victory_road | GHOST TRICK PART ONE: Festival Log!

Log:

The streets are lined with NPC-run stalls for food, games, and the assorted tchotchkes of every summer festival you’ve ever seen in your animes! There’s Goldeen Scoop, heaping cones of Swirlix Candy, Test Your STRENGTH (there are two different machines for people and Pokémon; HM04 not required); basically, if you can think of it, it’s there. There will also be a yukata rental stall if you want to go full hog on the cultural side of things. Ecruteak boasts a small stage where the Kimono Girls give a short performance once every two hours; the festivities in Lavender Town are a little quieter, but they also have Haunter-shaped ice cream treats. When you lick them, they Lick you!

On the last evening (August 15th) of the festival in either location, there will be a large bonfire and traditional bon-odori dance in which everyone is welcome to participate. In Lavender Town only, they also set paper lamps afloat in the water past the cliffs.

The closer you get to midnight on the last night of the festival, the more ghosts pop up.

[Jane flinches.] Oh, shoot - I saw one do that to a man earlier. Are you alright?

I'm fine. Been hit a lot harder.

[ONE MORE TIME. ONE LASSSSST TIME.

Dipper wipes his forehead with the back of his hand, steeling himself.]

This time I'll get one.

[Okay... paddle in water.... wait for it..... wait for it.... and BOOM! The Goldeen sails over his head, landing on the ground behind him, flailing and bouncing like a fish out of water. Dipper screeches in excitement, dancing in place for a few moments before something dawns on him: fish can't breathe out of water. FISH CAN'T BREATHE OUT OF WATER!

Hence panicked Pokéball thrown at the poor thing to catch it. When it's safe, he stares at the ball, rather stunned.]

......... I got one.

[Jane watches all that rather open-mouthed and wide-eyed, and it takes her a moment before she can snap herself out of it to at least clap for him.]

Well! That's one way to win, I suppose! Erm, good job?

Yes! I got it! It's mine!

[Dipper does a sort of strange little hopping dance in place. He must be super happy happened. His very own Goldeen! But what to call it? Should he raise it to be defensive or offensive? Who knows!]

[Heh, that's cute. He's a good kid.]

It certainly is!

[He stops his little dance and stares at the ball.]

So I need to stick close to a source of water if I want to battle with it. Desert trips are out of the question then.

[...She gives him an honest-to-goodness shrug.]

You'd think it'd come in handy in a place like the desert, though. Wouldn't there be a lot of Pokemon in a place like that who're weak to water?

Yeah, but you've gotta consider you need water to make water. I don't think these things have unlimited power. Even they gotta run out sometime.

Hmm...that's going to make it a pain to train them, isn't it?

[He drops his shoulders.] Looks like it.

[In contrast, she looks quite chipper.] In that case, it should be an interesting challenge, right? I mean, you've got your Goldeen now, so you might as well give it a try!

Right! I bet one of the gyms is weak to water types!

[Make this thing worth it.]

Definitely look into it! And I believe that once we have the right equipment, we can ride our fishy friends over bodies of water, so that should be fun!

I think I'll wait for this Goldeen to evolve before I do that. Having Surf will be great, but not on the back of a fish smaller than me.

...Oh gosh, yeah. Then it'd be more like you were clinging to a tiny boogie board than using Surf, huh?

And in rough weather or being attacked by another Pokémon means drowning. No thanks.

I suppose a...small pond would be fine for practice, though? For the both of you to get used to Surf.

Hmm... I think we're going back to Cherrygrove after this. I'll have to get the badge before we can even practice.

- Oh, right, you need a badge. I forgot. Ugh, it's the silliest thing in the world, isn't it?

I don't get why we need a badge for it. Can't they naturally surf anyways? How hard is it to hang onto a fish?

Apparently, in this world? Impossible.

Then they've got a serious problem with physics. I bet Newton and other great scientists would have a stroke if they came to this place.

Hopefully they'd survive and get to have some fun here themselves. I bet this place would prove to be a wealth of discoveries for them.

I think I saw someone with a Pokemon that looked like it had bananas growing from its head. They'd think they were having a really bad shared dream.
