Hello. If it is not too much of a bother, I was wondering if someone might be able to answer a question I have.

[There is a short flash of the top of a blue dome on the bottom of the video feed before it disappears out of view again.]

Recently I hatched a pokemon that turned out to be a shiny. [Like three hours ago.] I know what this means in terms of visual difference, but does it affect anything else? Should I be on the look-out for any potential health problems like with albinism or are there no concerns there? And--

Well, I suppose what I really would like to ask is... does this sort of thing affect a pokemon's personality in any way? It's just-- The pokemon I hatched... it doesn't act at all like any others of its type I've met. So I couldn't help but wonder... could this be due to it being a shiny?

Shiny?

[Okay, this is a new one for him. He's never heard of a shiny Pokemon before.]

So we're all going to end up with a shiny of some sort out of those eggs? Or is it random?

Sometimes pokemon have wildly different colours than what is common for their species.

[He moves his gear around so he can record the voltorb chilling on the bed with him. It's sky-blue.]

I'm not sure if you've ever seen a pokemon like this before, but normally voltorbs are red and white. But as you can see, mine has a completely different colouring. That's what's called a shiny.

Though, this is only the first shiny I've ever hatched, so I don't know a lot more than this.

Oh, yeah. There were a bunch of those at the mansion during prom, weren't there?

[He and Prompto had spotted some during all of the mess of evacuating the Pokemon that had been captured there.]

I wonder what makes them Shiny. I mean, I wonder why they end up that way. Some sort of mutation, I'm guessing?

Those were electrodes, actually. It's what this pokemon will evolve into, but they look fairly similar.

[Just colour flipped and suddenly with a mouth and eyebrows.]

As for that, I wouldn't know. This is only my first shiny, and to be absolutely honest, there's been so much to learn about in this world, I haven't really had a chance to look into that yet. An experienced breeder might know though.

Oh...that is probably one of the most basic evolutions I've ever seen in terms of looks.

Gotcha. I'll have to ask around a bit. I'm really curious now if there are other variations like that--though I thought I heard something about different versions of like Vulpix or something? I can't remember for sure.

Supposedly voltorbs came into existence when people first started mass-producing pokeballs to capture pokemon. If that sort of thing is true, then I think it is understandable that their evolution would still resemble a pokeball very closely.

Ah, you might be referring to Vulpix' Alola form. Apparently a small population of vulpixes moved to live in less populated icy regions and they adapted to their surroundings by evolving white coats and changing their fire type to ice. I don't have one myself, but several of my friends do. They are really fascinating. They are not the only species either that has an different form on these islands.

Wait, so they were created, in a way? They weren't a creature that already lived in the world?

[Pokemon just keep getting weirder and weirder the more he learns.]

Yeah, that's the one. So it's not really like being shiny since it's an adaptation and not a mutation or whatever you want to call it.

That is what the pokedex is hinting at. There is not a lot of information though. There are apparently some pokemon that are manmade, so it is not impossible that humans could have a hand in the existence of voltorbs too. Even if it was an accidental one.

That's right. Apparently they even have their own shiny forms, though I've never seen one like that.

That's crazy. I mean, how..can you just make a creature? And then have them reproduce and populate the world?

[Do the scientists here have nothing better to do?]

Huh. So adaptations are a thing. Shiny variations are a thing. Are there any other differences? Do some of the females look different than males? I remember some of the monsters we encountered back home having slight differences if you knew what you were looking for.

[Don't ask Armin. He really doesn't understand it either. This world is strange and exhilarating and wonderful but seriously so strange.]

Sometimes they do. In some species the difference can be quite large even, though I've never seen one of those.

I've never really met someone with a male vileplume, but supposedly the spots on their petals are different between males and females. My vileplume is female, so she has fewer, but larger spots. On a male, the spots are more numerous, but they are smaller. I guess you have to have a really good eye to see small differences like that though.

That's kind of neat though, small but noticeable all the same. I noticed something like that with the Magikarp I've caught. It's subtle but the whiskers are a different color on the females.

I haven't been able to see this for myself, but there are some species of pokemon that have completely different fur. Oh, and some species that will evolve differently depending on whether they are male or female.

[He doesn't have much more than that though. He's only heard this stuff mentioned, but hasn't dug into it. He also doesn't really own a pokemon species with big physical differences between males and females.]

Really? I didn't know about that.

Different fur? Like, different colors or some sort of bigger difference?

[While he's not usually one to get super interested in this like this, it's pretty cool how different Pokemon can be across the board.]

Yeah! I noticed it after I caught a few different ones. I mean, there were other slight differences but that was a consistent one between the males and females.

I'm not really sure. Sorry, I only read a short reference to it somewhere. I think it was in one of the cat-like pokemon species, but I'm not completely certain.

Nah, it's okay. No reason to apologize. This just means I need to start paying closer attention to things like this.
