Research can be busy work. You can either be stuck in your research or off presenting your research.

[crystalmaster]

Yeah, I guess that makes sense. I've tried to talk to him before and I haven't had any luck either.

What's the gym like? I'm kinda surprised there's a gym there now, especially if they still don't have a Pokemon Center. Or has that changed now too? I haven't got out to New Bark in a while.

You'll see when we get there. [Jotaro's at first content to leave it at that. However, Vivian isn't, knowing perfectly well her trainer is being rude. She gives a small, incessant 'nyehhhh' at Jotaro. Jotaro rolls his eyes but after a moment he continues.]

There's no Pokemon Center but it's a big gym. Emporio built it with the intention of training newcomers how to survive the various terrains in Johto and Kanto. It's a survival course so the gym actually is more built into the forest that stretches between New Bark Town and Route 29.

That's a pretty cool idea. I would have welcomed something like that when I first got here.

["Eevee!" says Evie. It sounds fun!]

Yeah... If you look to the North-East, you may see it amidst the trees.

It's useful, especially when a lot of people don't have camping experience when they arrive here. Emporio tends to think about these things. He's a smart kid.

[Jotaro smiles softly at the thought of the kid but says nothing more on his own. He simply keeps driving.]

[Radley and Evie both look to try to see.]

Yeah, he must be. I’m surprised nobody came up with that idea before, but I’m glad he did.

Well, it's not exactly an easy idea to execute. I've been helping him set it up. It's five survival courses all in one gym... but ah, me saying stuff about it won't do it justice. You'll see when we get there.

Wow. So does each course deal with a specific theme, or are they the same thing, but with different levels of experience, like Beginner and Intermediate?

[phdepression]

Specific themes. One's winter-themed, one's built to test how you cope with storms, one is how to survive while you're travelling ocean routes, one's for mountain and caves and the last is desert survival. All the wild terrain you encounter around the regions. He's even built a specific theme built around each course, so you could theoretically do the gym challenge five times.

That's really cool. Maybe we'll have to take it sometime.

["Eevee-vee!" Evie squeals.]

Probably a good thing to do at some point. The gym should open soon.

You any good at battles?

[crystalmaster]

We’ll be watching for it.

[He laughs.]

Probably average, I guess.

Yeah, maybe that was a poor thing to ask. I have no idea how my battling skills are.

[Whatever.

Unless Radley has anything else to say, the rest of the journey will continue in silence. Until slowly but surely, the familiar sight of New Bark Town comes into view...]

Yeah, we don’t battle much. Pretty much just if we have to, usually.

[Radley looks up as New Bark becomes visible.

“Vee!” says Evie.]

Here you go. New Bark Town. Now we're here, you can see the Petal Gym, just here to our left.

[Jotaro will point the building out as Kosugi slows down. The Aurorus pulls up by the Town's entrance and gives a small, low, satisfied cry. As soon as he does so, Vivian stops concentrating, bringing down the sled with a slightly-heavy 'thud'. The Espurr collapses backwards into Jotaro's, exhausted, and Jotaro pets her head.]

Thank you, Vivian. Thank you, Kosugi. [The Aurorus looks back to the humans and smiles, nodding respectfully. After that, Jotaro looks over to Radley.]

Watch your step. Don't want you slipping again.

[crystalmaster]

Great. Thanks.

[Radley looks to the gym.]

Cool.

[Evie warbles, pleased to see the Gym and also thanking their new friends. Radley holds her as he gets down.]
