_{[To illustrate he makes an X across his chest with a finger. Maurice remembers once when he broke the side mirror off his mom's truck and was absolutely sure that it was going to be the end of the world.]}

[Asriel shifts, almost curling into himself more. The Rockruff that has become so cozy with him rests its tail on his shoulder, almost like an offering to use it to dry his eyes.]

I...I don't have a SOUL, back home. And, without it, I...I c-can't keep this form, and...I become mean, and I can't feel love, or anything, and I...

[He's suddenly grateful for that tail, because it comes up to brush at one of his eyes.]

I-I'll hurt people...i-if I go back to being that...and my D-Dad'll get hurt, too! And I don't w-wanna hurt anybody...

<sub>[Okay this is more serious than a broken mirror. While Maurice and the rest of the Dogtrot Murder may have souls that are in various states of disrepair, none of them are missing theirs. He tries to understand and to think of anything that could possibly comfort this poor fluffy kid.]

[He glances back to Gracie for a moment, then returns his attention to Asriel.]</sub>

Well...you aren't back home, right? Maybe it's different here. There is a lot of weird stuff goin' on outside. How do you feel right now?

_{[Maurice tries to think back on today and remember if he saw a larger white fluffy creature. Could that be Asriel's dad?]}

_{[Even though his heart's stopped beating BOY DOES IT HURT. Jeez, this poor kid. He wished he understood the threat, he wished he knew the right thing to say. Maurice scrambled a little before reaching out to put a hand on the boy's shoulder--to show that at least HE wasn't afraid of Asriel the Terrible or whatever he was afraid he was going to turn into.]}

_{[Dee's words echo in his head. They could go home in the blink of an eye. He shakes himself. No sir he was NOT going down that mental path.]}

[It's pretty hard to know what's right to say and what isn't. Asriel sure doesn't know, he's never known. But, at least he doesn't shrink back at the hand on his shoulder, just...looks up, a little bewildered. You tell someone you might turn into a soulless, evil creature and they comfort you? He's...only had that happen to him once.]

As long as you can feel somethin', you're still you, yeah? It'd be a shame to waste it.

_{[Maurice wishes he'd spent more time doing...well, anything before getting turned into a vampire.]}

[He's right. Asriel knows this, and yet he still finds himself pressing his forehead to his knees. The Rockruff beside him moves so it can try to press its snout between then, pawing gently at the little monster.]

But...if it goes away...then, I'll change, and everyone...everyone'll be sad 'n hurt...

_{[When Asriel's head dips, he moves his hand to the boy's head, ruffling his ears. He hopes that isn't like. Insulting to monsters.]}

Well, if that happens, I'll just fight you and make you behave. How about that? I dunno if you've noticed, but I'm a pretty tough dude.

_{[Maurice hopes Asriel was not here when he made that post screaming about a ghost frog and crying.]}

[Nah, you're good Maurice. Still, he makes a soft sound not unlike a groan, as if the idea of fighting other people is one he's so very tired of.]

But...I don't wanna have to FIGHT you...you're nice...

Well, I don't wanna fight you either. You're nice. But we don't have to worry about that unless it happens. Which it don't seem to be right now.

_{[He looks to the Rockruff for some kind of back-up.]}

Hey. You wanna explore this cool cave with me?

[The Rockruff looks back at him, eyes wide and sad. He'll do what he can, buddy, but he's only a small rock dog.

Asriel pauses, making sure to wipe his eyes dry-ish.] I...I guess we could...for a little while...

[toothaches]

<sub>[The dead man hesitates. This could end so poorly...or it could end awesomely.]

[He decides to take the chance.]

[Maurice takes his hand away from the boy's head in favor of lifting him by his armpits high above his head to situate him on his shoulders in one fluid motion.]</sub>

I'll do all the walking, don't worry. Hang on?

[HANGING ON HE IS DEFINITELY HANGING ON. The Pokemon all circle him curiously, and the Rockruff yips in surprise, but none of them seem angry or anything. So far Maurice has been kind to their trainer, so they trust him.]

Whoa...!

_{[Maurice is very happy that didn't decide to just...bite his skull out of surprise over being picked up. He knows nothing about the kind of fluffy monster he is.]}

_{[And, minding the curious hovering Pokemon, Maurice sets out into the cave. Great stalagmites and rippling rock formations pass them by. It's possible to hear the distant murmur of Weird Weekend chaos reverberating in the distance.]}

Man...the last time my buddy and I went through a cave it was so hard to see. I'd almost forgotten what night vision was like. What about you? I haven't talked to any other kind of monster besides vampires...and a werewolf I guess. But I never saw him change so they could have just been pulling my leg.
