GHOST TRICK PART ONE: Festival Log!

Log:

The streets are lined with NPC-run stalls for food, games, and the assorted tchotchkes of every summer festival you’ve ever seen in your animes! There’s Goldeen Scoop, heaping cones of Swirlix Candy, Test Your STRENGTH (there are two different machines for people and Pokémon; HM04 not required); basically, if you can think of it, it’s there. There will also be a yukata rental stall if you want to go full hog on the cultural side of things. Ecruteak boasts a small stage where the Kimono Girls give a short performance once every two hours; the festivities in Lavender Town are a little quieter, but they also have Haunter-shaped ice cream treats. When you lick them, they Lick you!

On the last evening (August 15th) of the festival in either location, there will be a large bonfire and traditional bon-odori dance in which everyone is welcome to participate. In Lavender Town only, they also set paper lamps afloat in the water past the cliffs.

The closer you get to midnight on the last night of the festival, the more ghosts pop up.

[Ochako doesn't have a yukata, but she is dressed for the occasion - and it looks like she's already been enjoying the festival plenty, a comically large bag of prizes over one shoulder. She's on the lookout for the next game stand to crush but spots something more interesting instead]

Ah! [It's six years girl!] Umm... Heather, right? That's so cute!

[What really caught her attention was Eevee peeking out of her sleeve like that]

_{[Heather turns in surprise-- it's so easy to get snuck up on in a crowd-- but offers a big sunny smile when she sees who it is.]}

Oh, hey! Yeah, that's me.

_{[Then she laughs, turning so that Ochako can see the Eevee a little better. The sides of her sleeve start to shake as its bushy tail wags at the sight of a prospective new friend.]}

And this is Cheryl!

Awww, hi, Cheryl! [Ochakoleans down to get a closer look, reaching over to pet as much of the pokemon as sticks out of the sleeve anyway. She turns a dopey grin up at Heather] She's so adorable! An eevee, right? Gosh, makes me wish I had one.

Heh, believe it or not, they have a tendency to kinda fall into peoples' laps.

I bet you'll get one when you're least expecting it!

[Ochako giggles at that licking, especially when that little tongue hits those pads on her fingertips]

Yeah? Maybe I'm not sitting in the right places.

[Clearly this is a two hand job now - with one getting licked, she has to use the other so she can scritch behind those adorable ears]

Do they evolve?

[Yeah, she only recognized this one because Dipper has one...]

Yeah, actually they evolve probably more than any other Pokemon.

_{[She turns a little bit (while still holding her arm up so that Ochako has access to what is now probably the happiest Eevee in the whole town) and gestures at the stage, where the Kimono Sisters are cavorting gracefully with their Pokemon.]}

See all those brightly-colored foxes?

Every one of those is a possible evolution for Eevee. What they turn into depends on all kinds of stuff. The environment, their relationship with their trainer... some just need to be introduced to the right elemental stone.

[She's imagining some seven-stage evolution chain... until she sees the dancers pointed out and it suddenly clicks]

O-oh! Wow, so you mean each one is a different kind of Eevee evolution? They're so pretty!

Haha, yep!

My brother's got the grass one and that ribbony pink one, and one of the friends I usually live with actually managed to inherit an entire set. They weren't nearly as well-trained as the ones up there on stage, either. You can imagine how nuts the house was after that.

That's really amazing though, having so many evolutions... how do they even choose?

Honestly, I dunno.

That's kind of why I haven't gone out of my way to try and make Cheryl evolve.

It... kinda seems like something they should be able to decide for themselves, y'know?

Hmm, yeah, I totally get that. I wouldn't want to force a pokemon to become anything they didn't want to be.

[Luckily, Cheryl wants to be pet, right? Because that's still happening]

Yeah.

I mean, I get the sense that she'd be fine with anything... but I just wouldn't feel right. If I were an Eevee, I wouldn't want my whole future decided by some rando with an expensive rock.

Even if we can't exactly speak, they really do like to communicate with us! It's super cute... oh, whoops, whoa there!

[For now though, Ochako will just have to catch Cheryl's front as she almost falls right out, holding her under her front legs and omigawd her little pawsies are so adorable]
