GHOST TRICK PART ONE: Festival Log!

Log:

The streets are lined with NPC-run stalls for food, games, and the assorted tchotchkes of every summer festival you’ve ever seen in your animes! There’s Goldeen Scoop, heaping cones of Swirlix Candy, Test Your STRENGTH (there are two different machines for people and Pokémon; HM04 not required); basically, if you can think of it, it’s there. There will also be a yukata rental stall if you want to go full hog on the cultural side of things. Ecruteak boasts a small stage where the Kimono Girls give a short performance once every two hours; the festivities in Lavender Town are a little quieter, but they also have Haunter-shaped ice cream treats. When you lick them, they Lick you!

On the last evening (August 15th) of the festival in either location, there will be a large bonfire and traditional bon-odori dance in which everyone is welcome to participate. In Lavender Town only, they also set paper lamps afloat in the water past the cliffs.

The closer you get to midnight on the last night of the festival, the more ghosts pop up.

How exactly does that work?

Well, I mean, you have to take an exam and get licensed, but then you can be a pro-hero! The government pays you based on performance going out and doing things like catching criminals and rescuing people or helping out with disaster relief and the like.

I...see. So, it's sort of like being a civil servant?

[usedgravity]

I guess a little? But you're out in the public eye and a lot of the top heroes are basically celebrities, like All Might! So like, that's kind of why costumes come in, besides how they can have gear to enhance your Quirk and stuff - you want to appeal to the public.

I...see. I think. Is a Quirk like a special power?

[usedgravity]

Yeah, basically - where I come from, everyone has a Quirk, like breathing fire or super-strength... I can make things weightless! I mean, I could.

Huh! That's a good power to have - you could carry a heavy backpack without any trouble! Among other things, of course.

Yeah, I could lift up to two tons! I mean, if the situation really called for it. I get kind of nauseous if I lift too much though - or myself.

That's still impressive! And, well, I assume you don't run into two-ton emergencies too often, right? And even if you did, you wouldn't have to handle them alone.

Well, that's true. Heroes definitely try to work together!

Do you all get to choose your teammates?

[usedgravity]

Sort of? I mean, a lot of heroes form teams or have sidekicks, but when an emergency pops up, you never know who's around - you gotta be able to work with whoever's on the scene!

So it's more of a giant, interconnected system! How interesting...

Yeah, there's lots of different teams and agencies, but they're all paid by the government and in the end, they all have the same goal of helping the citizens!

That's great! I'm glad to hear it - though it does still sound rather bizarre, if it works and people are happy and safe, then I certainly can't fault it, can I?

I guess it probably does sound kinda weird if you come from a place where most people don't have powers... but I think it's pretty cool!

[Jane smiles sheepishly.] Then that's the most important thing, isn't it? After all, it's your home!

Yeah! It was, well... really inspiring, seeing so many people out there, doing their best for peace and justice and helping other people!

[Well, and fame and fortune, but hey, they still did good deeds.]
