[ The video comes on to show a brightly grinning newcomer! He's already on Route 29, having bolted from New Bark the moment he had his feet under him and his Pokemon given to him. ]

Hey world! I just got here and I got this super cool dog! Look at him! He's on his back legs and run like a champ, it's amazing! Show 'em what ya got Danny! [ The camera focuses on a Riolu, bright-eyed and eager. Danny the Riolu playfully flexed it's not-impressive arms, before turning and using his Quick Attack to show off his speed. Zip-zip! But then Ash quickly told Danny to stop and turned the camera again; this time it lands on a Sentret nearby. ]

Holy shit, who's that Pokemon? I'm gonna try and catch it. Here, hold this- [ Wait. The camera's being handed to the Riolu. Who turns it on himself and winks, before turning it back to Ash, who is trying to sneak up on the Sentret. Before lunging for it, trying to physically grab it. The Sentret rightly squeaks and struggles with him, before getting a good Scratch on his arm and bolting off. Someone skipped the tutorial on how to catch Pokemon... ]

It ain't? [ He's genuinely surprised, kneeling into a sit in front of the gear and applying pressure to the scratch. Thankfully it's not too bad, just a touch of blood. ]

So er, how are you meant to catch 'em? I only just got here and some lady who is not my mum gave me a backpack, this little guy and let me out here.

I haven't done it this way myself, but I've been told that you're supposed to have your new little friend battle other creatures and then throw those red and white balls at them when they're weak enough.

The little balls? They're meant to go in them? [ He pulled one out of his bag and opened it, checking it out and frowning a little. ] They can fit in here...?

Well I mean, the way I was trying it, I wasn't making friendly with them. But it ain't like...ya know. Dogfighting, right? I don't want Danny getting hurt. Or the other Pokemon I'm trying to catch either.

[ Him roughhousing with it to try and hold it down was one thing. Actually fighting it and trying to hurt it was another. ]

I'm not sure how the balls work, but they do fit in them.

[She settles a bit, keying into his reluctance. Alright, he's...definitely a bit more likable than she initially thought.]

It's something that's part of this world. You don't have to participate in it if you don't want to. I've made friends with the ones I've caught, instead of fighting them.

Technically I wasn't fighting him! I was just trying to hold him. Really tight. So he couldn't get away.

Aside from the fact that you need to use a pokeball if you want to catch a pokemon, attempting to grab or fight them yourself will likely only get you hurt. The ones near New Bark Town are fairly weak, but in other places they're much stronger.

Pokemon rarely attempt to actively harm each other, merely fight until one is too exhausted or weak to continue. It's not unlike some sports that involve two opponents sparring with each other, in that sense.

Besides, have you considered that perhaps he might want to fight?

[Ash can probably lear a snort coming from his gear as he picks himself off the ground. Said snort seems to have come from a young woman, with an amused look crossing her face.]

As easy as that would make things on this planet, that is not how you catch those beasts.

No worries. There's tons of them to go around, right? Means I can just try the proper way next time! [ Danny gives an encouraging cheer, jumping up to hi trainer's shoulder to pump his little fist in the air. Heck yeah! ]

Indeed, there are. But you might want to be careful if you pull a stunt like that again; not all of them are as fluffy and harmless as that one was.

[... The scratches Ash got from the flailing sentret don't really say "harmless", but. That's absurdly tame compared to what she's used to.]

Nah, some people called me up and told me that I'm meant to have Danny here fight them. And showed me some of their cool ones too! This guy, Maurice, had this fatass rhino with armour on it. He even said he rides around on him too. I'd love to catch one of those!

You're out of luck, if you want to find something like that on the early routes. Monsters with actual fighting potential don't start showing up until you reach at least Violet City.
