[Naoya's drinking coffee, looking amused. Alice the Gardevoir is hovering near him, looking slightly Concerned.]

Ah, it's that time of year again. I told this story last year, but some of you may not have been here. This is a story about the Norse gods, and mistletoe. Let me define a few things before I begin, for those of you who do not know those terms.

Definitions are under here so this post isn't horribly long. )

Cut for a longish story. )

Hopefully you all learned something.

[The video is about to click off, but Alice touches Naoya's shoulder. She communicates silently with him for a moment, before he hands the Pokegear to her, frowning. He knows better than to try to deny her.]

Still... I think meeting under the mistletoe to kiss is a very cute tradition. I wonder if that's something Pokemon can do, too?

[Her shoulders shake a little in silent laughter, and Naoya in the background facepalms as she turns the video off.]

You know, there was so much going on when I arrived, I never did introduce myself on here. Hi. The name's Felix.

Now, obviously I don't need anyone to tell me the basics, don't worry, I already got all of that. I mean, this is by far the weirdest planet I've ever been to, and that's saying something, but I'm a quick learner. I'm much more interested in hearing about--

[Felix is cut off, suddenly, by a horrible burst of static. Sorry folks, it's not pleasant.]

Oh, for the love of... [Light blue sparks are just visible on the feed, originating from the gear from the looks of it. To say Felix looks annoyed would be an understatement. But he takes a deep breath and keeps going.] As... I was saying. I--

[And another interruption. It's music this time; different from the regular music that always plays, this is very clearly a radio station. At first the music drowns out everything, but the volume is lowered as Felix just decides to smack the side of his gear.]

Okay, screw it. New question! How the fuck do you get a Rotom to stay out of your goddamn gear? Because I'm about five seconds away from just throwing this thing into the damn ocean. [More static.] Oh yeah, you heard me. Don't think I won't do it, you obnoxious little--

[And then the feed just cuts out completely. Well then. That happened.]

[He's... been thinking about this. And he knows his own thoughts on the matter. He's keeping the 'Gear away from Alice on this one, though. He doesn't really want her to read it.]

[It's also kind of awkward.]

Have you ever had a Pokemon that's practically family? More than a pet or friend or working partner. They have their own thoughts and feelings, and the Psychic-type ones are particularly good at expressing their thoughts.

Some of us have been here for years, after all, and some of us have had Pokemon we've grown close to. It's not like I want to marry my Pokemon or something, but it's... strange.

Maybe I'm more at home here than I thought.

A - Morning

[The screen opens up to a calm peaceful scene focused on the window of a hotel room and the.... giant Golurk plush that is seated contemplatively by it. Seriously, this thing is- huge. Enormous. Not as big as the real deal, but larger than most children. And maybe some people in general. It's even wearing a t-shirt depicting a Jigglypuff and a Wigglytuff flexing, with the words WORKIN' MY PUFF INTO TUFF written in bright pink letters.]

[A shiny Absol is napping under one of its arms, with a plush hand resting on its head.]

[Of note: a sketchpad with words in sharpie written on it that has been propped against the Golurk plush.]

I AM BILLY-BOB THE GOLURK.
YASH AND I HAVE COME TO SIGHT-SEE KANTO.
ALSO
HOW WELL WOULD A LONE ABSOL FAIR AGAINST ALL THE GYMS?
WE ARE VERY COMPETITIVE.

[The camera stays focused on the pair for a few moments, just so people can take in the scene and the words written on the sketchpad, before clicking off.]

[Please let Billy-Bob know your answers.]

B - Afternoon

[Later, after she's had a bit of fun, Dee turns on the 'Gear to make her own post to the network. That strangely familiar face pops up again, all smiles as usual, and the background hints she's in some sort of cafe. Has she gotten a pumpkaboo spice latte? Absolutely. They seem all the rage, and she's curious, so sue her.]

[But pumpkaboo spice lattes aren't what she wants to talk about.]

Halloween! Samhain. Dia de los muertos. Zhong Yuan Jie, sometimes. Totensonntag. All Souls Day. Chuseok. I could keep going but then that would just be me showing off.

The point is, this is around the year when a lot of holidays surrounding the dead start to pop up. Probably something about the atmosphere- all that bright green foliage fading away bit by bit, the air getting cold, the night coming sooner... I guess it makes people think about the inevitable.

While Halloween seems like it's just as popular here like in a few other places, do you guys have any plans to celebrate something different? Pay respects to the dead you knew? Although, considering how this place is, that could get a little awkward...

And if you're not in the mood for that- how have you all been doing? I've been prepping for the cold weather the past month. I mean, t-shirts and jeans aren't exactly winter wear, ha ha!

[Ienzo had waited until they were out of the town a fair bit before poking at his 'gear some more, hoping it would calm his Ralts down and he wouldn't have to ask for help.

It didn't, and so here he is. The Ralts in question is clinging almost desperately to neck from where she sits on his shoulder (she's a tiny one).]

I'm hoping someone who has been here longer than a day might have a solution to a problem I seem to be having. This...Ralts, I think it was, seems to be utterly terrified of me, or maybe just the world in general. I have my suspicions as to why she might be afraid of me personally, and there is unfortunately nothing I can do about that. Does anyone who might be listening have any suggestion for calming her anxiety, or if there are none would someone be willing to take--

[The Ralts hugs his neck even tighter, nearly choking Ienzo as she cries out in fear. It takes a second for Ienzo to get her to loosen her grip]

--ah. Never mind that last one for now.

[ACTION FOR ECRUTEAK:]

[The great (???) thing about the ghost currently haunting Dave is that, for the most part, it stays out of sight, meaning that with everyone else distracted by their own phantasms, Dave managed to spend the whole day yesterday blatantly not acknowledging it, only twitching at its constant presence at the edge of his awareness. But after no sleep the entire night--negative sleep, probably, it's possible he will never sleep again, fuck every molecule of his being--he's just grabbed some foodstuffs, marched into the inn room closet, and settled in with his eyes shut, hugging the cereal boxes to his chest.

At least he can pretend Bro's not there, in the dark.]

[It's definitely evident in this video that Jane's begun to settle in to the world of Pokemon. She's got her 'gear propped up so it can film her as she sits cross-legged on a bed (obviously in the Olivine Inn, for anyone who's ever stayed), backpack leaning against the pillow behind her, and she is all smiles.]

Hello again! This is Jane, for those of you who didn't see my, erm...grumpy introduction a few weeks ago. But yes, ah, so! I'm alright, my friend Dirk managed to pick me up on Route 31 and now I'm staying with him and some of our...relations, I guess you could call them, in Olivine City! It's really beautiful...but then again, this whole region is full to bursting with plants and people and Pokemon...

[She pauses, having caught herself gesturing as she spoke so excitedly, and blushes.]

Um, anyway. Pokemon - lots of types. That's what I wanted to talk about. I'm from a world where Pokemon was a video game that children played, but they only had 151 species. It's grown very apparent to me that there are lots more than that around, and I was wondering if anyone on here could give me some...opinions, I guess, on what kinds would be good to catch. I've heard we can talk to the Psychic ones, which would be so interesting to experience! But I also want to make sure I've got a balanced team, I've heard that is a very important thing to do, especially if you want to challenge the gyms, and...[She shrugs.] Well, it doesn't seem like you can travel with practicallity anywhere without some gym badges, and the closest one to me is a...Steel type gym, I think. So, for starters, I know I'll need to train a LOT just to get ready for the gym, but if I had something with a type advantage, I figure that would help heaps. For reference, I have an Audino and -

[She's cut off by the click and creek of an opening door, and soon a Kricketune toddles into view, forlorn as he climbs up on the bed to flop into Jane's lap. His mustache is a total mess and there are bits of green berry smashed all over his face, and Jane lets out a small gasp of surprise.]

Oh, Poirot, what happened? I thought you were playing with Dinah - wait...she didn't, did she?

Tuuuuuune...

[She shakes her head and tsks, reaching into her backpack for a small wooden box and a towel.]

Oh, it figures she'd do that! I'll give her a talking to when she comes in - ah, wait, hold on.

[Jane sets the things down and leans over, smiling sheepishly into the 'gear. As she talks, the Kricketune watches her and pales, hiding his face in the bedspread and groaning in mortification. She's talking into the thing, that means people can see how undignified he is doesn't it???]

Sorry about this! Um, anyway, if you've got suggestions for what kind of Pokemon I should catch, please let me know! I'll be able to respond once I've taken care of this poor fellow.

[The feeds snaps on to show a rather grizzled man with a beard and eyepatch patting a rather friendly dog Pokémon. A Poochyena to be precise. Boss grunted in amusement when the dog started to chew on his metallic arm. A toy? Well, the Pokémon thought the metal was rather interesting compared to his other normal limb.]

Hngh. A dog? Didn't think I'd end up having another one trailing after me.

[Boss picked up the empty Poke ball from his back pack and studied it. How could such a large animal fit in such a small device? It was all rather confusing right now. Also, what was that music playing? It sounded like a tape but no music he'd ever heard on his iDroid before.]

Hey! Watch the arm. [Snake scalded the energetic Pokémon when he bit down on one of Snake's prosthetic fingers. He was only a puppy but still. He needed those fingers.]

Going to call you DD. You're just like him. Good dog. [Snake patted Poochyena's head and made the dog sit. Good. At least he was learning. It wasn't the first time he'd had a dog follow him and try to lick his face. Snake focused back to the video feed and sighed.]

Anyone hear me? Can someone tell me what's going on and why these animals seem to fit inside tiny balls? [Yeah. He's going to go with that first of all.]

[a man in his late thirties comes onto the feed. his bag is open next to him with the contents ruffled through, and there's an open Pokéball on the ground. the lower left sleeve of his trenchcoat is also leaking blood from what looks like puncture marks (a bite wound?) and is slightly singed, but he doesn't appear to be paying it much mind.]

I read the handbook, but there's one thing I'm not getting. These creatures-- Pokémon --are they pets, or are they weapons? The information here contradicts itself. It says here that friendship is an important part of raising the things, but as far as I'm aware, you don't usually make nice with animals you're teaching to cockfight.

And what kind of anarchistic society is this that the person with the strongest Pokemon wins every possible interpersonal conflict? All right, so it's not that different from most third-world countries, or your average political standoff, but seeing that kind of thing on an individual, culturally-encouraged level is a little disturbing. [he lets out a snort of disapproval.] Might makes right, I guess.

[ACCIDENTAL VIDEO]

[The feed comes alive with a beautiful blue sky streaked with clouds...and then the ground. And then the sky. And then the ground. A brief glimpse of the eastern side of a western-bound Rhyhorn enveloped in a cloud of dust. Atop the beast is a very alarmed looking trainer facing backwards with one arm outstretched for the tumbling Poke'Gear and the other struggling to keep his hat on. The sky. The ground. The sky. And then finally, all is dark.]

[ON-PURPOSE VIDEO]

[This video comes much later in the day. The sky has turned from blue to amber and the familiar scenery of Route 29 passes lazily behind Maurice. He had bemoaned the idea of it taking three days just to get to another city, but from the back of a Pokemon? That just might be tolerable! So long as they took things nice and slow at first. Maurice is exhausted, a little scratched up with a fresh bandaid on his chin, but still grinning. It's hard to tell if his cheeks are red from exertion or sunburn.]

[It's probably both to be honest. He's a pretty pasty guy.]

Did...[A wheeze.] Did you guys know that a Rhinosaurus can only run in one direction? I didn't.

[Meatloaf rumbles from off-screen and Maurice laughs, leaning down to pat the Rhyhorn's forehead.]

At least it was the direction we were goin'! Had to call him back into his ball to get him to stop. And then we had to walk all the way back and find my computer thing. And fight a couple of birds that were fighting over it.

[Maurice goes quiet. Thoughtful. He looks away from the camera and watches the trees pass him by.]

I guess...I was too busy worrying about taking care of him that I didn't let him take care of me. That's what we're supposed to be, right? A team?

[A much louder, happy rumble comes from his Pokemon and Maurice flops forward, arms outstretched, so that the camera can at least get one of the beast's eyes in the shot along with his face.]

Watch your butt, Cherrygrove! Team Heavy Metal is comin' for you!

[ACTION FOR ROUTE 29, June 30]

[The following day, it isn't terribly hard to come across the pair as they make their way down the route. They stop occasionally for Maurice to hop down and stretch his legs and also to lay face-up on the path and groan because riding a rhino made of rocks makes you about ten times more sore than riding an animal that's supposed to be ridden. You know, like a horse.]

[It's going to take a little longer than Maurice thought to get there. At least so far he hasn't seen any scary-looking Pokemon! Sleeping curled up next to a walking army tank does wonders for the nerves.]

[It's a jovial, confident voice that comes over the gear. No video, only a voice.]

Hey kids, Handsome Jack here! I know, I know. 'Who the fuck is Handsome Jack, and why haven't I heard of him before?'. Oh, you poor people. You are really living in the dark ages. It is one hell of a good story, trust me. Brave awesome hero, galaxies in peril, lots of guns and explosions, betrayal, hot chicks in tight leather.... All that good stuff. Maybe I'll tell you some time. It's...oh, it's just so good.

[Because while this is just a temporary stop-over, that doesn't mean Jack is going to waste his time here. This backwards shit-hole of a planet's covered in animals he's never seen, full of items and energy sources he's not familiar with, and legends and folklore abounds. He's hardly been here a day and now that the shock of his situation has passed he can already see that this place offers countless opportunities for a brilliant mind like his.]

[It's all part of how it goes. The hero is seemingly beaten. Disgraced, slandered. All the best heroic tales have this bit. The bit before the hero's triumphant return, bigger and even better, to strangle the life out of the murdering bastard scum that stole everything from him.]

[Being broke is a bit of a problem, but it won't be for long. Jack knows money. He knows how to make it his, how to make it work for him. He's already in a prime position to get started. As if he needs any more proof that the universe itself loves him.]

But right now, I've got a burning question for all you...whatever you are. Help me out here.

Who are the bigwigs, and where do I find'em?
