GHOST TRICK PART ONE: Festival Log!

Log:

The streets are lined with NPC-run stalls for food, games, and the assorted tchotchkes of every summer festival you’ve ever seen in your animes! There’s Goldeen Scoop, heaping cones of Swirlix Candy, Test Your STRENGTH (there are two different machines for people and Pokémon; HM04 not required); basically, if you can think of it, it’s there. There will also be a yukata rental stall if you want to go full hog on the cultural side of things. Ecruteak boasts a small stage where the Kimono Girls give a short performance once every two hours; the festivities in Lavender Town are a little quieter, but they also have Haunter-shaped ice cream treats. When you lick them, they Lick you!

On the last evening (August 15th) of the festival in either location, there will be a large bonfire and traditional bon-odori dance in which everyone is welcome to participate. In Lavender Town only, they also set paper lamps afloat in the water past the cliffs.

The closer you get to midnight on the last night of the festival, the more ghosts pop up.

[A double pair of snorting comes from nearby, and the source is a man and his Mime Jr. Both of them look amused.]

Y'know, I don't think that's gonna convince 'em out.

[That is one weird looking Pokémon. Like some clown gone wrong.]

Then what do you suggest? I don't know what they eat, the conditions I need to bring them to me, or if they're even real ghosts.

Well, I mean, some of ‘em probably are- have you read up about Yamasks?- but I’d try ta use a Pokemon with a good nose if I wanted ta find any.

Yamask? [He feels like he's heard that name before.] All I've got is an Eevee and a Goldeen.

Ha…. Then it’s gonna be a bit difficult for ya.

[Ah, to hell with it… It’s probably pretty disrespectful to the spirits of the dead or something, but whatever.]

Help might be better if he really wants a ghost.]

So you got something that can take one down enough to catch?

Sure, I got plenty, but I figured I could just sniff one out for ya since that seemed like it woulda been good enough. But if ya need the help, I don't mind.

I gotta weaken them somehow... wait! My Goldeen has a water type attack! But I might need help if she gets knocked out.

[Because his Eevee will be useless.]

How do you sniff them out?

Have a good enough sniffer.

[He gestures to the Mime Jr, who closes her eyes and concentrates. After a couple of minutes, a Furret is suddenly barreling onto the scene, looking excited.]

But be sure ta thank him properly when he’s done

[That is a gigantic ferret yes that is. Of course this startles his Eevee who proceeds to jump on Dipper and try to hide under his hat. The boy just sighs.]

Right. Let's get this over with.

[Chuckling, Joker glances down to his furry noodle menace.]

Alright, Rogue, use a bit of Foresight, let’s go.

[In the dimness away from all the festival lights, Rogue’s eyes seem to glow for a moment before he immediately heads off with his face practically plastered to the ground. Lazily, Joker follows after.]

[sneezelikeakitten]

[Foresight? The monster ferret can see into the future? That is quote impressive. Dipper is quick to follow them both.]

Why did you use that move?

Hm?

[He glances back down towards Dipper.]

Ever hear of what Foresight does?

Isn't that like predicting something that'll happen in the future?

Ha, a bit, a bit. But with Pokemon, it’s somethin’ different. See, most of the time, Normal types like Rogue there, they can’t do much against Ghost types. Normal moves go right through ‘em. But Foresight takes away that little problem. Now Rogue won’t have a problem sniffin’ any Ghosts lurkin’ about-

[As if on cue, the Furret starts chittering up a storm, darting off.]

That's actually pretty amazing given the type disadvantage-

[Oh! Don't let the Furret get away!

RUN, DIPPER, RUN]

[RUN, DIPPER! AND JOKER will be ambling relaxed enough from somewhere behind you, but don’t worry, it’s fine, it’s fine.]

[In the meantime, Rogue the Furret seems to be hot on the tail of a Shuppet, chittering excitedly the whole way.]

[What the heck is that thing? Running or not, Dipper whips out his Dex to check this thing out.

Shuppet. Ghost and dark type. That's twice as useful! He definitely needs this one!]

Wait up! I just wanna catch you!

[pipers_son]

[The Shuppet seems quite opposed to being caught… but then again, maybe that’s because Rogue will not shut up and keeps trying to nip at the bottom of the little ghostly doll. You have your work cut out for you, Dipper.]

[sneezelikeakitten]

H-Hey! Rogue! Rugged! Rouge! WHATEVER YOUR NAME IS! Stop! You're scaring it!!!

[Pleeeeaaaase all he wants is a ghost...]

[pipers_son]

[The repeated manglings of his name have Rogue the Furret stop, rising to his hind feet and chittering back at Dipper in apparent offense. EXCUSE YOU, SIR, HIS NAME IS VERY EASY TO RECALL!!!]

[He stops and stares at the giant ferret. Uhm...]

Sorry, Rogue, but you're scaring it away!

[The offended chittering eases up a bit, and all of this is just enough time for Joker to come sauntering up. He huffs a laugh at the scene and the Shuppet peering warily around one corner.]

So how’s luck?

Horrible!

[Dipper slowly walks over to the Shuppet.] Hey... he was only supposed to find you, not try and eat you.

[While it doesn’t retreat, the Shuppet still seems a bit leery peering at Dipper. Joker, backseat trainer, chips in with some advice.]
