Be honest, please.

[It's Cecil's voice speaking, but his face isn't anywhere near the camera. Instead, the video shows a pan filled with pudding. Pudding that looks like it contains enough food dye to poison a man, all mixed together into some sort of eye-searing slurry, but pudding still.]

Is this recognizable as rainbow pudding in any way, shape or form? The... separation between the colors is not quite as clear as I'd hoped it would be.

[Apologies to both pudding-haters and fans of tasteful color palettes.]

Looks like pudding to me. [ That's all he can give you, Cecil. Sorry, buddy. ] If you're trying to keep the colors separate then why not use piping bags?

[ Don't ask him why he would know this kind of thing. Although it helps when your kinda-family is mostly made up of gals and one dude. Sooner or later you learn to join them during their DIY projects. ]

It does look a bit like... [ The noise that follows after can't really be described as anything other than a noise one might make when they're trying to keep themselves from telling a lie. ]

Cecil, would you like help? I could pick up a cook book on my way back. [ And memorize it somehow between here and there. ]

[...Tiiiiilting her head...squinting her eyes...she's really doing her best to see the rainbow in there, but it's just not showing through.]

Looks like a pudding...not a rainbow. 'S like...oil puddle pudding?

Well, it still looks like pudding to me! I'm not too sure about the rainbow part but at least the effort was made!

It's pudding, definitely, but it looks like something my friend Miyuki would make.

May I assume those piping bags have no relation to the sort of pipe one smokes?

Your help would be appreciated, especially if you can manage to find a proper recipe. Preparing this from memory is much harder than finding flans and harvesting it.

I... suppose that difference between a rainbow and an oil spill does not matter so much, if the taste remains the same.

Is that so? I was under the impression, that, in this case, the taste would matter the most.

Ideally, rainbow pudding should have seven separate layers, each with its own flavor that delicately blends with the next. Achieving that is harder than it looks.

That's actually a apt description of Miyuki. Almost scarily accurate.

Hmm... and using a fork to swirl the layers isn't going to work I'm guessing?

As someone who only started cooking after arriving here, I can sympathize with the results of such a combination.

[His early efforts were terrifying, at best.]

I think the idea of separate layers might be an impossible dream, at this point. Luckily, the taste itself is still salvageable.

Yeah, she's better at it now, but there was once a time when she would burn rice.

[Whoof, glad Yayoi wasn't around for that.]

Hmm... Well, from what I can tell, you want to refrigerate each layer one at a time.

That sounds horrifyingly familiar.

[If he replaces 'rice' with 'pasta'.]

To solidify them and ensure they remain separate? That would... perhaps the flavors would not melt into each other quite as smoothly, but that particular aspect of the pudding might be beyond human abilities.

[ She nods. ] I will do my best to help you, Cecil.

[ Her reply shouldn't be terribly surprising. It's what she does. ]

Are you feeling a bit nostalgic? [ That is a bit more of a personal question, but she pries whenever she can. ]

'S pretty, though. Always thought th'oil puddles look pretty after rain. Couldn't play in 'em, but, still.

Mmmhmm.

[Yep figured.]

That's right. You might need to use a different kind of pudding like purin maybe. A more solid pudding and flan-type.

Right. They're the bags you would use to decorate cakes. And if you can get your hands on those re-sealable storage bags at the store then those oughta be fine, too. As for keeping the flavors separate? It should work until someone digs into it, sure.

I'll have to try that technique next time, should there be a next time. The results might not last very long, considering the appetites of this household, but seeing a proper pudding after so many years would be worth the price of those bags.

[He thinks about it for a few instants.]

...Nostalgia had nothing to do with it at first; I merely wanted to prepare a delicious yet surprising recipe. But I must admit that I started looking forward to a little taste of home, as I bought the ingredients. It's been ages since I last tasted a proper pudding.

They truly are pretty, are they not? I first saw them when the officers drove us to Olivine during that storm years ago, and it broke my heart when I learned they were toxic.

Oh, but the closest this world has to Flans is the Grimers, and I'd never attempt to harvest anything edible off them.

What I mean by flan is a type of pudding, a edible one that you cook. It's a shaped pudding with caramel sauce on top.

[ Well then, she will do everything in her power to curb his disappointment. If it's pudding he wants, then it's pudding he'll have... somehow. They're bound to figure it out together if they worked at it hard enough. ]

I can't begin to imagine how long it has been for you, Cecil. [ There's no need to worry though. He'll have pudding for tonight, if nothing else. ]
