Hello. If it is not too much of a bother, I was wondering if someone might be able to answer a question I have.

[There is a short flash of the top of a blue dome on the bottom of the video feed before it disappears out of view again.]

Recently I hatched a pokemon that turned out to be a shiny. [Like three hours ago.] I know what this means in terms of visual difference, but does it affect anything else? Should I be on the look-out for any potential health problems like with albinism or are there no concerns there? And--

Well, I suppose what I really would like to ask is... does this sort of thing affect a pokemon's personality in any way? It's just-- The pokemon I hatched... it doesn't act at all like any others of its type I've met. So I couldn't help but wonder... could this be due to it being a shiny?

Hey wait, is this from those eggs everyone just like, found in their bags a couple of weeks ago? Cos mine hasn't even begun to make like, any sounds yet let alone crack!

[Sorry, Ash, you were probably employing a bit of humorous hyperbole, but Armin is sort of like this.]

I don't think you should need to worry though. Different types of pokemon hatch at different speeds. My dratini took weeks to hatch. In fact, of the three eggs I've hatched, this one hatched the quickest.

Is this the first egg you'll be hatching?

It's just the coloration. Other than that, they're no inherently different from any other individual of the same species.

Then the unusual personality might just be natural variation as well? I've never had a pokemon like this before.

Color is color. Personality is personality. The two are not correlated. Not in people and not in pokémon.

If your shiny friend is acting weird to you it might just be it's normal behavior. Pokemon generally look the same but their behaviors and personalities all are quite different and unique from creature to creature.

I think maybe get to know it better before making any judgement calls on it.

Normally I'd say the same, but this world has already tested every assumption I ever had about animals, so I thought it best to check. I don't want to miss out on things that might be important by clinging only to what I am familiar with.

If it turns out his personality is simply this way due to a natural fluke of birth, I'm fine with that, of course. I just wanted to be certain.

He would've rather have had one of the rooms that had a window to the outside, maybe even on the deck itself, but things didn't always work out as hoped.

He doesn't want to walk either, so instead of doing that, he lets himself be piggybacked into the room by his Machoke with careful, slow steps. The poor thing has never seen his trainer like this before, so he doesn't want to be too rough!

It feels a little weird being carried by something a good foot shorter than he is, but it's better than the alternatives. Marcel's got different markings 'n he's fine. S'just like other Arcanine I've read about and met.

Shiny?

[Okay, this is a new one for him. He's never heard of a shiny Pokemon before.]

So we're all going to end up with a shiny of some sort out of those eggs? Or is it random?

Ah, no, it seems to be a random thing.

Sometimes pokemon have wildly different colours than what is common for their species.

[He moves his gear around so he can record the voltorb chilling on the bed with him. It's sky-blue.]

I'm not sure if you've ever seen a pokemon like this before, but normally voltorbs are red and white. But as you can see, mine has a completely different colouring. That's what's called a shiny.

Though, this is only the first shiny I've ever hatched, so I don't know a lot more than this.

A Pokémon's shininess does not negatively influence its health, have no fear. The personality, however... I suppose certain Pokémon might become particularly proud of their unique coloring, with all the quirks that can cause.

[Not that his own vain Pokémon needed to be shiny to become so.]

I suppose that would be something to look out for. Though he doesn't seem particularly vain.

Either way, I'm glad to hear this won't have any effect on his health. That is the most important thing.

I've never encountered anything from Typhon's evolutionary line in the wild or owned by other trainers, so I can't compare him to the rest of his species, but I haven't observed anything wrong with his personality.

[Aside from the fact that with his colors, he looks like something that would skin you alive and devour you in the blink of an eye, if they'd been back on Pandora. But he's so... tame, outside of battle.

I suppose I got a bit lucky this time. Then again, voltorbs are supposed to be a more common species of pokemon and they tend to hatch more quickly.

[Not that... he had ever seen any other voltorbs in the wild before. But still, that is what the pokedex said.]

I wasn't aware you had a shiny pokemon. Which kind is he?

As you might have noticed, in general pokemon of the same species all tend to look somewhat similar. Though there are some variations, of course, unlike dogs or horses, they tend to all have the same colours. On rare occasion, a pokemon will be hatched that is coloured quite unlike those of its species members.

[Armin pans the gear around to show off the voltorb relaxing on the bed.]

As you might see, my new voltorb is sky-blue and white, however a regular voltorb would be bright-red and white, much like a pokeball. They are quite rare, so I feel very fortunate I've been able to hatch one.

[Sasha's spent the last few minutes rubbing Bertolt's back, urging him to just barf if he can because better out than in is what they say! Not that it's always true, but she's always felt better when she got whatever was making her stomach sick out. Science... or something.

She has left Bertolt in the care of Jean 2.0 who has no hands to rub his back, but does have a cold wet nose to get the same motion going and moves over to Armin and his strange looking Voltorb, stooping down to its level]

It's not really shiny shiny, is it?

[To be honest, it looks kind of dull. Not like bright lights or those diamond things.]

It's not really supposed to be. It's just to indicate a difference in colour.

[The voltorb, meanwhile, stares at Sasha. He's got a pretty serious face for something that was only hatched three hours ago. But, at the very least, he's not even making a move towards zapping her.]

Oh wow, I've got Agatha incubating mine but it's still shaking... Umm, I mean- I've hatched a shiny before and he was- well, he was a type I'd already hatched, you know? He was different than Arwen, but I think that's just 'cause he's a more...reticent? So far he's been healthy, though! [As if knowing he's being talked about, a black nose pokes at her elbow, the tell-tale sign of a shiny Umbreon.] I don't think you're gonna have to worry about that, it doesn't seem like...anything dangerous.

That's good to hear. I really don't mind the unusual personality. [in fact, its working out pretty great for him.] But if there are any health concerns I feel I should be on top of those.

It was a bit of a disaster, wasn't it?

[His voice is low, soft, as he tips his head down a little, his bangs casting a shadows on his face. Thankfully his black eye had healed by now, so at least Shiro didn't have to see that. It had been a bit foolish to think this world was completely free of dark influences, that party had made them very apparent.]

It seems I underestimated the people of this world. To my own loss. Or rather, that of one of my pokemon.

[Jean messages Armin with video, since he's hanging out on the deck of the ferry with his Electrode horde. In fact, they're clearly clustered all around him with curiosity, the tops of their domed bodies visible in the lower part of the video. Jean is grinning wide, and he moves right in with what he has on his mind.]

Geesh, Armin, Eren could bunk with Bertolt and I for a night if you need some alone time.

[You know what, in this case, Armin is just going to let the visual do the talking.

In response to Krieg's question, he turns around the camera so he can see the lovely blue and white voltorb sitting on Armin's pillow. What a nice voltorb. Not as squinty and criminal looking at Blitz by a long shot.]

I'm thinking of calling him Circinus.
