GHOST TRICK PART ONE: Festival Log!

Log:

The streets are lined with NPC-run stalls for food, games, and the assorted tchotchkes of every summer festival you’ve ever seen in your animes! There’s Goldeen Scoop, heaping cones of Swirlix Candy, Test Your STRENGTH (there are two different machines for people and Pokémon; HM04 not required); basically, if you can think of it, it’s there. There will also be a yukata rental stall if you want to go full hog on the cultural side of things. Ecruteak boasts a small stage where the Kimono Girls give a short performance once every two hours; the festivities in Lavender Town are a little quieter, but they also have Haunter-shaped ice cream treats. When you lick them, they Lick you!

On the last evening (August 15th) of the festival in either location, there will be a large bonfire and traditional bon-odori dance in which everyone is welcome to participate. In Lavender Town only, they also set paper lamps afloat in the water past the cliffs.

The closer you get to midnight on the last night of the festival, the more ghosts pop up.

[The Shuppet seems quite opposed to being caught… but then again, maybe that’s because Rogue will not shut up and keeps trying to nip at the bottom of the little ghostly doll. You have your work cut out for you, Dipper.]

H-Hey! Rogue! Rugged! Rouge! WHATEVER YOUR NAME IS! Stop! You're scaring it!!!

[Pleeeeaaaase all he wants is a ghost...]

[The repeated manglings of his name have Rogue the Furret stop, rising to his hind feet and chittering back at Dipper in apparent offense. EXCUSE YOU, SIR, HIS NAME IS VERY EASY TO RECALL!!!]

[He stops and stares at the giant ferret. Uhm...]

Sorry, Rogue, but you're scaring it away!

[The offended chittering eases up a bit, and all of this is just enough time for Joker to come sauntering up. He huffs a laugh at the scene and the Shuppet peering warily around one corner.]

So how’s luck?

Horrible!

[Dipper slowly walks over to the Shuppet.] Hey... he was only supposed to find you, not try and eat you.

[While it doesn’t retreat, the Shuppet still seems a bit leery peering at Dipper. Joker, backseat trainer, chips in with some advice.]

Think it’d respond well ta food?

Food?

[Dipper checks his bag and pulls out a half eaten blueberry bagel and offers it to the Shuppet. It's either that or orange tic tacs.] You want this?

[pipers_son]

[Both Joker’s snorted laugh and the Shuppet’s shying away say that’s a no go, Dipper. Sorry, buddy.]

Ya, uh, want me ta watch over it so ya can get somethin’ that ain’t already got a bite out of it, or try somethin’ else?

[sneezelikeakitten]

[Dipper shrugs and puts the bagel back in there, looking for other stuff.]

All I got in here other than that is candy. Does it eat candy?

[pipers_son]

[There’s a “iunno” noise and shrug from Joker, but the Shuppet seems to answer for itself when it drifts a little closer at the mention of candy.]

[sneezelikeakitten]

[So it wants candy? Dipper pulls out sour cherry balls, Twizzlers, gum, and a handful of other stuff, offering it to the Shuppet.]

Mabel and I never leave the house without candy.

[pipers_son]

Looks like it’s workin’ in yer favor, then!

[Because the Shuppet is coming closer, investigating each of the candy with clear interest before taking one of the Twizzlers.]

[sneezelikeakitten]

[So it likes Twizzlers. Dipper rummages in his bag for more and brings out a few more straws of the stuff.]

So do I still battle it or just catch it? My sister Mabel would probably just ask it if it wants to come along with her.

Well, I’ve done all three of those things at one point or another. Seems like a friendly one, so ya could probably get away with askin’.

...Or, y’know, bribin’. With candy. But that might start up a bad habit.

[sneezelikeakitten]

[Decisions... Let's try asking first.]

Uhm. [Dipper clears his throat.] Hey, Shuppet... mind coming with me? I think you'd be great in my team, and you'd probably love Mabel!

[pipers_son]

[Still nibbling at the Twizzlers, the Shuppet pauses and blinks its large eyes at Dipper before tilting its head curiously. What sounds like a questioning sound comes from the little ghost.]

[sneezelikeakitten]

Huh? Mabel's my sister. She loves Pokemon. [Oh!] There're more candy, too.

[pipers_son]

[There’s a quiet sound, but it sounds positive and non-aggressive… And the Shuppet drifts even closer, certainly in reach and gathering up more Twizzlers. This is… probably an agreement? Probably?]

[sneezelikeakitten]

[He hesitates before patting the Shuppet on the head. Okay. Time to take out a Pokeball.]

So, you gotta get into this. I'll take you right back out for more candy, okay?

[pipers_son]

[Quickly, the Shuppet shoves another Twizzler into their mouth, but otherwise stays still. #priorities]

[sneezelikeakitten]

[.... okay. Dipper is just going to boop the Shuppet with the ball to catch it now. Throwing it just seems rude.]

[pipers_son]

[And Shuppet has been captured! Would you like to nickn- wait no. Either way, now that such a tense moment has been taken care of, Joker gives a whistle from where he’s been standing patiently and quietly.]

Looks like it all ended well~.

[He'll nickname it later when he's found out the gender.

[That is certainly an excitable child, and Joker laughs as Rogue the Furret chitters in delight.]

Well, since ya got who ya came for, I think I’ll take off. But let me know if ya ever need help again~. It’s a bit fun ta go on a wild goose chase.
