Christmas Thoughts - Video

Christmas time is around the corner. I noticed that this place is more of a Western Christmas all things around, so I need to find myself some kind of present-based Christmas party to go to or host.

Back home, Christmas in Japan is a huge date night for couples, both married and non. I haven't had a date since I was in high school, and even then I dropped out to focus on my work.

God I feel old...

Aw well, at least I have my kids. We'll be baking cookies for everyone, once I figure out this frankenstein of a recipe I found on the shelves. I'm almost terrified to brown butter here but here's hoping I don't burn down the building doing so.

Christmas in Japan is about dating? Wow, I did not know that.

I'm kinda surprised they have a Christmas here at all actually. And not just some...I don't know. Even more pokemon version of a winter holiday event, or something.

[Look she plays video games, she's seen a lot of 'winter' holidays because they can't do Christmas.]

Commercially it's the biggest date night in Japan. And also, for KFC. Kentucky Fried Chicken makes a killing on Christmas Day every single year, and it's one of the best sellers of the year.

Yeah, I've been here for about two years now and the winter celebrations here are a lot more fun and varied when it comes down to it. But it's a more of a western feel than anything else.

My mother would throw a fit if we tried to eat KFC for Christmas. I really wish I'd known that back home.

[She and Michael would have totally tried something, or her and Ren.]

Really? What kind of stuff goes on?

Visit Japan sometime. You'll get an excuse to get KFC!

Delibirds came last Christmas along with Jynx and Snovers to deliver presents, and there was a awesome Solstice festival spirit. And there was Santas everywhere, it was GREAT.

I'd like to. ...but travel isn't really an option for me if I do get sent home. One of the many reasons I'm kinda team, stay here forever.

That sounds like fun. ....wait, is Santa actually real here, or do pokemon passing out presents do that themselves?

Ah, I see. Some people are like that, I find.

I'm not entirely certain? But there's plenty of Santas on the corner like last year. Maybe this year will be different.

Yeah, it seems to vary, which kind of makes sense. Some people have stuff to go back to.

Huh, I'm totally trying to figure that out then. This place is so strange, I honestly wouldn't be that surprised.

As someone who hasn't been on a date for almost twenty years, I can promise you that the first ten dateless years are the worst. Besides, at least this place won't shove romance in your face until February. Got any Water and Ground-types that could put a fire out in a pinch?

I've got an Alolan Golem that knows a few ground moves that might help. Need someone who can deal with a fire?

No, but that might be the difference between burning down the building and not. Won't save the butter if that goes wrong, though.

Might not save the pan but we'll have to see. How hard can it be to brown butter after all?

Can't be any harder than getting a crust just right. Unless you're trying to do it over a firepit in the snow.

Definitely not, I've got an apartment which I work out of. Being a mangaka is pretty well paying when the royalties come barging in.

You think this is weird. On the planet I called home, these sorts of holidays were just another excuse to throw heaps of guns around and reduced rates on mercenaries for hire. I... think I quite prefer this celebration.

That's quite the celebration. It's like a sci-fi action movie where you're from.

It's certainly made this world all the more enjoyable.

Yeah, this world's definitely more sedate even if it has its action packed moments. It's a lot of fun, and less deadly than it could be.

And yet it still finds its way to be dangerous. Perhaps more so than any place I have ever been. It's far easier to be hurt when you do not expect it than it is when you are constantly on your guard.

Yeah, I get you. But if you're not looking for trouble, trouble doesn't come your way if you're not looking for it. I mean, at least not intentionally from my perspective.

Then again, I haven't been a trouble magnet in nearly ten years.

Gotta say though, I'm feeling surprisingly disappointed I can't get a Christmas cake like back home here...

Never thought I'd miss that, of all things.

I'm a little disappointed too, but spend a couple of years here and I got used to it.

I'm more about baking my own feast now and sharing it with others nowadays. It feels more rewarding.

Yeah, gotta make do, I guess.

I'd bake one myself, but I don't really know recipe... So I might try making something approximate for me and my Pokemon.

I can transcribe the recipe I use and send it over. That'll help, right?

All right, just remember that the toppings vary so you can basically top it with anything and it'll come out fine. It's the baking that basically counts, and the filling.
