GHOST TRICK PART ONE: Festival Log!

Log:

The streets are lined with NPC-run stalls for food, games, and the assorted tchotchkes of every summer festival you’ve ever seen in your animes! There’s Goldeen Scoop, heaping cones of Swirlix Candy, Test Your STRENGTH (there are two different machines for people and Pokémon; HM04 not required); basically, if you can think of it, it’s there. There will also be a yukata rental stall if you want to go full hog on the cultural side of things. Ecruteak boasts a small stage where the Kimono Girls give a short performance once every two hours; the festivities in Lavender Town are a little quieter, but they also have Haunter-shaped ice cream treats. When you lick them, they Lick you!

On the last evening (August 15th) of the festival in either location, there will be a large bonfire and traditional bon-odori dance in which everyone is welcome to participate. In Lavender Town only, they also set paper lamps afloat in the water past the cliffs.

The closer you get to midnight on the last night of the festival, the more ghosts pop up.

Kaneki Ken | Ecruteak

[August 13th - Food Stalls]

[It seems like it was a good time to come visit Ecruteak for a while, given the festivities going on currently. It's a nice change of pace as well as a distraction from the new library that has literally comsumed Kaneki's life, if anybody has been wondering where he vanished to for seemingly forever. He's rented a Yukata for himself (and even went to the trouble of trying to tie a little bow around Rikki's neck, one she promptly tore off) and has been wandering around the festival ever since he got here with Maka.

Right now, though, he can be found near one of the food stalls purchasing Taiyaki for himself and his Pokemon. Rikki's on his shoulder as usual and Hide is walking at his side like a toddler, as well as a Yanma and a Flaaffy close by. That would be all, except...

If you're walking past, you might notice the head of something peering quietly out of Kaneki's bag, watching you as you walk by. It's a pink and yellow something that doesn't really resemble any normal Pokemon...but no, it actually is. It's just a very young Dunsparce that must have hatched very recently, a shiny one with vibrant pink skin.

And she's staring at whatever food thing you have in your hand, desperately giving you puppy-snake eyes over it.]

[August 14th - Kimono Girl Performance]

[Kaneki hadn't gotten around to watching any shows yesterday, but he decided to today. It's relaxing to watch and his Pokemon seem to enjoy it as well, even though Kaneki's Smeargle and Flaaffy keep getting up so they can dance along with the music together. It's innocent enough, at least until anyone happening to be sitting nearby has a Smeargle barreling into their legs, followed up by Kaneki quickly moving over to draw him up into his arms.]

Hide...you have to be more careful. I'm sorry about that.

August 13th

[Luckily for Jane, the vendors at this festival aren't hiking up their prices too high - at least, not yet - so she was able to get a bag of cookies at a nearby stall. She's being conservative with them, planning to share them with her Pokemon later, and nibbles on one, still not used to the flavor of green tea, but then she spies...the pink, shiny thing. It's poked it's head out of someone's bag and has its eyes fixated on her, or rather the cookie in her hand. She looks at the cookie, then at the creature, then at the cookie again.]

...Hmmm.

[Let's just...edge a little closer, not to bother the Pokemon's trainer (obviously the boy holding the bag it's in, right?) and just. Break off the uneaten half of the cookie in her hand and give it to the little guy. Obviously this isn't weird at all, right?]

[samsa]

[The Dunsparce has eyes that are only for that cookie, even though it doesn't seem to have its eyes...open? How do Dunsparce work, we just don't know. Either way, the instant Jane reaches out to hand over the cookie, the Pokemon pokes her head out further and dantily grabs it in her mouth.

Crunch crunch crunch.

Alas, she is less stealthy about eating as she is about receiving snacks from strangers...and just as Kaneki has his Taiyaki in hand, he's lifting his arm to look down at his Dunsparce who has a face covered in cookie crumbs.]

Hinami-chan...? What are you eating?

Uh-

[Jane stares, like a Deerling in headlights, hand outstretched - and the other half of the partially eaten cookie is in those hands, too, so in case there was any way to mistake it, Jane was definitely feeding your Pokemon, random stranger.]

[samsa]

[Meanwhile, Hinami is happily munching away. If she was outside of that bag, her tail would probably be wagging.

Kaneki looks over at Jane and puts two and two together, but he doesn't seem mad at all. He just seems a little exasperated, probably towards the little Dunsparce. He reaches down and rubs the top of her head, shooting Jane an apologetic look.]

Sorry about that, I...she must have been begging, huh?

[Kaneki, why are you apologizing.]

Oh...um, no, I'm sorry for...

[For feeding your Pokemon? Yeesh Jane why are YOU apologizing.]

Uh...er, that is to say...she was, a little bit. But, I don't mind! I'm just...ugh, this is so weird, isn't it?

[samsa]

Oh- n-no, it's okay! I don't mind it, really.

[Kaneki shakes his head quickly, lifting a hand to rest against his cheek for a moment as he looks down at Hinami. She looks about as happy as anything, her tail wiggling inside the bag as she looks up at Jane again as if trying to convince her she's starving and needs more treats.]

Though I guess you'll have to tell me where you got those...I'm sure she'll want more, later.

[cyan_maid]

Oh! Uh, it was that stall, over there. [She'll just point to a cookie stall.] They boasted that their products were people and Pokemon-safe, so I'm certain you could pick whatever they might have, if you or your...sparkly pink friend would like to try something different.

[Oh my gosh this thing is weird looking but precious.]

[samsa]

[Dunsparce is a weird Pokemon, one that Kaneki never planned on owning. But Komasan insisted and the egg hatched shiny, so. Now he's got a pink snake baby.]

Alright, we'll head that way next. We've just been checking out everything, pretty much...this is her first big outing like this.

[As Kaneki says that, the Dunsparce wiggles again and makes a sort of chirping sound up at Jane.]

[cyan_maid]

[AAAH IT MADE A CUTE NOISE, it makes Jane smile brightly.]

I see! It happens to be my first outing in a festival like this, too, so we're both new at it, huh?

[samsa]

[She is the cutest, it is her. Kaneki gives Jane a friendly smile and nods.]

Sounds like it.

[Hide manages to barrel right into someone wearing a yukata</>, who bends down to gently nudge him away - at least, before he hears the voice.]

Oh! Hey there.

[Isamu leans over, the Lucario tilting his head to look. Who is that - oh! He nods in greeting.]

[samsa]

Ah- Micchy-san!

[Kaneki looks up with a smile as he stands back up properly with the wiggly Smeargle in his arms, his paintbrush tail wagging excitedly.]

It's good to see you! Are you enjoying the festival?

[grapeeater]

Yes. It's... it's been a while since I've been to an Obon festival like this. Usually I couldn't really mingle in the crowd... if we went at all. So it's nice to actually get a chance to enjoy things.

[Isamu nudges his trainer. It's not like you don't need a chance to lighten up.]

Are you having fun, too?

[samsa]

I am. I think my Pokemon are enjoying it more than me, though.

[He says this with a grin as he looks down at Clarice near his feet, the bell around her neck softly jingling as she peers up at Isamu.]

[grapeeater]

[Isamu slides off the seat and crouches down near her, talking softly.]

'Are you having fun? You should be careful not to run off. There's a lot of people here.'

I had no idea this place did things like this. It's kind of nice... though I guess it'd be weird for people who don't come from Japan...

[samsa]

[The Flaaffy nods eagerly, looking up at the Smeargle still in Kaneki's arms.]

'I've been watching him this whole time. He's the one who keeps running off!'

Yeah. I'm not too surprised to see Ecruteak holding a festival like this, though. Most everything here is closer to Japan than anywhere else I've been to.

[grapeeater]

'Good. I just get worried. So many Pokemon are small enough to get bumped by a human who's not paying attention.'

That's true. I know Kalos is kind of like France, but I don't know too much about the cities of other regions. Maybe we'll get to go to them some day.

[samsa]

Probably...now that everything has been cleared around the regions, anyway.

[Kaneki moves to sit back down with Hide sitting in his lap, his hands folded over the Smeargle's stomach so he won't try to jump down again.]

Do you plan on staying here for a while after the festival?

[grapeeater]

I'm not sure.

[He sits down and smiles at Kaneki, glancing to make sure Isamu's all right.]

It's been a little... strange. I guess I've been a bit aimless... I'm not quite sure what to do.

[samsa]

I understand. It's only been recently that I feel like I've settled, here...but something will probably happen to change that eventually.

[October is on the horizon, after all.]

[This might be a familiar scenario.

First Kaneki will feel an arm being looped into his, then he will see what looks like a stuffed Yamask staring at him.

But it's just that, a toy, and behind it is Maka.]

Hey, having fun?

[Clearly she's keeping up the tradition of "win something for Kaneki at every festival."]

I LOVE THEM how did you know

[samsa]

[Kaneki had just been receiving his food when he feels someone at his side, his expression brightening when he sees who it is.]

Yeah. Looks like you have been too, huh?

[Maka's always been good at these awful carnival-type games though so he's not even surprised to see that stuffed Yamask in her arms.]

[soundmind]

[She laughs a little self-consciously, tugging on a piece of her hair.]

Yep. Figured as long as we're celebrating ghosts, might as well get something else to decorate your room. What about the food, would you recommend it?

[It used to be funny how much Kaneki enjoyed eating. Ha. Ha.]

[samsa]

[That has a whole new edge now, doesn't it Maka?]

I would. Everything I've had is very good.

[As he says that, he breaks apart his Taiyaki and offers Maka a piece.]
