1st Match // [video | action] New Bark Town
[The video feed starts off with an eye.
Just one, surrounded by what looks like a mask. After a moment, the eye pulls away and the rest of the mask, which completely covers the owner's face minus the one eye, is revealed.
The voice underneath the mask is guttural and growling, but perfectly audible despite the barrier.]
Mother said to have fun and be careful.
[He rolls his eye and grumbles a bit, quietly at first but quickly growing louder. As he speaks he changes from his indoor voice to his outdoor voice, barking out the words louder and louder as he brings the camera close to his face again:]
How can I HAVE FUN WITHOUT MY AXE!??
[Somebody mad.]

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away...
[The name "Earth" rings a distant bell but nothing more than that. He shakes his head.]
Pandora!! The putrescent pit of paralyzing poverty and poor life prognosis.
Video
This place is way better, I bet. Even if it don't got axes. I came from a pretty crappy place, couldn't have any real life. I'm...different, and my world ain't too keen on people who are different.
But it ain't like that here.
Video
Home is home.
[Then he tilts his head, eye narrowing a bit as he listens to Jimmy's explanation.]
Here is better?
[Krieg has his doubts - for himself, at least - but he's getting some pretty good vibes from this guy. If this place is better for him than the one he was in before, then...Good.]
Video
But yeah, this place is great. Anybody can be anything. Nobody cares. Even people who ain't like everybody else.
Video
[He grumbles thoughtfully at that little nugget of info, dropping his gaze downward to ponder, then turning his head to stare off to one side.
He's got a good point.
He growls quietly and wordlessly in response to the voice in his head.
This could be our chance. Keep the little bird, meet new people, make actual friends? It's already miles better than Pandora.]
Mm...
[His gaze flicks back to the device, and back to Jimmy's face.]
...Maybe.
Video
Hell, look at me! Where I come from? I can't do anything. I can't even walk down a street in public. But here? I got a job, I got a house, I got all kinds of friends...
I think you'll do good here. And you got any questions, you bring'em to me. I been here two years now! Got a trainer badge and everything!
Video
Can't remember the last time someone tried to encourage us.
It's weird, and strange, and it makes his eye sting and his throat feel funny. It's like when he met Maya, and she gave him a chance, but...but worse. She never talked to him like this, like...like he was someone worth talking to, really talking to, like there was a faint but distant possibility there was more to him than just the hulking monstrous psycho.
Like there was a part of him that was actually still human.
He keeps his gaze fixed on Jimmy, though he slowly draws away from the device as the other continues his chatter, eye and head twitching a bit more than usual as he tries to comprehend the magnitude of what's being offered to him.
...
This isn't how people react to him. He's a monster; he doesn't deserve the consideration, the kindness, the empathy.
Even the other Vault Hunters know it.
So why...?
It's too much. It's far too much. He can't handle it.]
Gnngghhhh...Shut-shut-SHUT-SHUT UP!! WHY ARE YOU BEING SO NICE???
no subject
[He shifts the gear and holds up his hands, bringing them into the feed.]
'Cause I know what it's like, when everybody thinks you're a monster, just 'cause you're different.
They call me Lobster Boy, back home. I'm a freak.
no subject
Stupid.
[He means the people who mistreated Jimmy, but it's an ambiguous declaration at best. He fidgets and grumbles for a few moments before turning back to look at the device again.]
There's nothing wrong with your head.
[Which is not something that can be said of Krieg.]
no subject
[Way more than Jimmy has, which is something Jimmy holds onto when the nights get a little too long and dark.]
I try and be better, though. This is a place I can be better.
And I don't think there's anything wrong with your head. You understand me just fine, and I understand you. So what if you think different than other people? That don't make you wrong.
Just different.

He hears him, and he understands him, but he doesn't believe him. Regarding himself, anyway - he's sure Jimmy's telling it like it is in regards to Jimmy just fine. But Jimmy doesn't know Krieg, has only just met him, hasn't seen the horrible things he's done, hasn't seen the horrible thing he is.
...And for the first time he can remember, he cares. He cares what a stranger thinks, because a stranger made the very kind but very misguided attempt to talk to him like a human being. He doesn't want Jimmy to see the horrible, irredeemable creature that he truly is, the monster masquerading as a man.
He shakes his head vigorously, his voice less a growl and more a snarl around the unaccustomed tightness in his throat.]
Wrong wrong wrong! Broken monster, can't be fixed, just put down! Knife in the spleen, bullet in the skull, blood spilling sliding staining silence the suffering!!
no subject
[Jimmy's not accepting that.]
That's what they said about me. And my ma. And all my friends. Like Meep. Cause he couldn't talk like most people can, and he...kinda ate stuff that was still alive. But he was a good kid! He didn't mean nobody no harm. He just wanted to live his life, and why the hell shouldn't he?
Why the hell shouldn't any of us? Cause they say so?
Fuck them! We ain't them and they ain't us and they don't got any clue! You're like us. And ain't nobody gonna put you down or try and 'fix' you here. Ain't nothing needs fixing.
no subject
Until just now, anyway.
He's never tried to win an argument with words. At least, not that he can remember. Words are not his strong suit. Fists are. He kind of wants to hit Jimmy right now - to get him to stop talking - and he's pissed at himself for it, and also glad that this conversation is happening over a communication network and not in person.
He's pretty sure - pretty sure - he wouldn't actually hit Jimmy --
Damn right you wouldn't.
-- but only just.
I wouldn't let you.
It's obvious Jimmy has made up his mind already. Continued protests from Krieg will doubtless fall on deaf ears, and Krieg can't stand to hear any more. His voice shifts from a snarl to a roar halfway through his next statement:]
NNnnggghhh! Sorry, Jim Dear, this Psycho is OUT OF HIS HEAD right now and CAN'T BE REACHED - PLEASE TRY YOUR CALL AGAIN LATER!!!
[And he slams the connection off.]
