GHOST TRICK PART ONE: Festival Log!

Log:

The streets are lined with NPC-run stalls for food, games, and the assorted tchotchkes of every summer festival you’ve ever seen in your animes! There’s Goldeen Scoop, heaping cones of Swirlix Candy, Test Your STRENGTH (there are two different machines for people and Pokémon; HM04 not required); basically, if you can think of it, it’s there. There will also be a yukata rental stall if you want to go full hog on the cultural side of things. Ecruteak boasts a small stage where the Kimono Girls give a short performance once every two hours; the festivities in Lavender Town are a little quieter, but they also have Haunter-shaped ice cream treats. When you lick them, they Lick you!

On the last evening (August 15th) of the festival in either location, there will be a large bonfire and traditional bon-odori dance in which everyone is welcome to participate. In Lavender Town only, they also set paper lamps afloat in the water past the cliffs.

The closer you get to midnight on the last night of the festival, the more ghosts pop up.

[Ochako looks back and smiles as Chiru catches up and lands on her head]

Oh yeah? I guess that's kind of sad, but she must be all big and beautiful now though, right? Only one of mine's evolved so far, and skiploom isn't much bigger than hoppip.

Yeah! She's awesome now. She just can't nest in my hair like she used to. She's tried; it didn't go well.

[As it turns out, it is possible to get almost-smothered by cloud wings.]

What's a Hoppip? I don't think I've seen one of those yet.

Oh no! [She's giggling though] That must have been something to see.

Oh, it's like this! [She pulls out her pokedex to show him] They show up on Route 29 just outside New Bark Town, but only in the mornings.

[She knows because she spent way too much time on that route until it got cleared when she first arrived]

Huh, they're pretty silly looking.

[He's not saying it to be mean - it's just a statement of fact.]

Anyways, I didn't get to spend any time on Route 29. My buddy sent his psychic Pokemon to teleport me to Goldenrod almost immediately. I guess I should go back one day!

Heheh, yeah kinda? They're pretty silly acting too - one of their moves, Splash, does absolutely nothing.

[She hasn't even met magikarp yet...]

Oh, wow - guess that's the benefits of having friends already here! It was weeks before I finally got to Goldenrod, and even then someone helped fly me part of the way.

[As hilarious as the idea of Splash is, and as much as John halfway wants to develop a prank around it, something else Ochako said stands out to him.]

You don't have any friends here? That sucks.

I mean! I don't have any friends that came from home, anyway. I've made friends here!

[She's waving her hands frantically, as if trying to fan away the air of gloom suddenly surrounding him]

I mean, we're kind of stuck, right? So like, it's a good thing I'm the only one!

Well, yeah, I guess we're stuck. But there's time shenanigans and stuff going on so it doesn't really matter? I'd rather have everybody I know here to be honest. Playing Pokémons is so much better than the game we were playing before.

I'm glad you made new friends though! Most of the people here are really nice, if kinda weird.

I guess that's kinda true... and I do miss 'em. School's fun and all, but if we could come here without losing any time... it'd be like a vacation together, huh?

[Yeah, okay, she'll admit it - she's kinda bummed she's here alone.]

Yeah, a vacation is the best way to think about it! Just a cool break with Pokémon until you get back to business.

[She seems a little sadder than before, though, so John tries to turn that around too.]

Then again... I guess a lot of times you can take vacations without your friends, too. So it's not that big of a deal whether they're here or not. It just means you have something to look forward to when you go back, right?

Yeah, a vacation is nice...

[Though even if it's a vacation, with no friends or family here... it's a little lonely. She can tell he's trying to cheer her up though, so she forces a pretty bright smile.]

Yeah, that's true - I'm starting to even miss the crazy training we were doing before I got here.

What kind of training was it? Maybe if you start to miss it too much, you can try and focus on Pokémon training or something.

[He shrugs. John, for one, does not miss any of the crazy training he'd done before getting here.]

Haha, well... it was Quirk training, so! Can't really do that here...

[Yeah, that's another thing she's missed... it's been really crazy not being able to do the things she's been used to since she was four years old.]

...Quirk training? You mean you guys had an entire training regiment about how you typed?

[Different kind of quirk, John.]

Huh?

[Yeah that flies over her head]

No, like - the powers everyone has are called Quirks!

Ohhhhh. Oh, yeah, that makes a lot more sense, haha.

[It also makes sense why she would miss it.]

Well, you may not be able to train your quirks anymore, but... maybe you can think of training your Pokemon like they are training their quirks. I bet you know all sorts of tips and tricks from your training that could help them!

Hmmm, that's true.. though, I dunno how many pokemon are good at floating things! [She laughs as Chiru fluffs up and gently floats down from her head into her waiting arms] Well, besides themselves.

Well that's a start, right? Also, I think that there are some psychic types that can float things. Like with their minds.

[John points to his temple, as though otherwise Ochako might not be aware of where a mind is.]

If you catch one of those, maybe you guys could become an unbeatable floating-things team!

Oh, that's true! Man, I never thought about it, but I'm kind of like an esper!

[She just giggles at the gesture]

It would definitely be an advantage over ground-types... is there a ground-type gym?

I... don't think so?

[John's been studying up on the gyms to try and get his first badges soon, but he doesn't remember anything about ground types.]

Not that I remember, anyways, but I also have not fought any gyms. Have you?

[She laughs - it wasn't much of a plan anyway.]

I, uh, tried fighting the one in Violet City, when I first got there? Hahaha... let's just say I was pretty unprepared!
