So. I. Talked with the professor in this town. The Johto one. He took a look at His Uselessness.

[Gil's seated at a table in a lab, and behind him in an aquarium is the enormous shiny Magikarp in question.]

Turns out, he has a bit of pica. Meaning he likes to eat rocks. Specific rocks. Everstones, to be precise. A lot of Everstones. Before I caught him he'd eaten so many that they make up a significant percentage of his scales' mineral composition.

[That would explain the weird 'jewels' studding the River King's dorsal fins.]

The only way he'll ever evolve is if he doesn't eat any more everstones and someone manages to remove the ones in his gut, but good luck with that. He'll get new scales in......

A decade.
[Gil's eyes are glazed, and the despair is rather evident. He turns that frown upside down though, and tries to put on that golden cheery smile]

Pretty impressive catch.

[ Chris half-wishes he could've seen it in person, since that's some Hardcore Sega Bass Fishing trophy right there, but he isn't about to double back through the snow from Cherrygrove just to scan it with his Gear. ]

That said, why not let 'em go if you find that it's only weighing you down?

[ Can't help but make that pun though, judging from the size of it. That, and if it's ultimately useless to another trainer's team then why.. hawk it in a way. ]

That's what I thought, and then he started beating me upside the head. He's a bully. It's probably better he stay a 'Karp, because he'd probably be an ecological disaster evolved.

[Beat. Beat.] Oh, har har. He's not unbearable, and he makes a pretty good sparring partner since he's extremely overleveled.

[ All right, the thought of some (probably) fifty pound fish flailing against a kid almost gets him to laugh, but Gil makes a good point about having it evolving into some monster probably looking to squash other kids. ]

Looks like he's rather fond of you. Tough love, I suppose. Though I dunno why you're looking to give away a partner like that. Unless you're looking for a reason to show him off? ;)

That, and he's an enormous bully who hates everyone and everything. [Though, at this point, Gil is basically his warden. He can't inflict it on just anyone. And he does make a good sparring partner for his Krabby....]

Eeh. It was half said in jest. It's probably better this way, honestly. A Gyrados with his attitude would basically be a...whatsit. Kaiju?

Yeah, a bully Gyarados would be kind of a pain, wouldn't it...

...Ahh, I mean, at least there's less he can do than an asshole Staryu, I guess.

You are giving him away because he will not evolve?

No, not really. He's gold, and therefore special, even if he's an insufferable jerk. He's a treasure, in a way. [Despite being the worst] I was just exasperated.

Ah, I see. [Does he?] I didn't know that Pokemon could be different colors. Is it very rare?

Apparently it is. The odds are...low. one in three thousand or something? I just got...'lucky'

[ Coming from someone with six Magikarp, she can all too well understand this "child" and his frustration. ]

That is an odd title for a Pokemon. [ Really... how would he like it if someone referred to him in an embarrassing manner? ] Though I suspect that within ten years, he'll come to love it and the trainer who bestowed it upon him.

It's rather fitting. My Eevee and Purrloin agreed with me on it, so it's more of a consensus against tyranny. The day he owns it, though...

[The idea of ten years locked here gives him pause. His normally unflappable composure softens.] Aah...how long are people stuck in this world, usually?

I'm afraid that's an answer I cannot reliably provide. [ Rosa dips her head in an apologetic fashion. ] Many people come and go in this world without any distinguishable pattern to set the experiences apart.

I haven't been here for long myself, but my friend from our world has been here for... much, much longer. [ It's still difficult to say out loud, so her voice cracks at that. ]

Have you tried weaning him off of the rocks? Or replacing it with some other rock? I know some animals eat rocks for digestion, but that just sounds excessive.

[Pica can be treated, but how do you do that with a fish?]

I haven't given him any, and to my knowledge he hasn't gotten a hold of any since being caught. Everstones aren't crazy common, but who knows with this fish.

So the stones changed his biology. That can happen. You should try to pull some of those scales and see if that helps.

You're saying I should....pull chunks of what is essentially his skin off.

I don't know if fish feel pain the same way we do.

That may be the least thought out plan I've heard since I got here. If he does feel pain, I would have a thirty or fifty pound fish within arm's reach very cross with me. I don't like concussions.

...Sone of us have been in this world for over six years. Waiting ten years might be a possibility for you, if you are extremely lucky.

If it makes you feel any better, we are very much the exception, rather than the rule. Though that does mean that His Uselessness is likely to be passed along to many trainers before he has the opportunity to show off his majestic evolution.

Oh, he's fine. Healthy as ever. Magikarp are oddly robust.

W-well that is what it says in the pokedex entry on them.

....I have ta say, I don't think I've ever met a fish with that kind of expensive taste before.

He reminds me of someone I know, if they were incarnated as a useless large fish. [Bad attitude, expensive tastes, gaudy appearance ...]

Ha. Didn’t like them much either, huh?
