☆79☆ [Video]

[It may be a rainy afternoon - a bit stormy, even - but this video is being filmed anyway, albeit heavily zoomed in and from a seat indoors. It's a video of a Surskit and a Dewpider, floating on top of a pond with their natural water tension.

Or, well, floating is probably the wrong word for this. The Dewpider bows and extends one of his limbs to the Surskit, almost as though asking for a dance. The Surskit appears to accept, and then the two of them start skating over the pond together, almost to a melody that only they can hear. Or, well, if there is music for them, it can't be heard from here, in any case...

Regardless, the feed is left watching them, but a sleepy-sounding voice decides to narrate. ...To one definition of narrate, anyway.]

Y'know, I've never really gotten what some people have against bugs.

I think it's the many eyes and the many legs. People don't like that.

[After having a giant insect as a partner for a while, Britt has newfound appreciation for bugs. There he is in the screen, with a giant bee holding onto him]

I know, right? And these bugs are like a thousand times bigger than they're in my world, yet most people here are pretty okay with them. I'm sure if these bugs were in my world, there'd be a lot of people freaking out.

[Guess it's matter of getting used to them, but there sure would be panic for a while]

I like bugs.

[Or, it's more that Thida's never been scared of them. She grew up in the mountains, and nature is easier to understand when you live in the thick of it.]

Guess it's like...people don't like if they're comin' at ya.

I think it is probably unfamiliarity. People don't really know much about them, so they view them as creepy or maybe even dangerous when they are completely innocent and can even be very useful.

It's the same back home, really.

[Armin was that kid that had caterpillars in jars and could lay on his stomach for hours watching the ants go by. Bugs are a-okay in his book.]

It seems to be human nature to some degree.

[A sad degree. Armin can't really understand it.]

But, if it is based on ignorance, at least that also means that it can be changed. As long as people are willing to learn, that is.

While bugs are theoretically lovely creatures, in practice their swarms destroy gardens and ruin weeks of hard work mercilessly.

[Looks like someone's garden is dead. Again.]

I would argue that their actions and nature are linked, but that may be the frustration speaking. The ones I train would certainly never harm our plants, after all.

Yeah, same. I never had much of a problem with 'em. They're just kinda there. Maybe annoying, sometimes, if they're getting in your face or bothering you during the summer but not that bad.

Birds can go fuck themselves, though.

[Hank is particular in his phobias. But he's gotten used to Connor's big spider-monster.]

Farm birds are the worst. They'll be the fucking end of you.

[He has strong, strong bird feelings, okay...]

You know, actually, where did you get that Surskit? Might try to catch one for Connor.

Negative associations and connotations - insects are so often used as symbols to inspire horror and disgust. The ideas become attached.
a_sin_for_him: (well actually hehe)

A bad experience is hardly needed. We understand there's nothing to fear from insects and their kin because we know what they are. Imagine early humans who still believed the sun and moon were gods who controlled their lives and thunder was proof that those gods were angry.

Think how insects must have looked to them - particularly those that devour crops and produce and cloth and seem set against humanity. Look at predatory insects and imagine yourself an early civilization human who's never seen nor heard of anything like that, save from in cautionary tales.

It depends on the person I think. But I know some people have had bad experiences with certain animals or things similar to them and it can make them afraid of them.

For example, I'm still only just getting over a fear of dogs I've had for around 17 years thanks to certain experiences. You can know the animals are okay and probably safe and still be afraid of them. Fear is annoying like that.
haveyouseenalittlegirl: (I really hate locked doors)

[personal profile] haveyouseenalittlegirl 2019-07-05 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
That's true. Those people aside, bugs do seem to be put in the category of 'gross' things people are scared of.

They do have a lot of traits people might find unsettling. Strange eyes, multiple legs, lots of them and being small they can get in places.

I'm not really afraid of bugs myself. But I do write horror and they show up a lot in that genre.

I suppose it could have to do with the fact that some of them bite and sting, while others contribute to spoiling food and spreading disease...
