A friend of mine fell asleep and has yet to wake up this afternoon. I've tried splashing water on him, but it was not very effective. Does anyone here known any other methods that we could try?

I fear this may not be any ordinary sleep. In this world the likes of us can fall into a deep slumber that last roughly a quarter moon. When we reawaken, we tend to have new memories of home, even new features to our bodies we might not have had, as if we are returned to live those very moments in the flesh.

Yet our bodies here remain.

If it isn't that, and aught more serious, then I would suggest taking him to a Pokémon Center, but I would wager it is the former.

So it is a way for someone to return home temporarily while physically remaining here? How interesting. How can you tell this type of sleep from another?

Unfortunately the most telling aspect is the inability to rouse them regardless of what is attempted. I likewise fell under such a spell, and naught could wake me despite my companions' best efforts.

But yes, it is indeed a means for us to temporarily return, though I question if we truly leave at all, but that is a far larger discussion drenched in theory and speculation. Another time, perhaps.

Chances are your friend shall arise eventually, for better or for worse; I know not the world he is returning to, but I do so hope there is not aught that might leave him worse for wear.

I'm sure it must be disorienting, hopping from one place to another, even if nothing happens besides a very realistic seeming dream.

Pacing is hard.

Okay, maybe pacing isn't hard for most people, but pacing is hard when you have to wheel yourself manually back and forth across the hotel room carpet, carving out a path in between the furniture and the window, not feeling comfortable leaving the side of your still-sleeping friend until you have a better idea what's going on.

After yet another long, arduous pace-wheeling sesh, Rainer goes to find Leo.

"You asked the internet what's wrong with Fitzroy, right? Has anyone said anything yet?"

Leonardo is also pacing, though it's slightly less from worry (though he is) but more from trying to theorize. It seems he keeps part of his brain in his feet for how fast he's walking back and forth between the bed and the desk as he sketches ideas for How to Wake Up Fitzroy on spare bits of paper.

"Only a little, so far. It seems to be a kind of dream, where someone is returned home for a short time, while they physically remain here. Though I'm not sure if there is any way to prove that this is what's occurring."

He isn't entirely convinced, but perhaps more information will come in which will make everything become much clearer.

For all that Morgan tries to be her usual exuberant self whenever Leo or Rainer talks to her, she's worried. She's tried all kinds of things to wake Fitz up, from little jolts of electricity from Mjölnir to having several ghosts at once try to Astonish him awake, to letting Mandelbrot use Uproar for fifteen minutes straight, to jumping on the bed (but not on the Fitz, despite a few close calls).

Nothing has worked, so after sitting around in Fitz's room watching him sleep for a while (which is much less interesting than the stories make it sound), she wanders into the other room where Leo and Rainer are talking.

Hearing what Leo's learned so far, her face falls. "What if he loses all his memories like I did? As far as I know, all I did was fall asleep, and then I woke up here and didn't remember anything. What if he wakes up and he doesn't remember us?"

She can feel tears start to prick at her eyes, so she shakes herself vigorously. "No, Morgan, you can't think like that! We have to find a tactic that works, not mope around--oh!" She turns to Leonardo, brightening. "I know! In all the stories, when someone falls into a magical slumber, only true love's kiss can wake them up!"

Unfortunately Emet-Selch is probably right and your friend fell into the sleep of temporarily going home. It happened to me at the end of last November. Just find them somewhere comfortable to rest for the next week and make sure they've got someone watching over them until then. It can be a Pokemon if you can't spare the humans.

Ah, so this is... somewhat typical, as I've begun to suspect.

It doesn't happen to everybody, but it's certainly not unknown.

Be prepared for the chance he might have changed somewhat when he wakes up again. I know I did while I was away.

Stop trying. Wait a week. Keep him warm and safe in the meantime. His mind has been sent back home, be it for a few hours or a few years. His lack of response may seem alarming, but it is harmless.

...Depending on what he'll live through during his sleep, he may need your support once he's awake.

Yes, I... suspected that might be necessary. And until then, it seems there is little that can be done besides waiting for this sleep to end.

You may also need to stop his Pokémon from drawing on his face, or filling his hand with shaving cream, or putting candy in his hair.

[A beat, as Cecil realizes that maybe that's not a risk for other people.]

It looks like you have had plenty of reasonable responses already, about phenomenon known only to this world...but are you also certain it isn't simply a regular coma?

It's possible that it could be a regular coma, but if so, we are left with the same solution, which is waiting for him to wake up.

[ Well...that sure sucks! It's after a very belated moment that he even thinks to add anything else, and the another delayed moment while he decides if he ought to, but eventually... ]

It seems to be a kind of enchantment, yes. We're still trying to see if there is an effective way to break it, other than waiting for it to end.

It happens.

Sometimes they're asleep for a week. Sometimes longer. He'll probably dream he's gone home, and it'll feel real to him.

It's happened to a lot of us, and it's never easy.

It's probably very lucky that we were already in a hotel room when this incident started. Trying to keep wild pokemon away while on the road would be... much more difficult.
