Hey, everyone.
First of all: I'm feeling better.
Thanks to anyone that helped last month and, y'know, told me to see a doctor.
I did. I'm good.

Anyway, I have a question.

[ It's... one that she doesn't really want to ask but is, y'know, trying to make an effort to not completely ignore.

She's trying and therefore no one can criticize her.
]

What are birthdays like, where you're from?
We're all from different worlds and cultures and whatnot.
I just figured it'd be cool to learn about what other people might do.
Maybe I'd like something more than the typical cake and candles that happen where I'm from.

Oh hey! That's great! I'm glad you're okay.

You seem to be from the same place I am, so I don't have much to offer that's different on birthday celebrations. But that's a cool topic! I'm curious too.

Yeah, I didn't even necessarily believe in other planets being populated until I came here. And somehow I definitely never imagined so many of them having humans. It's pretty fascinating. I wonder where all these planets are relative to ours. Maybe they're not even in the same universe.

I am glad you are well.
Though I think it is strange that you might bring this subject up in particular.
Mayhap there is a date one should be aware of?

... That is five days from now, correct?
I am still learning the new names of these Moons, I am afraid.

Nevertheless, provided that assumption is correct, that does not give one terribly long to work with.
Provided they wished to do more than... "cake and candles," as it were.

To be frank, I've never been one for celebrating myself, so I can only speak to what I've seen or heard of others doing, for the most part. And even then, it seemed to vary considerably depending on the social standing of the person in question and their family. Commoners would likely have a simply affairs, a gathering of friends and family, with some nice food as a treat and perhaps a few simple gifts. Nobles were more prone to more extravagant affairs, such as hosting a feast or a ball, or perhaps both. And the king, well, in the past the king's birthday would be essentially declared a festival to be held in his honor, with whatever entertainments he wished to indulge in.

Though I believe that really, you should simply do something you would enjoy, if you don't wish to do the same sort of thing you've always done before.

In that case perhaps select a bar or restaurant you're fond of, invite your friends, and simply make an evening of it. Or you could do the same at home, of course, but then food would have to be prepared or otherwise provided. But in either case, it would simply be a time to gather together and converse and generally enjoy each others' company.

We never celebrated such things in my House.

Well, once we almost had a party for my brother, when he was very small. But the Matron Mother decided it was in poor taste and called it off.

If the people involved are unwilling to treat you as special the rest of the time, I do not see how requiring them to do so for no reason will accomplish much.

There are better things to celebrate than "you managed to survive being born," surely?

Birthdays back where I'm from would probably line up with yours, based on what you're saying. You know, cake and candles and all that. Although there were some weird ones the past few years... My cousin's latest birthday, we raided the undercover hideout of an evil organization. Not my idea of a good party, but honestly it was totally her style. She loved it.

But my family just does stuff like that. Weird stuff that's way too dangerous. I had a birthday last month and I didn't do anything for it. It was great, because I didn't have to prepare anything. But the month before that, I threw a party for my friend Rei. That was pretty great too, mostly because she'd never had one before. Because of that, I arranged a lot of typical things from what I'm used to so she'd have that experience, but I also got a bunch of disposable cameras for something extra.

Oh, but the best move I made was having it be a potluck. I saved a lot on food.

I feel like there's a lot of people here who would, really. I mean, I don't get it, but I am used to it.

But yeah, thanks, it did work out well! I don't know if I'm much of a cook either. I mean, simple stuff is okay. But I've never tried much; too much effort.

I'm glad you're feeling better.

Where I'm from, you usually provide or pay for the food yourself for your own birthday get-together, and it's rude to attend a birthday get-together like that without bringing a gift of some sort when the host is paying for your food and drink.

Is yours coming up soon?

I have to admit, it's made me curious too.
And though it's a bit early, tanti auguri as well. I hope you have a good birthday.

It's usually just a small gathering with friends and family in Japan. Some birthdays have special meanings, others don't. It's mostly kids that get birthday parties, though.

I didn't see you were unwell, but I'm glad you're doing better.

Oh yea? Where from? I'm from Sendai, in Miyagi.

Can't say I've gone drinking on my birthday, or at all, back home. Not old enough to. I can here though.

[And he had, a bit, during prom.]
