Will you come away with me from this place, daughter? I mislike the reminders of a house I found akin to hell. Outside it there are better places. I found a cavern and also a strange boat that seems to belong to Jarlaxle.

[Vierna collects herself, scowling at him; Ethetyrr, uncertain of what's upset her trainer, keeps a wary eye on Zaknafein, and with a crobat's face, that might as well be a scowl too.] If you wished to call me daughter, you ought to have started doing it sooner, Zaknafein.

[He flinches.]

Your mother hardly gave me much access to you, Vierna. And I did not wish for her to turn you into even more of a weapon against me.

I named you daughter when there was nothing worse she could do to me than was already happening. I would have called you so sooner, if things were different.

[noamuth]

How convenient for you. [Her voice drips with sarcasm.] Did it bring you a few minutes of comfort? To wait to claim me until my knowing would never be anything but a burden?

[zaktheknife]

I was glad I got to claim you at all, [he snarls.]

You have no idea what it was like to be your mother's toy, Vierna, none whatsoever.

I know what it was like to be her child! [Her voice is raised, now, too sharp in the usually solemn space of the chapel.] Her daughter, Briza's ward - do you think you were the only one in this house who she tormented at her whim?

At least I know what she meant by it when she called me daughter, though! I have spent more time with your corpse than I have speaking to you, Zaknafein!

[zaktheknife]

Not in the way she tormented me! [he snarls.] You are a woman and a priestess! No one would dare do to you what she did to me! It has been two years from her grasp and I am still getting used to being able to have a choice.

I call you my daughter because you are my daughter, the child of my body, just as Drizzt is! I call you daughter because the witch is gone and now I can claim you! I call you daughter because I am free of your mother and Menzoberranzan and I would call things as they are!

[noamuth]

[She winces, just a bit, to hear him put it so plain - but she is far too angry now to back down, and at his next words she's steeled herself.] I am not a child, Zaknafein, you cannot simply decide that we are suddenly something to each other! [She laughs, bitter and humorless and far too sharp.] You certainly can't claim that I am what Drizzt is to you! It was because of Drizzt that I had nearly convinced myself that you could not be my sire. With Drizzt I saw how you behaved toward someone you valued!

[zaktheknife]

[He recoils from her words as if slapped.]

... I valued you too, [he says in a defeated voice.] I hated what your mother made of you, but it was not only Drizzt I went to the chapel to see.

[noamuth]

You didn't know what she'd made of me. [She's... well, she's not yelling now. But there's a strangled, pained note to her voice.] I was right there and you never spoke to me, except to criticize when I was just trying to keep him alive.

[zaktheknife]

[He looks away from her.] She made you a priestess. One of my few joys was slaughtering them.

... I should have told you I liked your hair, [he says finally.] My mother used to wear it so. My real mother, not Divine Simfray.

[I wasn't much of one, she thinks, but doesn't say, because for all of the raw edges this encounter has revealed, Vierna's not prepared to admit that.

His comment takes her a little off-guard.]

I... would have appreciated that. [A long pause.] Your new hairstyle suits you.
