Sorry, Sandalphon, whatever Shrike may have said in reply is muffled by the fact that he's climbed halfway into a hole in the rock. Thankfully though, after a moment or two of poking around in there, he crawls back out. He's definitely got a few streaks of dust and dirt on him, but he's also grinning.

"There were crystals!"

He holds out his hands to show, sure enough, several chunks of what's probably quartz crystal. After a moment's pause, though, he suddenly remembers to add:

"I can use them for magecraft."

Specifically, making mage lights, one of the handful of spells he knows how to do.

Magecraft...?

[ the pointed ears was enough for sandalphon to notice he wasn't human, but this was definitely new. he raised an eyebrow, nodding. at least shrike had a reason to dig hid way into the hole. but instead of reprimanding him for not keeping dirt off him... ]

Would that be enough for one spell, or would you need more?

Technically, Shrike is human, just with some fay parentage, but that's probably not a topic to get into right now. In any case, Shrike glances down at the crystals in his hands at the question, turning them over and taking a good look now that he can see them in proper lighting.

"Oh, umm..." Some of the crystals he'd picked up are badly cracked or flawed, but there's still a couple of nice, mostly clear intact ones. "I think these are enough. I should get some string and charcoal though--or ink and a pen if I can use paper, I guess. And maybe a good branch too..."

That, and a nice, heavy stone to use to shatter one or two of the flawed crystals; even a sharp knife won't scratch the ones he's enchanting, but the sharp edge of a freshly fractured crystal of the same type can be used to etch into them. Suffice it to say, if he has his way, he's going to be busy this weekend...

[ if he needs charcoal...

sandalphon starts picking up dried sticks and leaves, as if trying to find materials for a fire. when he feels like he has enough, he turns to his partner with an unreadable look. ]

Don't tell anyone I can do this, alright?

[ he doesn't wait for a reply. his red and white wings start shimmering, and within seconds of it starting, the bundle of sticks and leaves become charcoal in his hands. when done, he hands it off to shrike with a smile. ]

Here you are.

To say Shrike is impressed is an understatement, he's clearly pretty astonished at the display, even as he quickly tucks the crystals into a pocket in order to take the charcoal sticks from Sandalphon.

"Was that magecraft...?"

Or was it some other, more innate kind of magic?

[dejabrewed]

Something similar to magic.

[ It was more his innate control over the elements, but he's not about to reveal that, of course. but at least the boy's shock was something fun to see. ]

Shrike's never seen someone do magic like that! Least of all his traveling companion!

"I didn't know you could do magic!"

You know, other than the appearing and disappearing wings thing. But there's different kinds of magical abilities or something, okay?

I can, to an extent. [ well, it was more manipulating the rules of nature but again, that would require explanations. ]

But even so, that's all you need, right?

[fayblood]

"Ah--yeah."

It's definitely plenty to work with for the handful of enchantments he wants to try to do. There's still one or two other materials he needs, but those are things that are easy to come by, at least.

[dejabrewed]

Then do you want to start heading back?

[ he stretches his wings. he's not exactly wanting to go back, but also he did have to return shrike to their inn. ]

"I--do you want to?"

He will need to get to work on his magecraft projects at some point, but a few hours or so shouldn't make any difference. And he's kind of enjoying spending this time with Sandalphon.
