Who are 'they'?

The people who set up this network, which I assume is the Pokemon League as they seem to organise everything here.

This would include the Gym Leaders, correct?

[schachmeister]

That's right. All official gyms are managed by the Pokemon League. Even our little Otherworlder league is.

[instrumentally]

And you become a member of this League by defeating the Elite Four. At least, that is what is mentioned in the handbook I received.

That's right. Though you don't have to open a gym when you are part of the league. I think only about half of us have.

Do gym leaders have responsibilities besides battling those who challenge them?

[schachmeister]

Gym leaders are often sought out with questions by trainers and breeders alike, especially if you happen to have a certain specialisation, and they are expected to take charge should any danger situation arise. A gym leader that won't do those sort of things would soon lose the respect of the city or area they are located in.

Dangerous situations? Could wild pokemon pose such a threat?

[schachmeister]

Occasionally, but usually that only happens when something disrupts their natural environment.

Sometimes we are called in to assist during natural disasters like earthquakes or cases of very bad weather. But we are also asked to assist when it's humans causing the trouble. Which, honestly, happens more often than the natural disasters.

That is typically what humans do, yes.

It unfortunately seems to be one of the universal constant no matter where you go. Even in the face of much bigger problems, we still seem set on making things more difficult for ourselves.

We are often the cause of those problems, as well.
