Prom 2023 - Back to the Falls!

Oh right. It’s Prom time.



From the afternoon on, on Friday the 7th of April, your characters will all be arriving at Tohjo Falls via the transport arranged for by Lance. He did end up borrowing a few of those Corviknights from the JKBA, but there are also several of you who will find themselves flown to the Falls by one of Lance’s Dragonites or Charizards. Please give them a poffin if you are able, they are all very good boys and girls.


Your characters will be set down on a tiled driveway (more like flyway, Ha) in front of an impressive-looking villa. Those who have been here before might note that the villa has gotten a bit of a renovation and an update. Turns out that when Team Rocket kidnaps you and keeps you captive in your own home for several weeks while wrecking the house and digging Arceus knows how many basements beneath the house, you might be entitled to some compensation.

And from the looks of things, Lance and co used that compensation to turn their little vacation home back into something where they can relax in peace.

After you arrive, you’ll be greeted by Lance or one of the other Elite Four members, who will give you a quick run-down. You are free to explore the house and surrounding area at your leisure. Please respect their privacy and do not go into any of the locked rooms. You’ll find your accommodations behind the house, so feel free to head there and unpack. Oh, and, there will be a little announcement later, so if you could be in the dining room for that, that’d be stellar.

WELCOME (BACK) TO THE FALLS

THE SIGHTS The Villa As mentioned by Lance and Co, parts of the villa are off-limits to guests. Not to worry, there is nothing nefarious hiding there this time. It's just that those rooms are the Elite Four's private quarters, and they'd rather not have people go through their underwear drawers! Other areas that are off-limits include the kitchen, but this is just for practical reasons; wouldn't want to get in the way of the cooks preparing lunch and dinner. Still, even with these off-limits areas, there is still plenty to see. Library On the upper floor, there is a decently sized Library for anyone who needs a bit of peace and quiet. The books within are part of the Elite Four's personal book collections. There are a lot of books related to each members' preferred Pokemon type, as well as a very sizeable collection of books on Pokemon Battling, strategies and counter-strategies, in addition to a good number of autobiographies from famous (former) gym leaders and Elite Four members. Their books aren't all business though! There is also plenty of fiction available, as well as non-fiction related to the Elite Four's personal hobbies. The books are not marked, so it's hard to tell which book belongs to which E4 member, so have fun trying to figure out who added the books on glassblowing to the collection, and to who the knitting books belong to. Gallery Also on the top floor is a gallery that contains the many prizes each Elite Four member has won over the years, as well as some interesting artefacts they've found during their lives. Ever wanted to see Lance's first badges? Or perhaps Bruno's weightlifting trophies? And wow, looks like Will participated in some contests back in the day! Okay, those things probably aren't worth hours of visiting, but there is also a collection of photos of various legendary pokemon, as well as some items related to them, such as a feather that is said to have belonged to Ho-oh, a scale that was left behind after Groudon and Kougre fought and could it be true? One of Hoopa's hoops itself? Fascinating! Dining Room Obviously where characters can dine. Unfortunately, the dining room itself is not big enough to fit all characters at once, so they've also set up some tables outside among the tents, and people are asked to check back if there is no space. When not in use to have dinner in, the room is left open and available to anyone who'd like to use it. Ball Room Now that prom night is finally here, your characters may enter in what was previously forbidden. Yes, beyond these doors lay a mysterious land of, uh... tables and a dance floor. Listen, there is only so many ways you can describe a ballroom, okay! There is a central floor where people may dance if they so desire, and around that spot, plenty of tables and chairs have been set up for you to rest your tired dancing feet at. Though there is no big dinner served at prom, there are staff flitting around with refreshments and canapes and, fitting the style of the villa, tapas. There are, of course, also flutes of champagne and wine and other adult drinks. Note the emphasise on adult, there. Don't expect to con these waiters into giving you something if you are underaged. (instead, try and find a trusted, untrustworthy adult friend. It's okay. We won't tell your mom. Pool Outside, of course, is the pool. This hasn't changed that much from previous visits here. It's... well... it's a pool! What more can we say? It's a good place to have some fun and play around, but if you are more into relaxation or perhaps even catching some rays, there's also plenty of space around the pool with plenty of deck chairs available to you. It is still only April, so to make sure nobody catches pneumonia in the pool, the water has been heated. Please do not heat the water further. You know what we are talking about! The Accomodations Those who have visited before may remember that the Villa doesn't exactly have enough bedrooms to house all promgoers. In fact, there have been years where you just kipped on the floor in the garage-like area. Maybe Lance is trying to match the standards set by previous organisers. Maybe there was a little extra money left over after the renovations to plurge, but this year, you won't be expected to sleep on the floor in a sleeping bag! Instead, behind the Villa, beyond the pool area, there is a field of tents. And these aren't your basic little travelling tents. These tents look pretty luxurious. True, you will still be sharing them with a few others, but at least you'll be sleeping in something like a regular bed. There are also some chairs and benches dotted around the area, where you can sit and relax, as well as a few open tents that have tables and benches inside of them where one could eat breakfast or dinner. (And, of course, there are tents available too where you can take care of the, ah, less glamourous needs of the human body. No need to bring your own TP either, it will be provided!) The tents house four people each. If you, for whatever reason, want to cram more people inside, Lance will be a little startled but will allow it. If you try to grab a tent all to yourself, Lance will give you a very disappointed look. The Surroundings If your character isn't the type to hang out for hours by the pool or spend their entire Saturday already getting ready for prom, why not go exploring a bit? The area around Tohjo Falls is normally off-limits to people, after all. This might be your only chance to see it. (unless we come back again here next year) While exploring, your character has the option of trekking into the forests behind the villa or descending into the cave that houses the waterfalls this area has been named for. Wild pokemon can be found in each area, though please be careful! As few people visit this location, the pokemon here are very unused to humans. Please always bring a strong pokemon with you when you go exploring! And who knows, if you keep an eye out, you might run into an unfamiliar pokemon or two... THE ANNOUNCEMENT


Once everybody has arrived and has been given some time to unpack, it's time for the announcement Lance has been teasing. What is this unique opportunity he mentioned? Will this have anything to do with prom itself? Has Lance conned us all into attending a Tupperware party?

In any case, you all gather in the dining room. The Elite Four is gathered at the front of the room, Lance taking the center stage. Will is standing next to him. For a moment Lance just glances out over the crowd, as if checking that everybody is here, before he clears his throat and begins.

"First of all, let me say that I am very happy to see you all here. It's been a few years since we last were able to greet you in our home, and here is to hoping things won't end as badly as last time.

But that is not what this announcement is about. Rather, there is going to be some changes within the Elite Four. Changes we'd like to make you a part of.

A few months ago, Will announced to us that he will be stepping down from his position as Elite Four member to--" Lance seems to pause for a moment, looking at Will, "--pursue opportunities elsewhere!

Of course, we cannot leave his spot unoccupied, so in the last few months, we've been hard at work vetting and narrowing down the choices for who will replace him. And finally, we've been able to narrow it down to just two remaining candidates. It's been a struggle, let me tell you! We've had so many qualified and incredible trainers who wanted to join us, but we believe we've found the best two.

And that is where you come in!

As I said, we have been able to narrow down the field to two final choices. And what I'd like to offer you this weekend, is an opportunity to take an active part in deciding who gets to be our newest member. You all, after all, have proven over the years that you not only care about pokemon, but you've also grown to care about this world, often helping us out when situations were dire. We believe you, as much as anyone, have a right to determine the future of this region.

In just a moment, I'd like to introduce you to our two final applicants. I can already assure you that they are both excellent trainers, and very skilled battlers, as well as individuals who we believe we can rely on in a bad situation. What we'd like if for you to cast the final vote on who takes over Will's position.

Throughout this weekend, they will make themselves available for questions. Please ask them anything you wish to know, and please also discuss the manner among yourself if you wish. Whichever person you choose, know that we already feel we could work and depend on either of them. At the end of this meeting, we'll distribute voting slips to everyone. These cannot be replaced, so please hold onto them, and once you've made your choice, please submit them to the vote box in front of the Ballroom before the start of the dance. Then, during the party on Sunday, we will reveal who will become our newest members.

Now, I've said quite enough, so let me introduce you to our two final applicants--"

i feel like this was very rambly and i apologize lmao.

( as he greets her, mai smiles toward joey and lets herself smoothly settle into the seat at his side. she takes a moment to fix the sleek gown and then fluff her long, blonde curls before taking up her fork to ease into her meal. it's amusing that he ends up half-standing when he tries to be courteous to her and she finds it sweet if not a little embarrassing for the guy. she releases a soft chuckle at his antics but tries to keep it at a minimum since it's a fancy setting. )

I guess I should have asked, you could have been holding it for someone else but I assumed.

( at the soft look, she feels herself colour in a blush just slightly and clears her throat as though urging the blush down and away before it can become something that people are aware of -- joey especially. )

All about me?

( she's genuinely touched and the tone her words take on show that in them. mai's pretty used to being thrown to the wayside so having an event she's attending with a friend be something "all about her," mai's more than a little surprised and it throws her off her typical teasing self. here she was trying to ensure that joey was in his comfort zone only for him to come back and make her feel emotions that she wasn't intending to feel anytime soon.

heat rises to her cheeks anew and her fingers grip the fork a little tightly as a wave of surprised tension makes it way through herself. for a time, she loses her confidence and glances to the side, letting the defensive walls she's worked so hard to maintain for years to come down, even briefly. mai has always clawed her way to the top to be involved in big events such as this one and this time she hasn't had to work herself to the bone to just be given a chance to be here. even with all of that in mind, it's joey telling her that he's got her on the forefront of his mind for the event that she's the most shocked at.

as soon as her walls have dropped, she has them right back up again with the moment passed and trying to act as though she isn't even a little bit lost in her emotions, mai presses the prongs of her fork against the potatoes on her plate. her voice is, at first, a bit unsteady as she speaks: )

That's... really sweet of you, Joey, I'll-- I'll make sure to... let you know if I can think of anything you-- er-- we-- can get up to that neither one of us will be embarrassed about.

( well, anymore than either one of them currently are, that is. )

[Seeing Mai emotional, however hard she's trying to conceal it, surprised Joey. Sure he's seen it before, but most of the times a crack appears in her armor comes from very difficult situations or their respective aftermaths. This is the first time he can think of that everthing has been going right and he's seen those parts of her peak through, and that's something Joey certainly appreciates the gravity of.]

Swanky digs like dis aren't my seen, not dat I'm complainin' about all da nice stuff here a'course, but I know you love stuff like dis and I can't think'a da last time I saw you get da chance to just relax and actually getta enjoy da things you like.

[He gives her shoulder one of those slow-motion playful punches.]

Even if I stuff like dis ain't what I get up to, gettin'ta see you happy makes it well worth da price 'a admission. So don't you worry about ol' Joey dis weekend. You just do what makes ya happy and dat's good enough for me.

( there's a ( large ) part of herself that's cursing at herself for having let the walls break down even briefly. it's hard for mai to not let some emotions to the surface though when told that something is meant to be "all about her." normally, she lets the walls down here and there after something big has happened to be deserving of the rare show -- but this is the first time she's had to rebuild the proverbial shields in the middle of something fun. leave it to joey wheeler to make her feel something. )

Thanks Joey. It... means a lot that you want to do something for me like this. You did just visit a spa with me, though. It doesn't have to be "all" about me, alright? This is something for both of us.

( the punch is met with a smile. she lifts her hand and gives him the lightest "shove" to his arm. )

[Joey waves his hand in a "oh pshaw" kind of way at the mention of the spa.]

I'd just spent half a year sleepin' on campin' pad and walkin' cross-country in da snow, so I can't even pretend I didn't need some retunin'. Besides, it was da best way I could think of to getcha comfortable comin' into dis place. It's a lot easier to deal with gettin' snatched-into some different world when you're eatin' good food and gettin' pampered right?

[Joey grins, knowing that fit the bill well for his tastes at the very least.]

But dis? Dis kinda place screams "you". Der's some real cool things ta do at a place like dis, and I want ya to be able to enjoy that kinda stuff before we're havin' ta fly all ovah da place again. Besides dat, I got some plans for dis weekend so I hope'ta make it real special.

[Practically glowing at this point, but also radiating an aura of nervousness at the same time, Joey just sits there smiling at Mai. After a moment of staring at her though, he realizes what he's doing and snaps his attention back to the table.]

For now just enjoy all da amazin' stuff dey've got here at the Falls and don't worry about a friggin' thing. Ol' Joey's gotcha back!

Well, it was really nice of you to help me out with going somewhere classy, at least. It did help with the jarring situation. That "mom" definitely didn't help things, bit creepy if I'm honest.

( she smiles, a bit flattered that he associates things like this with, well, herself. )

I suppose I can't argue your case when you put it so well together like that. But you're right! I'm definitely going to let myself enjoy everything I could possibly want to look at or take part in over this weekend. It's going to be nice and relaxing, and I'll be soaking up every bit of it. I do love this kind of thing after all.

( she arches a brow and looks his way though. )

Although you've sparked my curiosity now. What plans are you talking about, hm?

( she notes his staring and enjoys it, a smile forming on her lips when he realizes and looks away from herself back to the table. )

[Joey tugs at the formal jacket he's wearing, helping it back into-place after his sitting scooted it, and looks back up at Mai.]

It mighta cost a pretty penny, but I think we both cleaned up real nice. Goes without sayin' you more den me, but I gotta say da Joey Wheeler who looked back at me from da mirror don't look too bad.

[He cups his chin in joking-roguishness.]

If it weren't for da price tag I might be able ta get used'ta dis. Beats da heck outta most da places I've slept in this world doe', but I don't think we'll get ta crash in places dis ritzy too often. As for da wakin', it was definitely weird findin' myself in a bedroom dat wasn't mine but I figured it's just dis place's tutorial level. A lotta games got dat, but at least dis time da person' who's s'posed ta be my mom is pushin' me away instead'a runnin' away. [OOC: Jesus Joey...] I can definitely see why it'd be wack if you don't play many games doe. Regardless, I'm glad dis place brought us togetha.

[Looking back up at her from the table, Joey gives a mischievous grin, tapping the side of his nose conspiratorially.]

( mai's unable to refrain from just chuckling at him with that tidbit about looking into the mirror and enjoying the cleaned up joey in the reflection. she shakes her head lightly and lifts her fork to her mouth, taking a bite of the delicious ( ritzy ) meal lain out before themselves to enjoy. )

Oh, I don't know about that. Price tag aside, I'm not sure I'd even want you to get used to this kind of life. ( wait, does that sound insulting? ) Sorry, I don't mean anything bad by it. I just mean, we're all already used to this Joey that we know and love, so, why change when you're already the best version of yourself we know?

( not that just going to fancy places or buying the nicer clothes would change him, but, there's a certain image of joseph wheeler that people know and care for that would be sad to lose. he's such a down to earth guy that putting on the ritz just isn't something that people envision for him people being mai.

she's not expecting that jab to his mother and raises her brows. without a word, she just moves a hand onto his as though letting him know that she's there for him, even if it was made to seem like a passing comment. )

I'm not as used to "tutorial levels," y'know. I'm not a gamer loser like you.

( her tone is a joking one of course! )

[Joey purses his lips in a very "mhmm" way. He still remembered finding her beta-testing Kaiba Corps. newest virtual adventure in-costume with a whole persona built, so she wasn't going to get off that easily.]

Maybe not da tutorial part, but I seem to remembah a certain "Madame Butterfly" from da Big Five's Gameworld dat tells me you ain't entirely a strangah to da world'a video games. You had a whole littah with people carryin' ya! Can't tell me you weren't enjoyin' yourself!

[He gives her a mischievous smile, but the humor shifts and he takes-on a more serious and thoughtful expression as he shifts-gears to address her earlier thought.]

I get what ya mean Mai. You know I wouldn't put bad motives on ya, and I get whatcha mean. Money 'n power can do stuff ta people for sure, and I'll admit dat I well coulda grown into a whole different person if I'd had da kinda money Kaiba's got growin' up, but havin' some nice thing's aint' gonna change me now.

[He gives her a more-flirty-than-likely-intended wink.]

Da Joey you know 'n love ain't goin' nowhere!

( there's a bit of red that tinges her cheeks and she scoffs. )

Oh, come on. Just because I got stuck in some game doesn't mean that I know a whole lot about them! But that was fun for a while until things took a turn. ( a chuckle. ) Madame Butterfly will have to be a Halloween costume sometime in the future if they have it here. Just for old times sake.

( mai's smile softens and she nods lightly. she catches some mashed potatoes onto her fork and brings it to her lips to take a bite, listening as he assures her that he won't change upon becoming a huge, pokemon success! )

Good, I'm glad to hear it. You being you is the best part of-- well, you. Growing up with money isn't all it's cracked up to be anyway.

( the wink causes both amusement and a bit more of a blush to touch her skin. she shakes her head softly, letting a smirk tug her lips. )

Everyone who knows you will be thrilled to know it.

[Joey snickers at the idea of her putting back together her arena champion getup. That was a wild time for sure. Maybe if there's a Pokémon that looks like Niwatori out there he could get back in the saddle on "Drumsticks" again.]

So long as you don't expect me to get back in dat pig getup again. Ain't gonna be no surprise appearances from Señor Porky, even if we are inna game world again!

[A touch of somberness enters his expression as he continues.]

Dat bein' said, I do think... dat der's things I gotta get bettah at. I spent most'a my life workin' or in school, and dat came with all da stuff you'd expect of bein' a kid. Sure I had ta grow up fast, we both did, but I still got a lotta places I need ta do bettah on now dat I'm out in da world.

[Nodding once, more in affirmation of his own statement than anything else, Joey looks towards Mai with a fire in his eyes.]

Goin' pro... dat's somethin' dat'll let me make da kinda life I want for Serenity but it's not something I can go into half-cocked. To step out on my own, to make a name for myself and get my own legs undah me... dat's something I'm gonna need'ta make a lotta changes if I'm gonna do. I'm gonna have'ta learn what it takes ta stand on my own two feet. Taxes, budgets, buyin' groceries, takin' care of a friggin' house. I gotta get my license and save up enough ta get a car too, and dat's all thinkin' of stuff back in our world.

[Talking about all the things he'd have to take-on really put in perspective how much he still had ahead of him but, tired as that made him to think about, he was happy for the chance he had to take-it-on.]

Bein' in dis place, I got a even more on my plate. Ta make my bread as a pro in dis place means adaptin' to a whole new game and adaptin' to a whole new set of rules. I've kicked da crap outta da fightin' part of things, but dat's da only part I've evah gotten good at. Once da Gyms are beat and I'm standin' on toppa da pyramid... what then? Once da dust settles, dat'll only be da start'a my battle.

( mai can't help but to snerk at that one. she wasn't going to comment but now that he's put it out there, she can't help but to laugh at that costume and the memory of him being within it. )

What, no return of the pig? I guess I'll have to pass on the butterfly then. Oh well! It could have been quite the reunion!

( she's joking, really. please don't don a pig costume, joseph. it just isn't very "him." )

Is that right... I think most people need to work on things like that, Joey. Those are the things that you don't really learn much about in school but I believe in you. Your love for your sister is definitely enough of a driving force for you to get all of that stuff handled. It's really sweet how you prioritize her wellbeing and all but don't forget to take care of yourself. I know a little bit about driving, though. So if you want a few pointers, ( she fluffs her hair and smirks. ) I'm more than happy take you for a ride or two.

seeing this side of joey is new to her but she's not surprised that he's looking toward the future. mai always lived in the here and now, trying to make sure that everyone knew her name or everything was going according to her plans to make a name for herself. sure, that was looking a little bit into the future but it was never something longterm and getting her name into the book of "greatest duelists" wasn't going to give her the fulfillment she was looking for. there is a big, big hole that she keeps trying to fill with petty wins and victory money. she's starting to realize that, maybe, she should be looking toward a future where she can settle down, too. )

You've got a hard path ahead, Joey, but don't let anyone tell you how to walk it. Your vision is already there. You just need to let yourself believe it and build it. The friends you've made along the way and your family will definitely be behind you all the way and always be rooting in your favour. You can do whatever you put your mind to, Wheeler, one way or another.

[Returning his mind to the process of the many adult responsibilities that lay ahead of him Joey takes on a more serious expression again, nodding in thankful agreement to Mai's words of encouragement, and doing his best not to get too deep in terms of subject matter at what's supposed to be a relaxing getaway.]

I'd by lyin' if I said learnin' a whole new set'a responsibilities wasn't intimidatin', and you're right dat it's gonna be a hard path, but I'm not walkin' it alone. You've already had to walk it, and walk it all by yourself at dat, but now we've got each othah to lean on and our friends too. If I was still stuck in dis place as a solo act comin' out da othah side'a da Gym Challenge into all da grown-up stuff would be frankly terrifyin' but, with you here, it honestly just feels like a new adventcha.

[More playing with his food than actually eating it, Joey still does his best to make like he's tending to the entrée in front of him.]

I'm kinda emberrased ta say it but, ever I bumped into ya in New Bark, I've been havin' da time of my life.

( it's mai's turn to give a mischievous smirk and she leans her elbow to the table, resting her chin to her palm. she lets herself rather obviously give him a once over. with her free hand, she waves it somewhat. )

What? You're going to deprive me of seeing your physique in that getup again? Come on Joey, it's such a good costume.

mai might have a mouth on her and she can't deny that she likes to tease joey, but it's really kind of endearing to see him being so mature about everything coming up in his life. he's always been a great older brother to serenity but knowing the things he'll have to face in the future -- it does surprise her a little when he tells her that she's been through it so he won't be alone. )

I guess I have been through some things that could help you along the way. I'll do what I can -- especially since you've agreed to help me along the way with all the gyms and gathering a great team.

( he's really been one heck of a help. she raises her brow at the next statement and finds herself turning a soft pink from it. joey had had a hard time just telling her that she was on his mind after the whole marik situation -- so this was surprising. )

I-- ah, well, I'm just glad I could help...

( excuse her while she pokes at her food to distract her from the blush on her face. )

[Though they'd exchanged more than their fair share of innuendos with plausible-deniability behind them Mai's remark on wanting to him in such getup was a lot more open than what he'd been expecting. It seemed it was his turn to g red now and, so, he turned his attention squarely to his food in short-order as well.]

Uh... eh... You 'n Yuug got da cool Knight Costumes. I looked like some Yokai outta a kid's story. No way I looked good in dat thing...

[He shakes head, half in-denial that he could possibly have looked good in that ridiculus outfit, and half in-denial that Mai would have thought he looked good. Joey's never been the best at accepting or speaking feelings when it comes to anything like that, and he certainly wasn't breaking that mold tonight.

Her reaction to his earlier statements catches him off-guard yet again though, and he realizes just how intimate sounding it could have been. Though adorable to see Mai bashful, the notion occurs to Joey that she may have considered herself a burden to him and so he quickly moves to dispel that.]

A'course you helped Mai! You've seen so much more'a do world den me and you've been kickin' butt all by yaself dat whole time.
