GHOST TRICK PART ONE: Festival Log!

Log:

The streets are lined with NPC-run stalls for food, games, and the assorted tchotchkes of every summer festival you’ve ever seen in your animes! There’s Goldeen Scoop, heaping cones of Swirlix Candy, Test Your STRENGTH (there are two different machines for people and Pokémon; HM04 not required); basically, if you can think of it, it’s there. There will also be a yukata rental stall if you want to go full hog on the cultural side of things. Ecruteak boasts a small stage where the Kimono Girls give a short performance once every two hours; the festivities in Lavender Town are a little quieter, but they also have Haunter-shaped ice cream treats. When you lick them, they Lick you!

On the last evening (August 15th) of the festival in either location, there will be a large bonfire and traditional bon-odori dance in which everyone is welcome to participate. In Lavender Town only, they also set paper lamps afloat in the water past the cliffs.

The closer you get to midnight on the last night of the festival, the more ghosts pop up.

August 13 - Test Your Strength

[He lives in town, so it's not like Ryner has any excuse not to check out this festival thing, especially when Rose hears about it and excitedly insists on going. And, well, despite it being a pain to get up early for a day of festivities, he can't say he regrets letting Rose drag him along.

Even as he stands there, with a tired expression, as Rose cheerfully stands in line to ding that bell with that hammer. The Joltik in a tiny top hat sitting on his head doesn't look quite as tired, but still looks curious as to why.]

We all know how hard you can Pound, Rose. Do you really need to prove it...?

["Clefairy~" That would be a yes.]

August 14 - Food Stalls

[No festival would be complete without dango. Full stop.

Elfy might be happy with Swirlix Candy (Ryner has a twin today, because the Ditto has been on good behavior and so as long as that continues and Elfy agrees to wear a sign informing strangers that he's the Ditto in the partnership he's allowed to do his thing today), but Rose insists on trying every single kind of dango available. Which, at a festival, is a lot of dango.]

Haa, just don't blame me when you get sick later...

[he says as if he couldn't have just said no to the Clefairy's dango spree, sighing as he sits next to a very happy Rose pigging herself out on dumpling snacks and a very happy Elfy nomming on sugar fluff.]

August 15 - Dancing

[Tonight, Ryner has somehow been convinced to rent one of those fancy yukatas for the duration of the dance. Marian has also gotten one that's Yamask sized, and not to be outdone, Rose has dressed herself in one as well.

So you could either run into a Yamask who's shyly looking for a dance partner, or a Clefairy who's just sort of dancing on her own without a care, or if you want to catch Ryner, he's over by the food table. Dancing is not something he cares about, thanks, he's just chaperoning.]

[ Yeah, Rhys is a little weirded out by the Yamask that's wandering around. A lot of the Pokemon he's seen here so far are ones he's completely unfamiliar with. He might not recognize the little Yamask, but his Elgyem does!

Loader approaches Ryner's Pokemon and chirps, which is maybe an offer to dance in pokemon language? ]

[To be fair, Marian is fairly used to accidentally weirding folks out with her mere presence, at best. Her own existence still weirds her out on occasion, on nights when her dreams let her temporarily forget that she's dead. (She's good at deluding herself.) So even if she notices Rhys being weirded out, it hardly phases her.

She does, however, cheerfully accept the offer from the Elgyem with a chirp of her own. She'd gladly love to dance with you!]

[ Loader chirps his enthusiasm, helping to guide Marian out into the middle of the crowd. He twirls and lets his hands light up, trying to help her along! Loader certainly has no shame. Not that there would be a reason for any, but.

Rhys looks over to his side, like he's about ready to address his little buddy...until he sees Loader twirling around with his new friend. Aww, wasn't it cute?

He'll just look over, and smile. ] Is he dancing with your...uh...

[ What was that pokemon called again> ]

[Marian follows Loader cheerfully, her happiness at having a dance partner covering any shyness she might have. She's not the best dancer, but then, she hasn't exactly had much practice since she died.

Ryner looks up when he's addressed, then looks over.]

Hmm? Ahh, looks like it. That's Marian, she's a Yamask.

[ She died. If Rhys ever gets word of that, he's probably going to feel horrible. And maybe a little awkward.

Loader guides his new friend out more to the public. He has tiny, stubby legs that are probably bad for dancing, but he tries! The two of them are getting some attention, that's for sure. Not that it's bad attention! ]

A...a Yamask? [ Excuse him while he goes searching through his dex. Rhys can never get the hang of naming pokemon off the bat. ] When Marian evolves, is she actually going to turn into a giant coffin?

[ Maybe he's looking up the wrong pokemon, because WOW is that scary. ]

[he says without blinking at the description...]

I mean, she's stuck around long enough that if she wanted to, she probably would've already. I don't exactly force the issue with any of them.

[He doesn't say "Especially her", but he's thinking it. And Ryner's not about to bring up the kettle of fish that is how he knows with absolute certainty that the dex entry about Yamasks being dead people is true, but.

And, well, at least Loader has legs. ^^ But positive attention is good! ANd dancing is fun. And Marian's lack of legs means they won't trip over each other, at least.]

O-Oh, right. If. Sorry.

[ Rhys watches the two pokemon dance for a while, blinking as the two catch the attention of some nearby trainers. Cute stuff. ] So, what's it like when they evolve? I know they do it 'cause the dex says that they do, but I've never actually seen it.

It doesn't, y'know. Hurt them, does it?

Not usually. Aran's a special case the one time he almost did 'cause he's a Paras, and, well, don't look those up if you don't want nightmares about mushrooms... But the rest, it's been pretty much painless. They start glowing for a minute or so, and then they grow into their new form.

[The two of them are pretty cute together, aren't they.]

Some of mine just choose not to, for their own reasons.

[ Rhys can understand that. If someone wanted him to change when he didn't want to, he'd probably tell them off. Or something. Either way, he wouldn't do it.

He also makes a note to not look up 'Paras' in the dex. ]

I wouldn't want Loader to change if he doesn't want to. I mean, it's not me changing, right?

...It would be kind of cool though.

It is pretty cool to watch, yeah. Who knows, maybe he'll decide to on his own one of these days.

I kind of hope so. Loader's cool as he is, but man. The thing he's supposed to evolve into is pretty badass.

S-So, uh. Are you going anywhere? Like am I interrupting anything, or...?

Nah, I'm just here as chaperone. And for the food, but mostly to keep an eye on Marian and Rose.

[atlasrising]

Oh! Oh, I gotcha.

I, I think I gotta try and find my friend. He wandered off around here somewhere, I think.

[ Rhys why are you so awkward ]

Ahh, okay. Well, don't let me get in your way.

[you could offer to help, Ryner...]

O-Okay! I'll just...leave...I guess.

[ he's just gonna turn to go like the awkward heap he is, honestly. ]

[you think Ryner's any less of an awkward heap? he's just good at hiding behind detachment...]
