Thirteenth feather - (during fourth wall) [Video]

[The feed opens on Rakka, seated in her bedroom, a few of her pokemon sleeping in various positions around her. She looks... happy.

And who wouldn't be? It's that wonderful time of the year again where 'things' happen, people appear, things change. Rakka changed, as can be instantly seen by the very real wings sticking out of her back, and the very real halo hanging over her head.

Just another day in Johto.]

It looks like everything's back to 'normal' again. [she laughs shortly while she addresses the camera.] If anyone doesn't know, this is something that happens a few times every year, everyone becomes normal and gets their powers back., but it only lasts for a little while.

[Sigh. She pets the (green?) Houndour next to her.]

Anyway, I was... wondering about the gyms in this region, the later ones? If anyone could tell me some things about them, I'd really appreciate it. [...ah] And, um, if I could hear anything about the cities like "Backthorn" or "Cianwood" that would probably help too.

[And with that question somewhat awkwardly shoved in, he shrugs impulsively before cutting the feed.]

[That sure is a lot of wind in Penny's video, when she answers. And. Clouds? And boy does that background look an awful lot like some very distant ground and treetops.]

Cianwood's really nice, it's by the sea! And the gym leader's strong, but he uses FIghting types, so you should be fine! You've got lots of Flying and Ghost types. Just be careful around his Hitmonchan, it knows a bunch of elemental attacks.

Cianwood is... by the sea. Okay. I'll have to figure out where that is then. [There's a lot of sea she hears.] Penny, you've been to those places, right?

Ecruteak, Cianwood, and Mahogany Town, yes. Not to Blackthorn yet. You have to go through some kind of ice cave to get there, I think? And last time I had the chance it was right before everyone's birthday, so I didn't have that much time to spend.

An... ice cave? [???] W-wow, there really is so much of this region I haven't seen yet. I didn't even know we had things like that.

I know! ...I don't know if it's actually made OF ice or just. Really cold, though.

Well... in any case! I'd like to go see it sometime!

That's why I've decided that I'm going to go out and try to get the rest of the johto badges!

Well, which gyms do you already know about?

Oh, mostly just the first three in Johto. Those are the ones I have badges from already.

Ah, so Ecruteak would be next, I imagine? The leader there uses primarily ghost-type pokemon. Olivine and Cianwood are usually next for most people; Olivine specializes in steel-types, and Cianwood in fighting. Cianwood is located far to the south of Olivine and requires either taking a ferry across the water, or riding a pokemon to reach it. The city itself is on the small side, but it's on the coast, so there's quite a few beaches. You can also reach the Safari Zone from there, if you're interested in catching pokemon.

Blackthorn is in the far northeast corner of Johto, and is usually the last gym people challenge for badges in the region. The leader uses dragon-types. The town isn't overly large, but there's a cave nearby known as the Dragon's Den where various dragon pokemon can be found.

Ghost types... I think I actually heard about that a long time ago. I once went to Ecruteak for a festival.

[And then never went back because of... reasons.]

That's all very helpful, but what's a "safari zone"?

It's a park of sorts, where visitors can catch various pokemon. You pay a small fee and choose the area you wish to explore, and then are given a limited number of balls to use in the park. You can then keep whatever you manage to catch.

But, uh, can't you do that anywhere else?

Yes, but they have a somewhat different variety of pokemon than what you'd find on most routes. Also, you don't actually battle the pokemon there.

That's strange.

[A pause.]

But, interesting. I thought everything in this world was about battling.

I imagine that's what makes the Safari Zone so unique an appealing to people here.

That actually sounds really neat. Maybe I should visit it while I'm getting my badges.

It wouldn't be a bad way to spend a day while you're there, at least.

I.... actually can't remember the time I got a new pokemon. Besides an egg, that is.

Might be. It's been so long, I wonder if I even remember how to catch a pokemon.

[She's... joking, of course.]

Well in that case, then I suppose there's nothing for it but to learn from the start all over again...

Little disappointed we're not on the moon this time when it's happening. It's been harder to keep track of who popped in.

[ A thoughtful pause. So... ]

Hey Rakka, what powers to literal angels have?

Yeah, I really miss that, but I guess this is just how it normally happens around here.

Or, normal as in.... not normal?

[what is she talking about? Not even she's sure about it.]

I don't know, Dirk. To tell you the truth, I've never met an actual angel.

Poké-Normal.

[ He thinks he understands? Prom aligning was a rarity. The moon more-so. Rakka makes sense. ]

I see... [ You sure? ] What powers do you have?

Ah. Poke-Normal. [Rakka being Rakka is a surprisingly often occurrence.]

You mean like, flying and other things?

[She turns around, giving Dirk a full look at the wings sticking out of the holes in her shirt. Her wings, which are white-ish grey in color, flutter a bit as Rakka moves her shoulders.]

Hehe... the truth of it is, I can't really do anything I couldn't do before. People have asked me if I can fly, but my wings really aren't that useful for anything.

[ There was a significant lack of wings outside of Poke-Universe, despite Calliope's doodling of such. This looks so friggin' anime. ]

Just for show, huh? At least they're cute. Seems like an odd appendage to have without providing a function. Perhaps they would have grown to an appropriate wingspan with age.

They are pretty cute, aren't they? Hehe.

[Wow. Rakka. Looks anime. What an odd remark to make.

Truthfully, Rakka's normal look might invoke more of a resemblance to Hallmark cards, but the anime comparison works too, not that she'd know.]

You think? I don't know, there aren't any Haibane much older then me back home. [Ah] At least, right now. Maybe they do get bigger, even if that jut means there's more feathers I have to clean up.

[ So weird it came out of nowhere. He's not as familiar with Hallmark cards, as culturally knowledgeable as he'd like to claim. When he thinks of the cards the image that comes to mind is chubby naked baby-like cherubs. Rakka's look is preferable. ]

What are Haibane? [ Apparently not angels. ] Have you been leaving a trail of them behind you?

A... a little one. [She says, somewhat embarrassed.] I-I'll clean it up before I leave the city.

[...Oh, he asked something about Haibane? She can only shrug.]

Ah, Haibane? Well, we're kind of complicated. No one really seems to know what we are, but I think there's some people that know. What's strange is that no one knows where we come from.

[ Poor Rakka. So easily embarrassed. He doubts anyone would notice if she left feathers there. They'd probably blame one of the Pokemon. ]

Soon. Ish. I-I want to get as many badges as I can.

[Hey, if you shed feathers wherever you go, you'd be a little self conscious about it too!! She probably has the dust pan set up already.]

Yes, I do... well, it's kind of a theory, I guess. [She frowns.] It's kind of sad though.

W-what about you, Dirk? How many badges do you have?

Ah, I have an ice cream shop in Blackthorn, it's a small place but it's nice. Quiet.

[A pause.]

Clair isn't nice or quiet though. She uses Dragon types and she gets mad when you beat her. I've heard this, um...a lot.

Really, ice cream? That's so cool!

[....Heh. But yes. Ice cream was one of those treats Rakka favored so heavily these days. Something she couldn't get before.]

And, um, is that.... so? Oh wow, at least I kind of already went through that.

[But can she date Clair? That's the important question here.]

Like with Whitney? Uhh...it's sort of the same, but Clair is kind of scarier than Whitney. She outright demands you to prove that you're actually worthy of her badge. Her grandfather usually has to intervene to get her to stop having a tantrum and give up the badge from what I've seen.

[Clair's too old for Rakka, that would just be weird.]

The shop is called Sweethearts if you ever come across it! You can say Xion sent you and get free sea-salt ice cream. Or any kind of ice cream.

[Nuts]

And since she's the last gym in Johto and all [She thinks] I-I guess she would want to make sure you're ready to beat her whenever you get to her.

[she's going to mentally make a note about that store. And this strange ice cream made of salt.]

Xion. Alright. I'll be sure to remember her name then!

You know, when you put it that way I think I can see it from her perspective a little more. Sorta.

[She grins.]

Haha--I'm Xion! I hope you remember my name, anyway! I don't think I got yours at the party, though.

Oh! Haha! [Ah, Rakka's found herself laughing more recently. Which is good. It's a good sound.]

[And made a mess apparently, which was totally fine because the Rockets deserved it.]

It's good to meet you too, especially after all that. Did your Pokemon recover okay from it? That was a scary situation.
