Battle Convention!

Early Saturday morning, the doors of one of the largest --if not the largest-- convention centres in Viridian City open to welcome everybody to this years Battle Convention.

Spread out across several floors, and the battling fields outside, the Battle Convention is the place to be for anyone with an interest in pokemon battling. Whether you are a hardcore battler trying to hone your craft even further, or a newcomer to the battling scene hoping to learn, the Battle Convention has things of interest to everybody. It's promising to be a busy event, with trainers attending from all over Johto and Kanto. Famous battlers and gym leaders alike can be spotted in the crowds, hosting workshops or even entering in the tournaments.

The Tournament Ground

Outside of the convention centre, stands have been erected around at least a dozen Pokemon battle fields. This is where the various Tournaments will be held. Throughout the weekend, three tournaments will be held here. There is the Otherworlder Battle Tournament, a separate tournament for native Elite Four Champions, and a third Li'l Champs tournament for trainers under the age of ten.

Viewing the various battles is absolutely free, and could be a good source of insight into battle strategies employed by some of the best battlers in the region. Or, if you are attending the Li'l Champs tournament -- a most adorable insight into the dedication and friendship between young children and their first Pokemon.

Due to the number of battles, at any given time, various battles will be ongoing. The Li'l Champs tournament will be held on Sunday, while both the Otherworlder battle tournament and the Elite Four Champions battle tournament will have most of their preliminary matches held on Saturday, with the finale few matches on Sunday.

So, if you are done shopping (or maybe just ran out of money) and there aren't any workshops catching your eye, why not come down to the Tournament Grounds and catch a few battles?

First Floor

The first floor of the Convention Centre has been reserved entirely for various workshops and battle demonstrations. In essence, whatever topic related to battling you might be interested in -- whether it is using certain moves or items, battle strategies, or even demonstrations on why you should be adding X type to your roster -- you'll probably find someone here willing to talk about it. Even breeders might find something of interest here, as there are a few people giving workshops on how to breed pokemon for battle-minded customers.

Schedules are available so you won't miss anything you are interested in. Some of these workshops might only be given once, while others are repeated a few times throughout the convention, so make sure to check your schedule!

And among the crowd giving demonstration and workshops, you might even find a few familiar faces -- yes, members of the Aurora League have also been given the chance to speak about any battle topics near to their heart. Why not check out what they have to say?

Second Floor

The second floor of the Convention Centre has been reserved for the important business of commerce. Have some money to burn? Want that sweet serotonin boost of buying a thing? Maybe you deserve a little treat after winning (or losing) your battle. If so, head on up here.

Spread across various rooms, the Battle Convention dealers have everything that could be of interest to a trainer. There is, frankly, far too much to list here individually, so please accept this rough list of what your characters can find here.

  • Held Items -- it is possible to buy held items here, however the vast majority of them are pretty rare, so sellers will only sell you one of each. Buying several different held items is fine, but you won't find anyone willing to sell you five Amulet coins. The only exception is for held items that also double as evolutionary items. Those can be freely bought in any quantity.
  • TMs -- It is also possible (though might require some searching across various dealers) to buy any kind of single-use TM here. The same rules apply as with Held Items -- TMs that are currently available in stores can be bought at any quantity; TMs outside of that are limited to one per person.
  • Eggs -- There is also a small group of professional breeders present where you can order eggs with egg moves. The eggs themselves will be delivered to you in the days after the tournament. There is no limit on the amount of egg moves you can request for your egg, but there is a hefty price tag involved! These are professional breeders, so expect a base price of 6000p per egg, with 1000p per requested egg move.
  • Training Equipment -- it's also possible to buy all manner of training equipment for your pokemon. From weights to training bags to agility aids -- if you can think of something that could help you train your pokemon in a more efficient manner, you can find it here. And the bigger items can be delivered to where you are staying, so you won't have to carry around a giant Wailord Training Bag.
  • Odds and Ends -- In addition to all this very focused battle stuff, you'll also be able to find general pokemon items, such a wide variety of Pokeballs, Evolutionary Items, Vitamins and Potions and such. All of these will be sold for the same price as in stores.

However in addition to all of these items, the Silph Co. Booth is drawing a lot of attention. There is an announcement that they will be unveiling something truly special on Sunday, so all of Saturday is awash in rumours and guesses. There is talk that whatever they will be unveiling will be one of the prices in the tournament, though who knows if that is true. When Sunday finally comes, there is a huge crowd around the booth, watching as Silph Co. unveils

EXP-Share, the newest held item to make your training a little easier.

The EXP-Share, which will go on sale in the department stores after this weekend, is a new type of held item. Once given to a Pokemon, this Pokemon will receive EXP during battles, even while not battling itself. Have a Pokemon that is difficult to train like Magikarp? Did you just hatch a new Pokemon, but you are in an area where the wild Pokemon are too high in level for them to train against? Why not give them an EXP-Share and have them comfortably gain EXP without risking them in battle.

Battle Convention attendants can get an early start on buying an EXP-Share, though they are limited to one per customer. The price is 40,000p.

Third Floor

This is where you can go if you need a little break from all the hustle and bustle downstairs. Various food vendors and sit-down places have been set up here, allowing characters to grab a meal or something to drink, rest a little, or even go strategise for upcoming tournament battles.

As always with these type of events UBIRDS will be available to fly characters to Viridian City and back to where they were staying afterwards.

I'm sure he can give you some tips and the like, if he already hasn't. He's a really good teacher.

[He shudders just thinking about the cold weather.]

Yeah, I had thought about a while ago but my team wasn't strong enough. They're about where Kaiba's were when he first challenged Violet so while I might not be a master of strategy, their power alone should be good enough to beat it.

[Marik looks over at Godric and grins, far more amused with the mental image of the poor Growlithe accidentally creating a huge fire in one of the gyms and everyone running out screaming.]

... I'm sure they have countermeasures for that sort of stuff. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Oh gee, thanks a lot, Marik. I am looking for some help on these things for a long time. I have been making sure that my team is able to take on anything but I will take any help I can get. Hopefully I can find a way to survive this incoming winter: I’ve seen a lot of snow from my time in Scotland.

(Harry is trying not to think too hard on the nightmare that is Godric accidentally starting a fire and being seen as a menace. But he has been teaching him to be more careful with his moves and strength like any other trainer would do.)

Yeah, I’m pretty sure that they can prevent accidents from happening during gym matches. I am praying that Godric can manage to control his power by the time I’m setting out for the first Gym.

I mean, I probably shouldn't be offering for him but... it wouldn't hurt to ask him, right? Worst he says is no.

Ehh... I need to get a winter coat soon. Maybe look into a proper tent... I've never seen or experienced snow in person before.

[He's not looking forward to the temperature change, that fits due.

The Egyptian tilts his head a bit.]

Are his powers that volatile?
phoenixwiz: (We Need to Talk)

[personal profile] phoenixwiz 2022-10-04 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
Ah okay, I understand. I’ll try to ask him when I have the chance to meet him again.

(Even though he is more used to winter, Harry can understand that it must be harder for anyone who never saw snow before to endure the winter ahead.)

I have looking for some good winter clothing and a sturdy tent for a while now since I got here. Being stuck in the snow is not a great time.

Well actually, it is more of how he channels his powers that I am worry the most. He would sometimes overestimate how much force he would use in his moves, he almost got everyone by accident while we were travelling to Azalea Town weeks ago.
thetombkeeper: (012)

[personal profile] thetombkeeper 2022-10-04 01:08 pm (UTC)(link)
He's around. Just look for a giant Goodra about my height with a shell on his back and you'll probably find him.

... And speaking of finding things, let me know if you do ever stumble across any good tents and coats.

[Poor desert boy. Poor Kaiba having to put up with him complaining about the cold.]

Huh... that does sound worrisome... I wonder if they sell any items here that help focus powers like that...
phoenixwiz: (Sneaky Little Fella)

[personal profile] phoenixwiz 2022-10-04 02:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh why thanks for the heads up, I will remember to find that Goodra when looking for Kaiba. It shouldn’t be hard to find a Goodra walking around in here.

Sure thing, if I happen to come across a couple of them with good deals in the shopping area, I will inform you as soon as possible. I heard that many sellers are selling in really good prices at the moment.

Yeah, that is a good question. Maybe they could offer something for him to use so he wouldn’t cause so much trouble for everyone.
thetombkeeper: (013)

[personal profile] thetombkeeper 2022-10-04 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
If Kaiba considers you an ally, King will probably try to hug you. I don't know how grossed out you are by slime so I thought I'd give you fair warning.

[Kingyaku gives the best gooey hugs. As rated by the uncertified tactical slime breeder.]

Thanks. I appreciate it.

[Marik flips open his gear and takes a seat across from Harry, deciding to look up if there is anything that might help.]

... I feel like everything just enhances types and other stats. Why isn't there anything for focusing...? Do they sell talisman in this world?
phoenixwiz: (We Need to Talk)

[personal profile] phoenixwiz 2022-10-04 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
The slime? Oh no, I’m not too bothered by it at all. I can always wash my clothes at any time.

Yeah, that is a good question to ask, Marik. I haven’t seen any talisman for me to get in here. I mean, if there are items that can be used to enhance our teams’s abilities, there’s gotta to be something for focusing purposes too.
thetombkeeper: (012)

[personal profile] thetombkeeper 2022-10-05 01:44 pm (UTC)(link)
That's good. I know not everyone's a fan of it.

[There's no market for those sort of power ups. He could start one. It would be yet another way to make money. Marik looks deep in thought as he monologues with himself about the pros and cons of investing in that sort of thing. He'll have to research it more before he plans anything concrete. You've already got enough projects going on. Stop it.]

Huhh... I wonder if a talisman from outside of this place would work. Like if you wrote down the incantations you knew, would it actually work...?
phoenixwiz: (Default)

[personal profile] phoenixwiz 2022-10-05 04:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I already knew that the magic from my world hasn’t been working since I got to this world, but who knows? It could be a worth a shot to try out it and see if they can work like casting spells from a wand?
thetombkeeper: (051)

[personal profile] thetombkeeper 2022-10-05 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
[That catches his interest.]

You know magic?
phoenixwiz: (Channeling My Inner Hermione)

[personal profile] phoenixwiz 2022-10-06 01:12 pm (UTC)(link)
That’s right. I am, I mean, was a wizard back in my world. So I am very familiar with the use of magic and spells and incantations. For most of the time, the wizards and witches in my world often use wands as a focus tool to cast spells on a daily basis.
thetombkeeper: (094)

[personal profile] thetombkeeper 2022-10-06 03:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm. So then you'd definitely be the one to figure out a way to focus his power.

But if your magic has been nullified, that makes things difficult...

[Marik taps his fingers against the table.]

I wonder what dictates if you keep your abilities in this world. I've never noticed it myself since [the Millennium Rod's touch on him seems to be gone] I didn't have any to begin with, so I never thought to ask.

[That will be something he needs to ask Atem about though. ... Eventually.]
phoenixwiz: (Lost and Confused)

[personal profile] phoenixwiz 2022-10-06 03:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it seems that this world has something that would make magic nullified for anyone with magical abilities. I have tried to use my wand to see if it was working normally when I arrived at Hisui, but it didn’t work in here than it would have been in mine.

(As much as he wishes to get his magic working again, he doubts that it will be easy to get the answer he is looking for. As if this world has some anti magic properties in order to make everyone on equal playing field.

That and the possibility that it would have conflicted with the Pokémon’s powers too.)
thetombkeeper: (067)

[personal profile] thetombkeeper 2022-10-06 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
[That might mean none of the Millennium Items will work. So is Atem still inhabiting Yugi's body or does he have his own now? Would the Spirit of The Ring be nullified or remain the same as before?

Too many questions and not enough information for answers. Marik plays with one of his sideburns as he thinks. It hasn't occurred to him yet the reasoning for the nullification is to keep people from being able to find directly and making pokémon useless.]

Tsk. How bothersome. And unfair, especially if you were born with magic. I'm sure other people are aware of this but I wonder if anyone has talked about it on the network before.

[He shakes his head.]

Eh... I'll look into that later. That's the only thing you're concerned about with Godric?
phoenixwiz: (We Need to Talk)

[personal profile] phoenixwiz 2022-10-07 06:02 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it is possible that others might some idea of why everyone has their supernatural abilities reduced in power for a while. Maybe someone could be planning to post a network post about it someday.

And yes, that is my only main concern with him. Other than that, he is doing very fine. Now I wonder if evolving him with a Fire Stone in a mountainous area could help him out in some form too.
thetombkeeper: (034)

[personal profile] thetombkeeper 2022-10-07 12:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe. Suppose it wouldn't hurt to just ask next time one of us posts.

It might! Usi became much more... mischievous and certain of himself when he evolved from Gastly to Haunter. I'm really looking forward to seeing him evolve into Gengar. I'll miss riding on him though.
phoenixwiz: (When He Smiles)

[personal profile] phoenixwiz 2022-10-07 03:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Good point, Marik. I’ll definitely keep that in mind the next someone posts on the network regarding on evolution or something like that.

Oh wow, Usi managed to evolve into a Haunter. That is quite an increase of mischief he got from evolving, isn’t it? I got to admit, I’m going to miss Godric being a small goofy dog with fur covering his eyes eventually, although he is already wanting to evolve for a good while now.
thetombkeeper: (172)

[personal profile] thetombkeeper 2022-10-10 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
Heh, yeah. He kind of reminds me of the Toon archetype in Duel Monsters now except a bit more intimidating.

You could probably still brush his fur like that once he evolves.

... Oh! Do you have any rideable pokémon? Once Godric evolves, you'll be able to ride on his back! It'll cut down a lot on your travel time.
phoenixwiz: (Confidence Within)

[personal profile] phoenixwiz 2022-10-10 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
Sadly, I don’t have any rideable Pokémon at the moment. I wish I could have at least one... Wow, he could be a handy rideable Pokémon by the time he evolves?!? That would be a brilliant tip. When he does evolve, Godric can help us in lessening the time needed to get to places with very little problems.

I never thought about that so much until now.
thetombkeeper: (002)

[personal profile] thetombkeeper 2022-10-10 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah! Kaiba and I have been traveling on our pokémon since we got back to Johto. What's normally a three day walk is about... a day and a half on Zephyra and Usi. It's great. I won't be able to ride him anymore once he evolves into Gengar but when my Meowth evolves she'll be good to ride instead.

You said you just needed to find a mountain or cave to evolve him in, right?
phoenixwiz: (Channeling My Inner Hermione)

[personal profile] phoenixwiz 2022-10-10 10:43 am (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah, I sure did said it. Since Godric’s form is originally from Hisui, I can’t just evolve him with a Fire Stone in any other place compared to a regular Growlithe. I tried it a few times in other places as an experiment and he didn’t evolve in those places. It might have to do it with Rock being his second type.
thetombkeeper: (077)

[personal profile] thetombkeeper 2022-10-10 04:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm. Yeah. Then Union Cave should work.

[He looks through his gear at the map.]

I wonder where Hisui is in the modern day... Things couldn't have changed that much, you know?
phoenixwiz: (When He Smiles)

[personal profile] phoenixwiz 2022-10-10 05:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, that is a good candidate for the evolution as well, I will keep that in mind.

Hm, good question. It has been a few months since we got stuck in there. I do wonder what could Hisui be called in this time.
thetombkeeper: (091)

[personal profile] thetombkeeper 2022-10-10 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Even if he's not evolved yet when you take on the gyms, he should still be good for battle. You could get him... ah.. what did Kaiba say it was... Eviolite? It helps the defense of unevolved pokémon. I think I might get one for Chen before we leave.

We obviously weren't that far in the past. Maybe 100 years or so but nothing too crazy. The land couldn't have changed that much. So where is it...? It can't be Johto or Kanto... I know continents change shape over time but it doesn't match either territory.

[Marik. You're taking on too many projects. Stop it.]
