Josuke Higashikata Meets Pokémon (part 1)

Whoa whoa whoa hey, don't touch the hair - and you better explain what I'm doing here, now!

[Josuke is practically being forced out the door of "Mom"'s house not only by the mystery woman, but also by the Pansage riding his shoulders eagerly waving and pointing at everything in sight. He's sure never met her before, and it's really freaking him out. He thought his real mom could get crazy.

The door gets slammed on him before he realizes he's outside.]

Oh, now this is just great.

[He's gonna be strolling around looking for answers. You look out of place, maybe you know something?]

[Video...?]

[That... is the side of a face. Someone seems to have not noticed the lens... or maybe not.]

Apparently this thing I got is a phone, not just a camera? Fancy stuff. Guess the first question is, who am I even calling? Wouldn't think it'd make one with no number.

[He'd been poking around, and found some things that looked phone-like, so he gave it a try. It is acting odd, but maybe it's like a Stand or something. There could totally be a phone stand.]

Wouldn't be right to just say that, though. Name's Josuke Higashikata. A little confused by all this, but I guess I've got time to work it out since it doesn't look like I'm going anywhere anytime soon.

Got a song stuck in my head something fierce, though.

[He finally moves the Gear away from the side of his head, giving everyone a really clear look at his pompadour and face, finally. He's managed to get Yes to calm down, at least, but he also forgot to hang up.]

Wait, maybe...

[He's taking off his jacket on camera. It's midsummer so sure, that makes some sense, but the way he's looking over it might seem more like there might be a problem with it than just looking at it strangely.]

Ohhh, that's pretty cool though!

Heheh, nice to meet you too! I'm Ochako Uraraka! So are you feeling okay then?

A... yeah. It was just something that doesn't really need to be working.

[At least not right now.]

Oh, okay! I guess I sorta know how you feel - for some reason, I can't use my Quirk, but I haven't really run into a situation where I'd really need it yet. It doesn't seem like a lot of people I've met have anything like that though missing, it's weird.

[She's used to EVERYONE having super powers]

Your... Quirk? What's that supposed to be?

[If "Quirk" were the name of a Stand, she wouldn't have said "my", which suggests that it's something completely different.]

[Sounds like he really doesn't know either - will she ever find anyone from her world?]

Well, it's like - a special ability! I guess you could even call it a super power. Normally I could make anything completely weightless just by touching it - [She shows her hands, which have little soft pads at the ends of her fingers] -but it doesn't seem to work here.

[That does look a little odd. Maybe it's a little like Love Deluxe, so...]

That's gotta be useful sometime, and it does sound a little like a Stand - that's the kind of ability I've got. Not everyone's got one, something about needing enough fighting spirit to be able to use it - and the people that don't can't see Stands.

[He usually doesn't talk about them with non-Stand Users for that reason.]

Mine's "Crazy Diamond". It can 'fix' anything it touches, bringing it back to some way it used to be. With a couple exceptions.

A friend of mine has a Stand that can put sounds on objects, and that's where I thought the music was coming from.

Ohhh... yeah, almost everyone I know has a Quirk! Whether or not they have fighting spirit. [She laughs a bit - she can't imagine her mom or dad getting into a fight] But the people who do can be heroes!

[Fist pump - heroes are exciting stuff]

Wow, you can fix anything? That sounds like a really powerful Qu- Stand, you called it?

Huh, you think that friend is here?

Hero, huh? Guess I am a little like that.

[He didn't think of his largely self-declared and not public status as a guardian of Morioh quite that way - and the fact that he's thinking about it now... reminds him of his grandpa.]

But no, not anything. Most importantly, I can't bring back someone that's died - their body'll come back together, but...

[And the way he says it is a pretty clear implication that people died. He'll field the rest of Uraraka's questions as cheerfully as he can, though.]

But yeah, "Stand". A lot of them look like people that appear standing next to you - that's where I heard the name came from.

At first I thought he could be, but... seeing how small this town is, we'd have found each other already, so I guess not.

A, ah... [Right, she'd mostly been thinking of "fixing" material objects, not living things so... she wasn't sure if it was disappointing or relieving to hear he couldn't reverse death itself, but mostly just sad since it sounds like he knows this from experience...]

Oh, so like - it manifests as a partner? [That explains his thing about "only other people with Stands can see them" thing]

Hmm, that's true. I mean, it seems like most of the new people arrived here.

Yeah, exactly. I mean, some don't but that's the way it usually goes.

[Love Deluxe, for one.]

As for new people... if this is happening other places, too, how'd we know? Haven't exactly been out of this town yet.

Hmm, well, I guess just from the messages on the PokeGear? Most of the new people seem to be here... I've been checking to make sure I don't miss any of my friends showing up either!

Well, you'll find each other if they show up.

[He'd do the same thing for any of his friends. ...okay, not that one guy, but he doesn't really count as a friend.]

Yeah, I'm sure! Though... I guess that means it's just me for now, huh?

[Though she smiles and pats her bag, pulling out a pokeball - with a button press, a swablu pops out, fluttering up and landing on her head]

Well, me and Chiru, anyway!

[That bird looks so fluffy.]

She sure looks like a cute one, I'll give her that.

I got some kinda broccoli-ish monkey. [Said Pansage is more than a little independent, and has been wandering around. He comes racing when Josuke motions him over, though.]

Wouldn't have thought those capsules were for handling live animals, though...

Right? [She is v. proud to have a cute pokemon.]

Ah, it kind of does look like broccoli...

[She looks down at the now-empty pokeball]

Yeah, it's pretty mysterious, isn't it? I guess it makes it easier to travel with them - I hear people have whole teams of pokemon!

[That sounds vaguely familiar.]

If that's true it sounds like there's gotta be some reason to have 'em around...

Yeah, I think it's like... people compete as the travel? Oh, and defending against wild pokemon too!

So, wait, like having them fight each other? That's kinda cruel, isn't it?

Hmmm, yeah, maybe? I mean, I've only done a little myself against wild pokemon. But I think it's more like, a martial arts tournament sort of thing? It's definitely not to the death or anything!

Still, you'd think you'd bother to check whether the pokémon are okay with it...

[Josuke's Pansage seems eager to fight, though.]

...although I guess that's a "yes" from Yes.

Hmm, Chiru was pretty excited to face off against the wild ones at least?

[The fluffy bird peeps excitedly. It's very proud of how well it did]

I think they like competing!

With how excited Yes seems about it, that might be right.

[The young Pokémon is clearly, and excitedly, asking for one, after all...]

Oh! Do you think maybe they'd like to try out a battle then? We could try out a short one.

[Chiru gives a curious coo - she's not as competitive, but she's game apparently]

Well, you've had a bit of a headstart... plus, we've gotta make sure we can actually get to another town first either way, don't we?

[Since... this one is kinda... empty. There might not be enough resources here to recover from such a thing.

Also he gets the feeling Chiru would win even if they did have the same amount of experience.]

Oh, that's true... I wonder if someone's done something about that elephant monster that's supposed to be out on the route? It really is pretty inconvenient if we're all just stuck here...
