BUT!!! You'll want to get your first Pokemon right away after you read the book they gave you.
The faster you work at training up, the better you'll be when you have to start doing the gyms.

Hit up breeders for eggs if you haven't found any Pokemon you're interested in really dedicating yourself to quite yet. After a lot of them hatch, they have a whole set of move right off the bat that you just need to hone!
