Yo! So I've been thinking a little bit about the different worlds and stuff and I was kinda wondering.

Do you guys have any particular meanings behind your names?

[ Kirishima holds up what looks to be like a notepad that would be used normally for restaurant order tickets. ]

For example, my name's Kirishima, right? But in my language that can be broken up into kanji - um, symbols?

So this symbol means 'to cut'.

[ A picture of 切 . His writing is not the best, but it's legible. ]

But you pronounce it 'kiri'. Then this symbol means "island".

[ Next page flipped over, a picture of 島 ]

But it's pronounced 'shima'. You put them together and it can be 'Kirishima' but they also have that extra meaning? Because there are other symbols that can make those same sounds but they don't have the same meaning.

[ How to explain things when you aren't a moron linguistics guy? ]

Anyway, what meanings are behind your names?

[ The Delibirds have arrived in several places. Is anyone fooled by this? ]

I'm Japanese too, so I don't have to explain that, but... My surname is Hihara and my given is Kazuki, can you guess what the kanji might be?
forsaintcecilia: (wry)

[personal profile] forsaintcecilia 2020-12-19 04:19 pm (UTC)(link)
[Kazuki can't help but chuckle.]

It's Hihara, not Hikaru. It's like this: 火原. [Fire and field, respectively.] Kazuki's probably hard to guess. It's a really common name and there must be a million spellings.

I think it fits me okay! I'm a musician by trade-- I was getting classical training back home, and it's how I've made most of my money here. Right now, I'm fixing up an inn! I'm hoping to use it someday as a rehabilitation center for people and Pokemon. The sort of place someone can rest and relax, and heal.

For fun, I like to play sports! And I love sweet things.

The trumpet!

Yeah, it's different. It's meant for more long term stays, depending on what the guest needs. It's not like a Pokemon Center where you can jut get a quick heal and leave.

And my favorite sport is basketball!

... oh my lord, I just realized I don't know what the kanji are in Kishi. I don't think I've ever seen them written down in Japanese.

I mean I wouldn't understand it anyway because I can't actually speak Japanese--I mean, stuff like 'ohayo' and 'sayonara' and 'gomen' doesn't count when it's all you know--but still.

Oh. Um. Good question. Probably the beach? Because I learned to sail once and I was pretty good at it... until we got shipwrecked, anyway, but we got found not too long after that happened.

The knight meaning is distant though. [She says it in a way that makes it sound like it means 'cool.']

[The words you mean are north-east, Claudia.]

[DID SOMEONE CALL FOR A LINGUISTICS GUY? Jaskier is tilting his head at the camera, curiosity definitely piqued.]

Is that the writing system utilized in your world? I've never seen anything like it. As for Jaskier, it means buttercup, like the flower.

[personal profile] rollstoseduce 2020-12-21 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
[Jaskier just nods at first, familiar with the idea of different written systems. But these "kanji" are nothing like elvish or dwarvish - not even runes, even if the concept of one symbol = one word is similar to them. So of course his bard is pretty curious.

What makes his eyebrows go up pretty damn quickly, though, is the explanation that comes after.]

Three writing systems for one language? Fascinating! Would it possible for you to send me a simple sentence written on your first language, Kirishima? I'd love to see it in action.

[That drink comment? He doesn't expect it. After blinking in surprise, he laughs.]

A heavy drink, he says! My boy, the buttercup flower -which is what I'm named after- is poisonous. I'd like to see what kind of drink is deserving of its name! No, in my world we have ale, and wine, and vodka as well. Do any of those sound familiar to you?

[personal profile] rollstoseduce 2021-01-08 06:57 pm (UTC)(link)
[Oh, Jaskier knows that flinch. Winters spent teaching at Oxenfurt have made him very familiar with it! So his inner professor can't help coming out in his grin as he says-] I look forward to it.

[And ok, it's not a lie, he does want to see from an artistic point of view as well. It's not like he can grade it anyway, so no harm done, right?

But ok, that topic is finished, it's all about THE BOOZE now, and Jaskier is all ears. Kirishima mentions a variety of drinks that honestly makes Jaskier a bit jealous, but from what he's seen around here so far? He may have a chance to test that many different flavors in this world as well.]

Rice wine? I never heard of that concept before! Fascinating! Does it taste like actual rice? Most wines do not taste like grapes. [Whiskey, what an interesting word. That's the popular one? He'll have to check it out soon, be on top of the local trends! At the mention of getting a drink named after himself, Jaskier laughs.] It shouldn't be too difficult, it's just a matter of chatting up the right bartender. [Wink~] Is that something that you'd want for yourself? A drink named after you?

I was only being half-serious there, but names in English come in two flavours: inherited and purposeful.

Most people are going to fall into the first category. The second doesn't happen most times unless you're fictional, or you changed the name you got born with.

Me, I got a lotta names. If you want a more interesting one, I can tell you about the one that combines the game of billiards with the devil.

But I figure that everything else just about answered your question already.

[Well, he's not one for the network much, but this curious little post caught his attention. Wouldn't hurt to be a little more social with the mortals...probably.]

My name is Thanatos and it means death--because I am death.

[The sharp teeth are interesting, buuuut being a chthonic god and all, he's seen way weirder.]

My mother did, she is the goddess Nyx--night incarnate. She's rather quite literal with her name choices at times. Or, at least, she was for myself and my twin brother Hypnos.

Oh, right. My name is Greek, but I suppose from the sound of your name...I would guess you are of the far east?

Hmm, I cannot say I am familiar with the name.

[Mainly because he's from some ambiguous time in ancient Greece, and Japan didn't have either name at that time! As he continues, his voice keeps that steady, somewhat monotone sound to it.]

I don't mind answering you. We do indeed have Heracles—rather, Elysium has him now. Though I cannot say I am familiar with Alexander the Great. If he's lived his life and has since died, it was not I whom brought him to the Underworld. If he's some future king, then that would be an inquiry for my sisters—not that I can ask them now, nor would I want to.

[Like Nyx, he's not too fond of speaking with them. There's just something a little off-putting when they know everything that will come to pass.]

As for the job: you're right. Without me, mortals cannot die, so I suppose you can say my duty started earlier than it would for most. It's no bother to me; we gods are not so limited at the start of our existence as newborn mortals are.

[Oh man, those fucking delibirds. Jolyne's quiet for the longest moment as she contemplates it before slowly shrugging, good grief.]

Depends on what language you wanna go with. Since my name's kinda dumb as hell 'bout that sorta shit. Like, Jolyne's pretty English and shit. But my last name's been mostly Americanized [not because she had an issue with her dad until recently, what] to Cujoh [she's just gonna write that down on some scrap paper and hold it up, because of course she is] when it was originally Kujo. [Same dealio there, though she's quietly humming for a brief moment.]

Though I guess my first name in Japanese would also be Jorin, technically. Not that anyone really used that 'sides dad because he's a fucking weirdo. Evidently the kanji for that shit's like [just gonna do a real shit version of 徐] that, which evidently means slowly or gently and [倫 for the next] I think that's just literally "rin" which is kinda fuckin' stupid but whatever, I don't really speak it that much.

My first name, Mira, has a few meanings--"peace," "ocean," or "admirable." My last name translates to "of the cross," which... isn't very exciting, really.

[Oh, Claude finds this interesting. His screen flicks on, showing him sitting with his face leaning on his hand.] You know, I've never seen writing quite like that before, but it's fascinating.

My name isn't necessarily formed the same way names are in your language, but where I'm from, my name means 'immortal'. Or 'eternal'. I guess you could read it either way.
vrdantwind: (Is waiting for you)

[personal profile] vrdantwind 2020-12-19 10:19 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, it's just derived from a similar-sounding word that means the same thing from an older version of our language, that's all. So less of a puzzle, like your kinds of names seem to be, and more just a pretty direct reference to a similar word.

[He smiles.] I'm Claude, by the way. Nice to meet you, Kirishima.

[He doesn't mention that the name he's giving now isn't the same as the name he's actually giving the meaning for. But Claude doesn't have any flattering meaning, and who's going to contradict him?]
vrdantwind: (I'll show you this side of the world)

[personal profile] vrdantwind 2020-12-19 10:41 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, no, you're not offending me! I was just remarking that your language's way of forming names is actually more complex and interesting than mine, I think. But I really like puzzles and hidden meanings and things like that, so I might just be biased.

And yeah, I'm a trainer. I've only been here about a month or so myself, so even if I got started pretty quickly compared to you, I'd guess you're still ahead of me.
vrdantwind: (I'll show you this side of the world)

[personal profile] vrdantwind 2021-01-06 11:56 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, anything that can have more than one meaning, or that's sufficiently complex, can be considered a puzzle to work out. But you're right, it probably doesn't seem too complex when it's something you grew up with. But to an outsider like me, it's pretty mysterious...and fascinating.

But no gyms for me yet! I've got a couple pokémon who could probably take on Falkner by now, from what I've seen of him, but I either need to make them even stronger so they don't need backup, or get their potential backup stronger.

You're Japanese, right?
It's a really pretty language, but I don't think I could ever learn it.

I'm Vinegar Doppio.

Vinegar is a condiment you put on food. It's kind of sour...
I wonder if they have that here.
