[A happy little twill comes in response as an Audino is briefly in view before she turns the gear on her trainer. The young man looks a little ruffled or maybe that's just his natural state, Newt absently adjusting his jacket as he sits down on a log.]

Yes, hello. My name is Newt Scamander and I am relatively new to this place. Only been around for a, ah, few days now, I believe it's been.

[His smile is a touch awkward and maybe even a little shy. He's really not good at this sort of thing.

A sharp little chirp announces the presence of a Starly that hops into view on the log, one leg carefully folded up and it looks as though it's been wrapped up due to an injury. Newt's expression melts into a genuine smile as he gently scoops the little thing up, allowing Merlin to rest on his thigh.]

Right then. I've just finished reading through what there is in the Pokedex, a rather fascinating read so many creatures I haven't encountered before--

[He's in his element here.]

--and I was wondering if there was..well..more. To read, that is. A library perhaps? Anything that could help fill in the gaps that my Pokedex is lacking until I can fill the rest in myself.

Non-magical beings tend to be..scared of the magical world. Scared of what they don't understand. Some see it was an act of evil while others are simply just scared of it.

If they are scared because they don't understand, couldn't you teach them? Rather than keep them in the dark.

Wizards and witches alike have tried before. And there have been points in time were we lived together without issue but it comes and goes. There are some non-magical beings that know; many a magical beings end up married to non-magicals. It's a bit of a case by case sort of situation.

Isn't there a danger in that sort of thing, keeping people in the dark? I admittedly don't know what those magical creatures are like in your world, but in our world... in the stories, dragons are always quite... ferocious. If things like that live in your world but you aren't allowed to know about it, wouldn't that put you at risk? You wouldn't know what to look out for, after all.

There is but that's why the Ministry of Magic works very hard to make sure no harm comes to Muggles. There are many laws in place that prohibit using magic against them and various departments work to keep all manner of magical creatures and beings from harming and disrupting the Muggle world.

[Armin hums softly, not entirely convinced. He is very familiar with governments deeming certain things taboo and keeping people away from them to 'protect' them. But, as he is not very familiar with Newt's world, he can hardly say that is what is going on here. Perhaps the intention is pure here. Surely not every government is screamingly corrupt.

Besides, there is a rather more interesting subject at hand.]

If you don't mind... could you tell me more about the magical animals?

[It's more complicated than Newt is making it sound, especially since there are actually many different forms of government all across the world; the Ministry of Magic is just one of hundreds. But he's more than happy to get off that subject because honestly the whole thing is a bit of a mess.

His expression brightens when creatures are brought up.]

What would you like to know? And which would you like to hear about? There are quite a lot and it would take a good deal of time to go over them all but I'm willing to talk about any of them.

Anything really. As far as I know, we don't have anything like this in our world. [As far as he knows, because who even knows what is out there beyond the walls. Might be magical creatures, might be depressing WWII allegories.] Lets see... are there any magical creatures that live in the ocean?

Yes, indeed there are! Ramoras are native to the Indian Ocean. Shrakes inhabit the Atlantic Ocean. Sea Serpents tend to live in both the Atlantic and the Pacific--I believe there have been sightings in the Mediterranean as well though I have not confirmed it myself. Hippocampus are extremely common in the Mediterranean, just as Merpeople are--though they can be found in just about any body of water depending on their preference!

I've never heard of any of these...

What are they all like? Are they dangerous? Have you ever seen any of them before?

I suppose any beast has the potential to be dangerous but if you treat them with respect and give them they're space, they're all rather lovely in their own way. I've seen most of them myself though I haven't been able to study most of them near as much as I would like yet. Sea Serpents, for example, are rather illusive and prefer to stay out of sight and out of mind if they can. Ramoras are guardians of ships and travelers so they're a fairly common sight and seem to enjoy interacting with people when given the chance. Merpeople are...they're a rather temperamental bunch. Some can be pleasant enough but it's best to keep your distance. Oh and Shrakes are rather spiny creatures that just tend to keep to themselves but they will cause trouble for Muggle fisherman if they aren't careful--they really aren't fond of nets. Hippocampus are probably my favorite of the bunch. They're large sea horses, essentially, though their front half is entirely that of a horse and then they have a fish tail!

Could you tell me more about Ramoras? What do they look like?

[As a kid who loves travelling, of course he is most enraptured by a magical beast that is said to protect travellers and ships.]

They are rather long and large silver fish that tends to follow boats and has the ability to anchor them to keep them safe which is why they're considered the guardians of seafarers. They--their ability to anchor ships is in part due to the flat head they have that's a bit like a suction cup, I suppose you could say. But I have a feeling it's largely to do with their magical abilities. The one that I encountered briefly during my travels was well over ten feet long but it was hard to tell the exact length from my spot on the boat.

[Oh but what a sight it had been!]

That sounds incredible.

[He wishes he could see one. Though they do sound a bit small compared to Amber, but then, everything is small compared to his most darling wailord.]

Is there any particular reason for them to engage in that behaviour? The way you describe them they sound like amazing guardians, but I cannot help but wonder if there anything to gain for them by protecting these ships. Is it like some sort of symbiotic relationship?

It's hard to say for sure, as no one has been able to communicate with one of them directly. It seems that they engage with seafaring ships simply because they're curious, though it could also be argued that they just like causing a bit of mischief anchoring ships whenever they feel like it. I think it's evolved into a more helpful behavior over time as no creature in their right mind would want to swim straight into a storm if you're that close to the surface so it only makes sense to anchor the boat you're already attached to.

They are truly a sight. I would love to one day travel further out to sea and try to find a larger specimen--to see them in the open ocean rather than around ports.

There's large fish pokemon here too, though they aren't particular magical. You must have read about them, but seeing them in person is really a different thing.

I did, yes! There were some rather fascinating ones to read about and I very much look forward to seeing some of them in person.

[Newt is quiet for a moment as he watches the videos but when he comes back into view after switching it over once more--with only a little fumbling--his expression is bright with excitement.]

Those are Wailords, correct? Absolutely amazing! They are truly stunning--the Pokedex entry hardly does them justice!

Aren't they? Of course, I always thought Amber was amazing, even when she was a wailmer, but when she evolved she became even more impressive.

And-- [A sentence bitten off, his voice excited and bright as he fumbles for the right words.] Most other water pokemon aren't bothered by wailords. So when you are on her back and she is swimming around, you can get really close to other sea pokemon without startling them away. It's amazing to just be able to lay there and watch all of those pokemon live their lives as they naturally would. Not that there is anything wrong with trainer owned pokemon, of course. But in the wild... their priorities are completely different.

I can only imagine how absolutely amazing that is. Being able to engage with them, watch them naturally..it was one of my favorite things to do back home when I was given the chance. I can only imagine it's just as wonderful here. Especially when it comes to something like the ocean!

I have been told that we are able to fly on some Pokemon as well. I bet that would be an interesting way to observe Pokemon as well. Especially those that also fly.

They can. You'll need HM02 to teach them though. If you are a trainer, you'll also need a certain badge, though breeders can teach their pokemon without badges.

[How that works, we just don't know.]

One of mine knows fly. Soaring on his back... it's really amazing. Though it took some getting used to at first.

[Though, who knows, Newt might adjust to it easier than Armin had. After all, it's not that different from flying on a broom, right?]

Really? I suppose that's good to know since I am apparently suppose to be a breeder while I am here.

[He hadn't really read much about his job here. Newt had been far too worried about reading everything he could about Pokemon.]

I can imagine it would. Being on the back of a creature soaring through the sky..there really isn't much that can compare to that experience, I imagine.
