The whole wishing thing had been a neat idea, but Shrike hadn't expected anything to come of it, and definitely not what actually did. Still, he's not the type to waste a gift, so after some coordination (probably not without a bit of help) here he is, and here are Sandalphon, Dimitri, and Ryner.

The only person who knows everyone else well is, well, Shrike. Hopefully this won't be too awkward?

[Swimwear]

Somehow, at some point, a solution was found to balance Shrike's shyness with his interest in swimming and, well, being able to enjoy the beach. Namely, some full body-covering wetsuit-style swimwear, and a diving mask-style googles that cover most of his face. Granted, keeping the googles on all the time might look a little weird, but then again, Shrike still looks like he's not even a teenager yet, so he can probably get away with it. Kids and their weird quirks, right?

Still, that leaves his ears uncovered and in plain view, which is probably why he's still hovering a little nervously around the door of the bungalow instead of heading outside just yet.


[Swimming Time!]

Sooner or later Shrike does get in the water though, and once he does, well, he's having a blast. His swimming technique is basically nonexistant, but he makes up for that lack in sheer strength, stamina, and childish enthusiasm. There's probably far more flailing and splashing than is strictly necessary, but he seems to be having fun, at least.

Though, speaking of childish, it doesn't take him long at all do discover just how handy swim goggles are for seeing things underwater, and thus swimming underwater. It may take some time for him to get the hang of swimming deep enough not to disturb the surface, but once he does, he's totally trying to sneak up on people and splash them from behind.

[Fish Out of Water]

It's probably a good thing the vouchers Shrike received for this trip were both free and all-inclusive, because everything here is definitely far fancier (and more expensive) than he would ever imagine choosing himself. Case in point: he's currently staring with a very confused look (well, if you could see it under his hood, which he's wearing again now that he's out of the water) at some of the evening's very fancy food.

"Which one?"

There are several available dishes here that aren't necessarily stuff most people eat on a regular basis, after all. Fancy stuff for a fancy resort, Ryner supposes, though he's been to enough parties in his life (even ignoring Too Many Proms) to know generally what he's looking at, at least.

"That one with the red balls on top," Shrike says, pointing to what's clearly an ikura sushi roll, to someone who knows such things.

Obviously Shrike does not, especially since his access to saltwater seafood prior to arriving in Johto was basically nonexistent.

Ah, that one. Ryner doesn't know the exact name of it, but he has an idea of what it is.

(Nominally, anyway. Like hell he has any idea where what it's supposed to be made of is sourced around these parts.)

"Ahh, that's some kind of sushi. It's got fish, seaweed, rice, and the red things I'm pretty sure are fish eggs?"

"Oh."

Let the kid consider that a moment. Leaving aside the question of where edible eggs around here come from, the idea of eating eggs from fish is fairly novel to him.

"Is it good?"

"Depends how much you like fish, I guess, but I think it's all right."

...That's probably too vague. Hmm. Maybe if he describes it a bit...?

"For sushi, they tend to try to cut the fish in a way that brings out its flavor, I think. And the fish eggs are a little bit salty, but not a lot?"

This would probably be easier if Marian was here, but oh well.

"I don't think I've had much fish..."

His tone is more thoughtful than reluctant, though. After all, some of the other times he's tried new, unfamiliar things here have ended up being quite good.

Swimwear - oh god how did weeks pass like this

Frankly, not only kids and their quirks, but Pokemon trainers and their quirks. Dimitri has more than once noticed other trainers dressed in quite peculiar manners, even when far away from where it would be appropriate or fitting.

He's not saying he seems to get being challenged by scuba divers while on the boardwalks of these islands, but, well, it sure seems to be happening.

But he is enjoying himself, for the most part, and, for all his many scars, doesn't seem to be nearly as nervous as he steps forward prepared to go enjoy the beach and everything. However, seeing Shrike there hesitating at the doorway out.

"Shrike? Did you forget something?" With how suited up the youth is, Dimitri can't think of anything, but still.

"Huh?"

Sorry, Shrike wasn't really paying attention, and it takes him a moment to register someone's speaking to him.

"Oh, um, I don't think so..."

It's just, well. There's nothing to be done about his ears sticking out all obvious-like.

Hm. Dimitri looks over Shrike, trying to see if there's anything visible to him that might make him so nervous. But considering he is not the kind of man who pays too much attention to ears even on a good day, Shrike's own being visible just... don't click for him.

"Then, shall we go to the beach?" he suggests after a moment. "I have heard that the water is exceptionally clear here, and the effect is stunning when you are underwater."

They're a bit bigger than normal human-shaped ears, granted, but, well, not excessively so. Enough that's noticeable to anyone looking, but definitely not glaring in your face knife-ears sticking out from his head.

Thankfully.

Shrike still worries about it, though, but on the other hand, it's clear Dimitri's ready to go out anyway.

"Uh, okay."

He doesn't want to get left behind, either!

Well, things seem to be fine, Dimitri supposes, and he holds open the door for Shrike so that the two of them can go through. Still, he cannot help but get the idea that Shrike is still somewhat nervous.

Granted, Shrike often seems nervous about little things, especially when in public, but that's besides the point.

"Have you thought about gaining any new companions while you are here?" Dimitri asks while they walk, looking over his own waterproof belt where his pokeballs are. He's made sure to bring some of his more tropical pokemon out for this excursion, with the appropriate wear for it all. "I am rather content with my own, of course... especially since others seem to find it amusing to get me eggs to raise."

Sometimes Shrike is just nervous in general, sometimes the source of his nervousness could probably be discovered simply by asking. Either way though, it helps having someone he knows and trusts around, at least.

"I don't know..." He hasn't really given it much thought, but is attitude towards catching new Pokémon is largely the same regardless. "I already have more than I can bring with me at once..."

Eight. He has eight. That's including his Hisui starter, at that.

[ sandalphon isn't one for the beach, but because this was shrike who had invited him, he couldn't exactly say no. it would've broken shrike's heart, and it would've even made sandalphon regret not taking the chance when it was presented. so now, here he was in full swimsuit attire, and just... looking around. he's not even sure what to do, but it wouldn't be seen in his face. ]

What do humans even do on the beach anyways...? [ he's only been at the beach to work, not to play!]

ii. resort gorgeous

[ even if shrike was the one who invited him, sandalphon had a major disadvantage. it was most likely one that came with the territory of meeting new people, but these were people thst shrike held in at least some regard-- after all, you don't invite people to your party if you don't see any value in them.

he can try to socialize, that was easy, but that wasn't exactly what he wanted out of being cordial. he didn't want to be rude, but also... ]

Whoever's idea it was to get Shrike what amounted to a kid-sized wetsuit had been a brilliant idea. Between that, and the fact that the resort is so exclusive there aren't many other guests around, he's almost comfortable spending some time on the beach. Almost.

Still, it does mean he's actually out and doing things, and naturally upon spotting Sandalphon just standing there, Shrike heads right over.

"You can go swimming!"

One guess what he plans to do.

I think I'm fine, thank you.

[ sandalphon knows how to swim, sure, but that doesn't mean he'd like to. but at least shrike was having fun, and that's what mattered most to him. ]

But you look excited to go in. Don't let me hold you back.

"You don't want to?"

He's maybe a little confused, seeing as how Sandalphon was just asking what people do at beaches... And, y'know, is wearing swimwear, himself.

Not right now, at least. [ a shrug. he only dressed in his swimwear as to not bring any attention to himself, but that's beside the point. ] I just wanted to know more before I settled on an activity.

"Oh."

Shrike considers that for a moment.

"I think some people play in the sand? Or just sit on the beach..."

He clearly doesn't understand the appeal of that last option.

Ah, as a manner of people watching. I see. [ unlike shrike, sandalphon sees the appeal immediately. ] What are you going to do now, Shrike?

[At least with Dimitri, there is some passing familiarity - they did have a conversation on the airships once upon a time some months ago. But Dimitri has to admit that he doesn't know Sandalphon nearly as well as, say, Shrike.]

[But this is a good opportunity to change that, isn't it?]

[The commentary has Dimitri chuckles a bit, and he adjusts the two dogs he has in his arm - one a very tiny little Furfrou, and the other one of the Hisuian Growlithes he brought back with him from the past.]

One could make that statement for any gathering of those of us not native to these lands, couldn't they?

[ sandalphon really couldn't argue that, and it causes the angel to chuckle. ]

I suppose that's a fair assessment. It's not like Shrike talks to many people, as well. [ it was a miracle that he's managed to open him up like this, too. ] When I saw he had won four tickets, I couldn't help but wonder who else could he have invited.

[ can't blame him. ]

Indeed, I have also noticed he is rather reserved... Some are like that and grow from it, while others stay that way well into the future. I can think of someone who actually had a rather opposite development, actually...

...Well, somewhat. [Felix is still so popular... Dimitri shakes his head to snap out of it before he gets lost in the Felix rabbit hole.]

At any rate, I had heard that you and Shrike were traveling together, so I was not as surprised to see you, but Rhyner wasn't quite as expected! How did you and Shrike take to traveling together, if I may ask? I do not believe I ever had a chance to ask Shrike.

[ he sagely nods. at least dimitri understands shrike. it was a nice feeling, honestly, given that it was often him who was around the teenager most of the time. ]

Yes, he and I travel together. It was… an interesting experience at first, however I grew to appreciate his presence during our travels.

[ he will never admit to his inability to take care of himself. ]

I’ve never met Ryner; however now might be my chance.

He is a clever and nice boy, I agree. I am glad that the two of you have found company together! It takes a weight off of my shoulders, although I know he is perfectly capable on his own.

[But sometimes you need something else that isn't just... capable.]

He and Sion run a gym together, if you were not aware of that already! He is certainly an interesting young man.
