No, she was here to show off her shiny badge and her 'new pokemon', her recently evolved Graveler. Look at him, her boy has gotten so big and he's grown so many arms. He can punch so much now.]

Are all evolutions like this? This guy made the gym a piece of cake.

[She has type advantage, she has STRONK mons, she's ready.

Though she turned to look at her Graveler. Mumbling.]

I wonder why he evolved before my first pokemon...

What's your first Pokemon? Nearly all of mine need some sort of item, so maybe yours does.

Rhyhorn...Apparently, I need something called a Protector to evolve him fully. But he's not changed once, lazy... [She huffed, then moved her camera to show a Rhyhorn. Happily snoozing away in the sun.]

Yeah, he won't until you get the Protector and do whatever it is you need to do for him to evolve. It's annoying, but that's just how it is.

From here on out, though, you'll have to make a decision if you want him to evolve again.

They always make the Pokemon stronger, but there's still various types they're weak against. I think Rock types are weak to Water, if I remember right.

The evolutions don't seem to work on a strict timetable, either. Maybe your Graveler felt ready to evolve and your starter didn't? There could be a lot of reasons.

[ caves and tunnels were— neat? but kind of stuffy! they've been here for days trying to get out of dead ends and onto a proper path, and luckily! if gabi sprang ahead, falco would have a map to always steer them. at a resting point (just a day away from fresh air and route 33), falco flips through his handbook to educate themselves a little more on gabi's team. his shiiontic is out to serve as a dull glowing light for seeing and reading. even though it, like . . . always tries to put them to sleep. poppie is present to wack the pokemon's mushroom cap if he starts getting ideas. ]

Looks like Rhyhorn need more time to evolve— and some of them don't. [ he glances up at his now very large, majestic penguin. when they had first started out, poppie would fit in his lap. now . . . he fits in poppie's, surely. ] Poppie's evolved twice already.

[It really was lucky these pokegears had a signal under all the rock. Gabi had given up questioning the technology here. It was weird, but it was cool, that was enough of an explanation for her. Who cared when people could right dragons?

She was so excited. Her first gym battle had gone so well, the next one would probably go well. Even if the tournament had gone horribly, it'd still worked out. Gabi had been called brave for trying so soon... Okay, she was being optimistic.

She shrugged, moving her flashlight to look back at him, then turned again to keep walking.]

The pokedex says he's strong enough... He just hasn't.

Geodude evolves at level 25. Rhyhorn evolves at level 42. Some Pokemon are just different like that.

You can looks this stuff up in your Pokedex, you know.

Each species has its own prerequisites for evolution. It might be that your starter evolves at a higher level, or in a manner that does not involve levels at all. Trades or stones, for example.

[But that's not the most important part, as far as Cecil is concerned.]

Still, it's nice to finally have a team strong enough to start earning badges, is it not?

I was training in Violet for so long...Then I won by a landslide.

[If Gabi was a smarter person, that'd have been a pun. But no, she wasn't trying.]

[The pun may not have been deliberate, but combined with that enthusiasm, it still gets a laugh out of Cecil.]

Ah, the sweet taste of of an easy victory! My own successful attempt was not nearly so decisive, but I was certainly glad to finally have the chance to move on.

Your friend is most impressive. From what I have seen, most evolutions are stronger and more intimidating than the one they evolved from. I would say all, but I have not seen all of them. My first Pokemon was a small canine that was more bark than bite. When she evolved, she's more than prepared to attack if needed.

It is possible that your first Pokemon hasn't reached enough experience to be able to evolve.

Yes, they will. Every evolution I have seen has gotten bigger and be more powerful.

Perhaps. There might be another reason that he has not chosen to evolve. He might be strong enough, but may not be sure if that is what is best at the moment. It may not be because he is lazy.
