[Mikasa had been stopping with Armin on the islands for a while now. Playing with his pokemon, training her own when he was busy. But recently she'd noticed something and she wasn't even sure how to ask...

So she grabbed her gear and tried to record it.

It being her glowing Shinx. Now him glowing wasn't normally too concerning. He did that when getting ready to attack or when he was surprised. But now he was doing it while curled up in a ball and he kept doing it. Then after a few seconds of silently focusing on the cat, she spoke up.]

Does anyone have a cat like this? Is something wrong with him?

[Then his glowing brightened and- and... He vanished, leaving a larger cat in his place.]

...Where'd he go?

[He teleport?? Whose cat is this? Where is her boy?????]

Your cat just upgraded itself, no biggie. Think of it as a caterpillar cocoon situation.

Upgraded? [She was still recording the cat. Not getting any closer even though she'd been told it was her cat because ??? She still didn't get it. He'd grown so quickly, so brightly that Mikasa wasn't sure what to do.

Luckily the luxio's eyes cracked open, his head lifting as he squinted. Then he perked up realizing she was there giving a rumble. Then he stood, took a step forwa-

And fell promptly off of the chair he'd been curled up on. Because now he was twice as big, there wasn't enough room.]

_{[JW bursts out into raucous laughter at the cat's misfortune.]}

[The laughter only gets much indignant yowling from the luxio. Jail for the unknown man. Even as he got headpats.]

Looks like you'll have to get a bigger chair!

[Ah, a newbie's first evolution! And, thankfully, not one that's quite as shocking as Magikarp's or Remoraid's, so Cecil hopes the explanation will be relatively painless.]

Fear not; he's still right in front of you. When they grow strong enough, many Pokémon evolve like this. They grow larger, their appearance changes, and they can learn more attacks. Shinx becomes Luxio, and later on he'll become Luxray, unless he chooses not to.

[Her cute 10kg cat just tripled in weight. It's a lot, even if she can still lift him.]

Um... How big will he get? [Because she's just recording him, sleeping and taking up the whole cushion now. How many cushions would she need for him to sleep on if he got bigger.]

The average weight for a Luxray is 42 kilograms, and the height 1.4 metre. That's about...

[Cecil very obviously starts moving as he speaks, a decision which is explained when the Pokégear suddenly shows a pair of Luxray grooming themselves on a bed. That should be more helpful that mere numbers, he hopes.]

...this large. As you can see, the difference is not quite as striking as the one between Shinx and Luxio.

[Mikasa silently stared at the clip for a moment. Doing some math, thinking...]

He's going to be the same height as me... [Horrifying.]

...I've no doubt you'll outgrow him within a year or two.

[But, yes, admittely horrifying for a young trainer. Surely there's a silver-lining there?]

However, in the mean time, you might be able to ride him on the road. That'll greatly reduce your travel time, should you wish to explore the region.

Oh mine's never done something like that. That must be the evolution thing though...

I guess you can think of it as he just grew up. All at once.

[The camera was still on, watching the dozing cat who started to stir.]

There are some who just... grow faster than others I guess?

[God he's got to get training his own Shinx, Pip, so that she can become like that.]

The one I've had longer hasn't changed at all... [Okay, she was calm again now. Reaching out to pet the luxio that was now sitting on the ground. Her hand getting lost in his black tuffs of fur. Turning the camera around so she could be seen.]

...That won't happen to me will it?

[angewiesen]

That's still the same guy, he just evolved. Pokemon do their growing up all at once.

[By now she's managed to get some idea of what was going on and turned the camera around to show... Her sitting while the newly evolved luxio tried to get on her lap.]

It doesn't seem like he's grown... [His body had gotten bigger, but he was still baby.]

[angewiesen]

I guess he still thinks he's a lap-Pokemon, huh?

[Jean couldn't help but snicker.]

He likes to sleep and hug.

[She sighed, but it was nice having him to hug.]

I know that kind of Pokemon. Take good care of it, and you'll have a cuddle buddy that's even bigger than you after it evolves again.

Oh, he's right there! He's just evolved - he's gotten strong enough to grow up a bit, in a way.

[It doesn't escape her notice that Mikasa is like...a kid, so. Jane keeps the explanation simple.]

It happens quickly for Pokemon, like that.

[There's silence as Mikasa patted the newly grown cat. Then in complete deadpan.]

...Does that mean he's getting old?

Not...not too old? He's still exactly the same age as before, just bigger and stronger, and a bit more able to do things he might not've been able to do before.

Oh good...That means he won't die then.

[Shocked cat wailing-! But that had been Mikasa's worry, that her cat was already old and elderly.]

N...No...he's definitely not going to suddenly die of old age because he's evolved. I promise. Lots of my Pokemon have evolved and they're all perfectly fine.
