The hills are alive with the sound of… sneezing?

It’s almost a week into January, and trainers may have started to get nervous about the lack of Snorunts. Whether you’re excited to see them, or just want the metaphorical bomb to drop and be over with - the wait is finally done. Snorunts have started to make their way into town.

But instead of fortunes, what they have to give right now is coughs, bleary eyes, and sad little flops sideways into the snow. They’re not alone, either: every once in a while you’ll see an equally sick Glalie or Froslass. (Be careful - a sneezing Glalie is basically a wrecking ball waiting to happen, prone to launching itself backward! And if you’ve been struck by an odd spurt of bad luck, maybe you’ll be right in the way when it does…)

In cities across Johto and Kanto, and in field camps in between, Nurse Joys are scrambling to treat the miserable Ice Pokemon. But they’re direly in need of more helping hands. Will you pitch in?

Hard to say if it's them or not. My own Glalie didn't provide any answers when it was a Snorunt. Just ate some of my research papers.

But if they are causing the weird luck, I wouldn't be surprised. It's not the oddest or the worst thing a Pokemon could control. Pokemon tend to react differently to humans and Snorunt are no different.

Uh oh. Were you able to remember what you wrote down?

[He sighs and nods.]

Yeah, that’s a good point. All my Pokemon react differently to things.

Not all of it, so I'll have to conduct some of the research again. It's fine. Just slightly annoying but it gives me something to do during the quiet months.

[Thankfully, Jotaro doesn't have to worry about money or research grants in this place. He doesn't even have to worry about publishing - the research is all for fun and he can do it at his own pace.]

Mmm... Individuals comprehending things differently from others. Species having different understandings to others. So I wouldn't blame the Snorunt if they are making the weird luck intentionally... All we can do is do our best to help them and try understand that we are doing so. [He glances at Radley and snorts.] Even if it does cause us to slip on the ice on occasion.

[crystalmaster]

Well, as long as you’re cool with it. What are you researching?

[He nods.]

Yeah…. It probably won’t be the last weird thing to happen, the way things are going.

Osmoregulation in water Pokemon. I'm a marine biologist at home and I was fascinated to discover that all Pokemon here in this world are able to live in both fresh water and salt water. I wanted to see if they had the same mechanisms for osmotic regulation or if they all evolved independently.

[Despite his appearance... Jotaro is a nerd.]

Probably not. New Year, new load of bullshit.

Huh. You know, I hadn't thought about that, them living in both, but that really is pretty fascinating. Did you come to any conclusions?

[He laughs at that.]

Yeah, pretty much.

[phdepression]

No, not yet. I have a few theories but nothing quite set in stone just yet. Pokemon are mysterious creatures.

[It may be as fruitless as trying to figure out where eggs come from but Jotaro's going to keep trying.]

So you a trainer?

[crystalmaster]

They sure are. That’s part of the fun, though.

Nah, I’m a breeder. Mainly of Eevees, but sometimes kitties too.

[phdepression]

[Jotaro snorts.] I suppose it is.

[At the mention of kitties, Vivian the Espurr raises her head, giving a small 'nyah?' at that. She's clearly asking if Radley also breeds Espurrs like her.]

Same. No sort of Pokemon in particular though. Just whatever people ask of me or whatever my Pokemon want to produce.

[Radley chuckles and then looks to Vivian with a smile.]

I’ve got a family of Skitties and Espurrs.

[phdepression]

[Vivian gives a bright and happy smile at that. Good. There should definitely be more Espurrs in the world. Jotaro smirks and affectionately pats the Espurr on the head.]

Do you keep all the Pokemon you breed? [Jotaro asks, curious. He hasn't talked to a lot of breeders.] Or do you give them away?

I sell eggs, but any that hatch in my care stay with me.

[Evie chirps happily. She loves having so many friends and family!]

Fair enough. I mostly sell mine too. I rarely keep any unless I need to.

[Vivian's not sure if she'd like have more Espurrs around. On one hand, it would be fun but she also likes being the lone Espurr princess of Jotaro's team. She simply 'nyas' and goes back to focusing on keeping the sleigh ride smooth.]

Do you find being a breeder satisfying? It feels aimless to me at times...

I like it, except when I'm trying to get Shinies.

[He chuckles.]

My only Shinies have been gifts.

I see... It's the same for me. My shiny Cyndaquil came last Christmas and my shiny Basculin was a gift. I've never seen a shiny Pokemon hatch. It really is that rare.

Must be a pain to try breed one. Feels like you need a lot of luck. [Luck he doesn't really have.]

That's pretty cool you've got them.

[He laughs.]

Yeah, luck isn't very good odds.

Luck isn't very good odds. [Jotaro repeats, snorting despite himself.] Indeed.

I'm happy with not having Shinies. But it is cool having them... the ones I have are nice. I do like the sparkle shinies give too.

I really wonder what causes Shinies, especially that shine.

Well, the probability of shiny Pokemon increases with having shiny parents. By that logic and remembering that Pokemon have DNA, it stands to reason shininess is a genetic recessive trait. The shiny phenomenon is likely a DNA mutation, not dissimilar to albinoism.

That's just a theory but it's a heavily supported one.

[No, he will not apologise for nerding out.]

[Radley listens, blinks, and smiles.]

Hey, makes sense to me! It probably is something like that.

[Evie chirps. She's not fully sure what was just said, but Radley likes it, so she's sure it makes sense too!]

[Vivian instead huffs, not sure what was said but absolutely unhappy that she doesn't know what's going on. She should always know what's going on, JoJo. Jotaro doesn't explain himself to the Pokemon but he does pat Vivian on the head to placate her.]

Probably. But who knows. Maybe I'll talk to Professor Elm once this debacle is over. He is the Pokemon expert on eggs and breeding. It'd be something to do.

Sounds like a good idea. Have you ever talked to him before? I was thinking he was usually pretty scarce.

Never. Even though I've been around for a few months now helping out with the new Petal Gym in New Bark. Not that I'm surprised... Research can be busy work. You can either be stuck in your research or off presenting your research.

[crystalmaster]

Yeah, I guess that makes sense. I've tried to talk to him before and I haven't had any luck either.

What's the gym like? I'm kinda surprised there's a gym there now, especially if they still don't have a Pokemon Center. Or has that changed now too? I haven't got out to New Bark in a while.

You'll see when we get there. [Jotaro's at first content to leave it at that. However, Vivian isn't, knowing perfectly well her trainer is being rude. She gives a small, incessant 'nyehhhh' at Jotaro. Jotaro rolls his eyes but after a moment he continues.]

There's no Pokemon Center but it's a big gym. Emporio built it with the intention of training newcomers how to survive the various terrains in Johto and Kanto. It's a survival course so the gym actually is more built into the forest that stretches between New Bark Town and Route 29.
