8th Recipe [Video, Goldenrod City]

[There's no setup, no artful pan of anything to begin this video with, just Jane pulling her hand back as she turns her 'gear on. It's propped up on a table with various papers scattered around - the exact contents aren't clear, but the general idea of notes and sketches are visible enough.]

I have a quick question for you all this evening. What sort of Normal type Pokemon are you all familiar with? I've...just been wondering lately if you could really call Whitney's gym Normal type gym if most of her team is apparently dual-typed, or...turned out to be the Fairy type! Ah...well, anyway, what's your experiences with plain old Normal types? Are there some you'd favor over others? I'd like to hear about them.

Ahh, well, there's a story about the Fairy-type you mentioned, at least... The Clefairy and Snubbull lines used to be Normal, up until a couple years ago.

Oh! The Clefaries I knew about, but since I'd never heard of Snubbull before coming here, I had no idea it had been different before, too.

[But still, now she knows that her options have been narrowed even further.]

Yeah. I'm pretty sure those are the only two lines that had a complete change? ...Maybe Togepi might've, too, I don't actually know, Yohki's been a Togekiss since before that, so he just had the Normal half changed to Fairy and kept the Flying...

But then you've got a bunch like Jigglypuff's line, which just added Fairy and kept Normal too...

[Fairy Retcon Day was certainly a thing he'll never forget.]

...Ahh, in terms of Pokemon that are still pure Normal, though, I've raised a couple of them. Happy's an Audino - well, I didn't raise her from the start, she kind of ended up coming to me when her trainer left - and Elden's a Lopunny.

Now that's certainly odd. Why would certain Pokemon change entirely, but not others?

[She nods at the ones he's raised, though.] I've got an Audino myself! Her name is Dinah, and she was my first Pokemon. We've kind of hit...the level wall, I suppose, but she helps train my other Pokemon in order to polish her techniques, and I've got to say that the more we work together, the more I admire her type's resilience. What's a Lopunny like?

I'm familiar with every Normal-type that didn't spontaneously pop up in November, and I've been here long enough to remember the good old days when they ruled supreme over the Goldenrod Gym. First bit of advice: get a Meowth, don't get a Glameow.

[She's really been thinking hard about this sort of thing okay, you remember Dinah. She's so strong now. She's amazing, and she's a Normal type. Obviously other Normal types have amazingness to them too.]

I've heard Meowth are almost like a money cheat in this place - do they happen to be stronger than Glameows? I've spotted both in Goldenrod.

You've heard right. If you wait for a Meowth to learn Pay Day before letting it evolve, you'll never need to work again. The Glameow line is good at battling, but the ones I know have... very unpleasant personalities.

They do have a bit of a snooty air to them. My best friend collects cat Pokemon - she just loves cats in general, so we end up having them around. Still, I suppose if I'm trying to build my own special sort of team, it'd be better to pick members who are stronger...or, perhaps, clever in their own ways. What others do you know about?

I just caught me an Ursaring, up in the mountains. Pretty cool, he's a Normal type. Likes to punch things and kick'em. Big old giant bear Pokemon. I like'im!

How far up into the mountains did you happen to find it?

Pretty far? I dunno, took a vacation to Blackthorn, got'im up there outside the resort. He was pretty tough, had to really battle a while before I could ball'im.

Blackthorn, hm...I know I haven't been out that far yet. I suppose it might be worth the time to go out there, if I could find one of these Ursarings.

I had a couple that used to be normal and then turned out to be fairy...but okay, so have you ever met any Furrets?

Because from what I've seen, they're either the friendliest things you've ever seen, or they're vicious monsters who'd tear your throat out and hold a hell of a grudge.

I've seen a few folks with Furrets. They...evolve from the Sentrets you can find back near New Bark, I believe? Hm...

[Should...she risk catching an animal that has a 50/50 chance of wishing her bodily harm?]

Then that's just false adveristing! You can't really call yourself a normal gym type when most of your Pokemon are fairy types too!

I'm sure when she started her gym, her Pokemon were considered the Normal type - and to just shove aside the team she trained and took care of all this time because they don't fit the label anymore seems awfully rude. I can't fault Whitney for that.

I guess not but it still seems false advertising to not tell people that she has fairy types too.

Before I arrived here due to shenanigans, I was only familiar with Normal Type. You know, Clefairy, Chansey, Ratata and all of those Pokemon who are now Dual Types, go figure.

Life was so much easier when they didn't add on. Now I need to factor in counters for Steel and Dark and Fairy and geez.

[Jane perks up.] Oh - you know about the games, too? Isn't it so unusual to see how different it is? I...think I like it a little better, actually, since it just adds more layers to the experience, but there's definitely still a learning curve.

Yeah, it is pretty unusual. If I were to guess at everything, it seems that we're in a sort of expansion-type world. You know, base game, different events.

Ah, well.... I think you could still call it that if it looks normal enough. Just getting another type out of the blue doesn't change too much, does it?

It changes the type matchups quite considerably! For example, instead of knowing you can rely on your...Hitmonchan, let's say, to fight a Clefable, you end up getting your bottom handed back to you with its new Fairy typing! Not to say that Whitney should change her whole gym over...that's not fair to her or her Pokemon. I'd just...like to add some purely Normal Pokemon to my circle of little friends.
